It can tell us where performance is lagging on the hardware layer, but the reporting on the application layer is lacking
The automation area could be improved, and the generic reports are poor. We want more details in the analysis report from the application layer. The reports from the infrastructure layer are satisfactory, but Turbonomic won't provide much information if we dig down further than the application layer. I would like them to add some apps for physical device load resourcing and physical-to-virtual calculation. It gives excellent recommendations for the virtual layer but doesn't have the capabilities for physical-to-virtual analysis. Automated deployment is something else they could add. Some built-in automation features are helpful, but we aren't effectively using a few. We want a few more automated features, like autoscaling and automatic performance optimization testing would be useful.

Based on highly scalable and available infrastructure, it helps set limits and control costs
Cost Management is used to control your bills by setting limits. Sometimes, there are some offers from Microsoft for better pricing when we utilize the solution on log files, such as if we are making some reservation to reserve resources for a long time Cost management is the console's most…

Great integrations, power flow, and good support
They need a little more self-service. Some of the places where there's still a dependency on defense logic. If those could be eliminated, that would be ideal. They've done a fantastic job eliminating a lot of those dependencies and there's a lot of self-service. However, some of the areas where we could have it connect to, for example, Splunk or ServiceNow, in a self-care version versus having to go back to their engineers, that's an area where they could do a little more. There are still a lot of engineers who get involved versus if it's a little more API-driven and self-served dashboard connections. Doing it the other way would just make life easier for users.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Before implementing Turbonomic, we had difficulty reaching a consensus about VM placement and sizing. Everybody's opinion was wrong, including mine. The application developers, implementers, and infrastructure team could never decide the appropriate size of a virtual machine. I always made the machines small, and they always made them too big. We were both probably wrong."
"The recommendation of the family types is a huge help because it has saved us a lot of money. We use it primarily for that. Another thing that Turbonomic provides us with is a single platform that manages the full application stack and that's something I really like."
"The proactive monitoring of all our open enrollment applications has improved our organization. We have used it to size applications that we are moving to the cloud. Therefore, when we move them out there, we have them appropriately sized. We use it for reporting to current application owners, showing them where they are wasting money. There are easy things to find for an application, e.g., they decommissioned the server, but they never took care of the storage. Without a tool like this, that storage would just sit there forever, with us getting billed for it."
"We've saved hundreds of hours. Most of the time those hours would have to be after hours as well, which are more valuable to me as that's my personal time."
"It helps us get a consolidated view of all customer spending into a single dashboard, allowing us to identify opportunities to improve their current spending."
"The most valuable features are the cluster utilization reports and the resource capacity planning. We can simulate how much capacity we can add to the current resources. The individual DM reports and VM-facing recommendations report are also helpful."
"Turbonomic can show us if we're not using some of our storage volumes efficiently in AWS. For example, if we've over-provisioned one of our virtual machines to have dedicated IOPs that it doesn't need, Turbonomic will detect that and tell us."
"The automated memory balancing, where it looks at whether it's being used in the most efficient way and adds or takes away memory, is the best part. If it didn't do that, it would be something that I would have to do. We have too many machines for one person to do that. The automation helps me in that it is done in a really efficient way and a balanced way because of the policies. It really helps."
"The most valuable aspect of the solution is the fact that it's extremely customizable. It makes it very flexible in terms of usage."
"The advisor recommendations feature is the most valuable feature. It helps set your environment in a clean state."
"The initial setup is straightforward."
"It is a fully scalable product with the potential to enhance our application and increase our servers. All cloud-based solutions are fully scalable."
"The product provides visibility into what we are consuming."
"We find the analytics available via this solution to be very useful, as it allows us to easily see detailed cost information for each of our various subscription elements."
"The initial setup process is easy."
"What I like the most about Azure Cost Management is that it's similar to a native service, and it has very well-defined product features, particularly if a customer is moving to Azure, then it gives proper insight in terms of compatibility and what benefits a customer can get from the solution."
"Science Logic provides distributed and all-in-one concept in monitoring, you can easily customize the features in this product."
"ScienceLogic allows us to create and customize a user-friendly dashboard."
"Power packs."
"The flexibility to support most technologies. The way ScienceLogic gathers data from multiple sources is vital to our customers. As we work with new customers (often with different technology requirements), ScienceLogic is flexible enough to support our clients’ varying network needs."
"Its ITSM and EMS combination is really amazing. There is no need to purchase two products, one for ITSM and a second for EMS/NMS."
"One of the valuable features is rapid dashboards."
"The tool is quite easy to deploy, and it offers very good support."
"The power flow is great."

Cons

"There is an opportunity for improvement with some of Turbonomic's permissions internally for role-based access control. We would like the ability to come up with some customized permissions or scope permissions a bit differently than the product provides."
"The old interface was not the clearest UI in some areas, and could be quite intimidating when first using the tool."
"Turbonomic can modernize the look and feel, making it more user-friendly to access and obtain information."
"The automation area could be improved, and the generic reports are poor. We want more details in the analysis report from the application layer. The reports from the infrastructure layer are satisfactory, but Turbonomic won't provide much information if we dig down further than the application layer."
"The reporting needs to be improved. It's important for us to know and be able to look back on what happened and why certain decisions were made, and we want to use a custom report for this."
"We're still evaluating the solution, so I don't know enough about what I don't know. They've done a lot over the years. I used Turbonomics six or seven years ago before IBM bought them. They've matured a lot since then."
"Remove the need for special in-house knowledge and development."
"We don't use Turbonomic for FinOps and part of the reason is its cost reporting. The reporting could be much more robust and, if that were the case, I could pitch it for FinOps."
"There are significant issues with Power BI integration at the moment, particularly with built-in applications for course management. Multiple features don't allow for efficient report generation. This is one primary concern. The second issue relates to reporting, even when using Power BI templates for course management. There are problems with data import that require manual entry. So, these are the two main challenges I'm currently facing. Another matter to consider is the removal of the markup option for partners. I'm not sure if it will be added back, but it used to allow marking up Azure usage for enterprise customers. I'm uncertain if there's an alternative way to achieve the same function. Partners need to mark up services when selling to customers, and it's currently unavailable for some products or services."
"The product's foecasting needs improvement."
"Be wary of unnecessary costs."
"I would like to see some features included for costing and more information about the components of deployment. Sometimes, it's very difficult to match the component with the solution because the descriptions are not very clear."
"Azure Cost Management should be made cheaper."
"There are certainly areas for improvement in terms of labeling the inventory. That's because right now, we use a number of services. But it's difficult when you look at the billing limiters and how they are named. We can't correlate those names to the actual services there. So, I can't click on an item and see if I'm still using this service or not. So it just rolls up and gives me values and figures, but I can't really correlate them to actual services on the Azure platform."
"If it worked better with other cloud providers it would be better."
"It would be nice if they could introduce connections to other clouds. It would be good to connect to AWS and Oracle cloud."
"Addressing duplicate IPs: There is the ability to edit the DB and fix this, but adding some logic to understand them would be a plus."
"It was challenging onboarding users."
"We want to understand: how does the back end work? What if some problem occurs? What we can do? They need to provide more information."
"They should improve their support process and add chat."
"One important area we feel could be improved is the UI. It takes a lot of clicks to do very simple tasks."
"The product's reporting functionalities have certain shortcomