Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable feature is that Juniper is multiple kernels, so there's isolation, which means you won't get a process that runs away, creating problems across the whole platform."
  • "Has a steep learning curve."

What is our primary use case?

My primary use of this solution is for core switching and routing.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature is that Juniper is multiple kernels, so there's isolation, which means you won't get a process that runs away, creating problems across the whole platform.

What needs improvement?

We had been introduced to MIST as a result or procuring 9 EX4600 switches and the associated MIST licenses.  Unfortunately we found out that MIST does not support legacy switches, namely EX2200 which we have 100 Plus, so this requires us to invest time and resources in order to learn the opensource alternatives for automation, or plan for an upgrade of the EX2200 which requires a significant investment.

Personally learning the open source alternatives is an extremely valuable skill to add to the toolbox, as well as move the District forward with automation.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using this solution for two to three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Juniper's stability is solid - it suffers from some bugs, like any product, but other than that, it's stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

There are no issues with the scalability - we went with this product because it supported ten gigs and the switches are stackable. You scale the platform to meet your needs, and it scales to meet our needs.

How are customer service and support?

Technical support has resolved any problems I've had in a relatively quick amount of time.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I've have experience with Cisco, Brocade, Dell, and Foundry Networks, with inheriting an inventory of 150+ Juniper switches and investing time in learning juniper, a more to another vendor is not an option we are considering.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup isn't very straightforward at first - it took me a day or two to deploy my first Juniper switches. It gets easier with practice, but it's a steep learning curve for anyone who hasn't touched Juniper.

What about the implementation team?

Implementation was in-house.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Juniper's switches have a lifetime warranty, so you don't have to pay for replacements for defective items (though you can't buy spare replacements). It's relatively affordable per switch and pretty similar to other vendors' costs for maintenance.

What other advice do I have?

I started using Juniper two and a half years ago with zero experience, and it was a steep learning curve, but I've become a fan of this product. I would advise others to consider vendors other than Cisco, including Juniper. I'd give this solution a score of nine out of ten.

Has flexible functionalities and good stability
Pros and Cons
  • "It is a scalable solution."
  • "They should integrate VPN functionality with the solution."

What is our primary use case?

We use the solution to access insights for network activities.

What is most valuable?

The solution provides advanced switching features like voice VLAN and QoS. It has flexible functionalities compared to other vendors. Also, it delivers a good performance.

What needs improvement?

They should provide net features similar to Cisco switches. Also, they should integrate VPN functionality with the solution.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been the solution for more than five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is relatively stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is scalable.

How are customer service and support?

The solution's technical support team is responsive.

How was the initial setup?

The solution's initial setup is straightforward. The deployment process for a new switch includes connecting and configuring it to the management port and other VLANs. Also, it depends on the specific requirements, including integrating VLAN for users, IPs, servers, authentication, etc. When the configuration is simple, it takes 30 minutes to complete. But when it involves configuring advanced features like QoS switches, it consumes more time. Also, the duration depends on the team of executives as well. If they have prior experience working with Juniper, it takes less time.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We don't need to pay for the solution's features. We pay for its support service.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We use Cisco at one of the locations. Juniper is stable comparatively. It has the best hardware built quality.

What other advice do I have?

The solution is easy to use. I recommend it to others and rate it as a nine.

Low maintenance, useful configuration roll back, and scales well
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable feature of Juniper Ethernet Switches is the public remote configuration option. If you make a mistake in the configuration you can roll it back to the previous configuration automatically after a set time frame increment, such as five or more minutes. In all the other competitors once you press to enter the new configuration is already written in. You cannot roll it back automatically."
  • "Juniper Ethernet Switches could improve in the EX 2300 model because it does not support IPsec VPN. Only the models at 3400 or higher support it. Additionally, there is a need for support for Mac which is lacking. Some of their competitors, such as Cisco, support Mac."

What is our primary use case?

Juniper Ethernet Switches are used to connect other devices to a network, such as other switches.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature of Juniper Ethernet Switches is the public remote configuration option. If you make a mistake in the configuration you can roll it back to the previous configuration automatically after a set time frame increment, such as five or more minutes. In all the other competitors once you press to enter the new configuration is already written in. You cannot roll it back automatically.

Juniper Ethernet Switches provides free training on its website.

What needs improvement?

Juniper Ethernet Switches could improve in the EX 2300 model because it does not support IPsec VPN. Only the models at 3400 or higher support it. Additionally, there is a need for support for Mac which is lacking. Some of their competitors, such as Cisco, support Mac.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Juniper Ethernet Switches for approximately six years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We have not had many issues with the solution.

I rate the stability of Juniper Ethernet Switches an eight out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We have approximately 500 users using the solution.

I rate the scalability of Juniper Ethernet Switches an eight out of ten.

How are customer service and support?

The support from Juniper Ethernet Switches is good.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup of Juniper Ethernet Switches is straightforward if you have prior knowledge of the solution.

When we deployed 42 Juniper Ethernet Switches it took us five days with two engineers.

I rate the initial setup of Juniper Ethernet Switches a seven out of ten.

What about the implementation team?

We do the implementation of the solution.

What was our ROI?

My clients have seen a return on investment because their network is more stable with fewer issues.

I rate the ROI of Juniper Ethernet Switches an eight out of ten.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing of Juniper Ethernet Switches compared to equivalent switches from Aruba, Cisco, and others, Juniper Ethernet Switches are priced a little higher. They are approximately 20 to 50 percent higher. When we receive a new range of models, the prices can come down. The price can also vary by region.

I rate the price of Juniper Ethernet Switches a six out of ten.

If Juniper Ethernet Switches want to penetrate the market, they'll have to do something about their pricing. Cisco switches are more well-known and they are less expensive.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We chose Juniper Ethernet Switches over D-Link or others because it provides a higher connectivity speed, such as VLANs.

What other advice do I have?

The physical maintenance of the solution is low. After you install the solution and have done the fine-tuning they run well by themself. The only time there is maintenance involved is if there is a critical security vulnerability we then upgrade the switch with the patch which we use one engineer.

My advice to others is many are afraid to tackle the Juniper Ethernet Switches EX switches because of the command line interface. It's can be a lot different from the other manufacturers. However,  once you get to know it, it's a lot faster to configure and set up.

I rate Juniper Ethernet Switches an eight out of ten.

Am not a big fan when it comes to DC design with the Juniper QFX model or campus switches with their EX series as these are not rich in features as opposed to other vendors out there. I like the Juniper MX model those are solid but EX/QFX has so many bugs and hardware issues I have encountered and it only recently that their QFX 5k and 10k now support symmetrical IRB  which is so far behind Arista in terms of working out all the kinks..etc.

Flexible, good performance, and easy to scale
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable feature of this solution is the Junos operating system."
  • "Some areas of technical support could be better."

What is our primary use case?

We are service providers and we are vendor agnostic. We try to find a solution that best fits the customer's needs and this is one of the products that we implement for them.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature of this solution is the Junos operating system. It's an open-source operating system that lets you use the programming languages with it, to tailor it. You can develop automation scripts with JSON or other different programming languages.

Most of the switches are SDN ready, they are 5G ready, and they are going to incorporate wireless into their switches.

It's a flexible platform.

In terms of speed, being the total processing speed and total bandwidth per box, they usually outpace most competitors.

Juniper Ethernet Switches meet the needs of just about every customer.

What needs improvement?

There are no weaknesses that I know of with Juniper.

When it comes to Juniper and other vendors such as Cisco, it comes down to pricing. Customers want value for the least amount of money.

Some areas of technical support could be better.

For how long have I used the solution?

With this current company I have been using Juniper Ethernet Switches for two years but for me, I have worked with them off and on for 20 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

This solution is stable, it's rock solid.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Juniper Ethernet Switches are scalable. If you want to scale, you can go from a small enterprise switch up to service provider-type switches, and the configurations are going to be the same.

How are customer service and technical support?

Technical support is good. None of them are great, but I think they are pretty good. It depends on who you get, from level 1 and up.

From sales technical support, they are excellent. From technical support out in the field, they might be average. Experiences may vary.

Some can be technically smart, but they haven't had the experience of actually troubleshooting and going through scenarios.

How was the initial setup?

I am mainly in sales support. If I have to go in and do some configuration, it's pretty straightforward.

It's not complex, but it is generally other SEs who configure the switches and routers.

What other advice do I have?

You can have Junos as your operating system but if you wanted to write a script to automatically update all of the versions of your software, you can do that automatically.

If you wanted to gather information, you can write a script using JSON, or Python. This is already available on the Junos operating system.

Cisco is the most popular, but if you have seasoned or experienced people like DevOps that write code and they are engineers, then Juniper would be the better choice because they have the flexibility to do that. Cisco is starting to catch up now, where you can automate Cisco's switches using the same methods. To this point, Junos has been way ahead of Cisco in that aspect.

Because of our relationship, customers can better pricing with us. Cisco tends to be a little higher.

Before getting started you have to know your network, know the current state of your network, and know what are the pain points of your network are. Do you see bottlenecks in your network? Is your equipment responsive? Is your data backing up, because you don't have enough bandwidth? There are many factors to consider and it depends on the network and where the switches are going.

I would rate this solution a nine out of ten.

It's easy for us to go back to previous working configurations to fix problems
Pros and Cons
  • "It has features that allow us to go back to previous configurations."
  • "The initial setup of switches is not that simple."

What is our primary use case?

I'm a manager and we're a user and customer of Juniper. The primary use case is for our network connectivity, for our wireless access. We use it as a POP port and through the radio-network connectivity, it's used for all purposes, like wireless data and e-mails, whatever it is. We use it for video conferencing, basic network switching, really for all purposes. We have about 100 staff using the solution and at any one time, there are around 700 to 800 network divisors connected to the network.

What is most valuable?

We like Juniper switches because it has some features that allow us to go back to previous configurations. For example, if we change the configuration and there are problems, it's very easy for us to go back to previous working configurations. The company's technical support is also a valuable aspect.

What needs improvement?

We don't have any issues with the product and as long as they continue giving good service it's fine for us. The price is competitive, and we use our online interface only and don't go through a GUI.

We don't have any pain points.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the solution for six years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It's a very stable product.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It's scalable.

How are customer service and technical support?

I'm very satisfied with the technical support.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We previously used Norton but switched a while ago.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup of switches is not that simple, but my team is made up of technical people so we understood it very fast.

What about the implementation team?

We implemented it with an in-house team. We have a very big network, there were roughly around 80, 85 switches and firewall and core switches. In total, implementation took somewhere between six to eight weeks.

What other advice do I have?

My advice is regarding switches. If someone is deploying switches in a critical environment, they should go for Juniper switches.

I would rate this product a nine out of 10.

Useful for large technical projects but improvement is needed in the fabric
Pros and Cons
  • "The solution is scalable. It supports my five-year expansion plan. I could expand without a problem."
  • "The tool should improve its fabric."

What needs improvement?

The tool should improve its fabric.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with the product for four years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The tool's stability and performance are better than those of Cisco.

The solution is scalable. It supports my five-year expansion plan. I could expand without a problem.

How are customer service and support?

I communicated with the product's support team directly.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

The main difference between Cisco and Juniper EX Series Ethernet Switches is their configuration commands. Juniper EX Series Ethernet Switches's commands are more realistic and offer a rollback option for committed commands. I prefer Juniper EX Series Ethernet Switches.

How was the initial setup?

The solution's deployment is easy.

What was our ROI?

The product is worth its money.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The solution's pricing is cheaper than that of Cisco.

What other advice do I have?

I built the full project for one of our biggest logistics companies in Cairo. I think there were about 28 switches for the warehouses. I recommend the product for large technical projects. I rate it seven out of ten.

What is most valuable?

The Juniper EX Series's most valuable feature is its robustness. Additionally, it is easy to use and great GUI.

What needs improvement?

Juniper EX Series could improve the process and ease of updating the software. It is a difficult process.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Juniper EX Series for approximately five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is highly robust and stable. It has been in operation for years.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We have approximately 500 users using the solution.

Juniper EX Series is scalable.

How are customer service and support?

I have contacted the support from Juniper EX Series once. The response time took longer than I expected. Their public community support is limited, it is not similar to the community support Cisco has.

I rate the support from the Juniper EX Series a seven out of ten.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Neutral

How was the initial setup?

The Juniper EX Series's initial setup is easy and takes a few hours to complete.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The price of the Juniper EX Series is reasonable. Cisco is a lot more expensive.

What other advice do I have?

If you are not implementing ACI or a similarly complex deployment, it may not be necessary to use this solution for LAN access. Similarly, if you require frequent upgrades, it may be more appropriate to consider alternatives such as Juniper solutions

This is an excellent solution to consider due to its stability, scalability, and user-friendly interfaces, with even more features than a Cisco solution. It is highly reliable and does not require significant troubleshooting efforts.

I rate the Juniper EX Series a seven out of ten.
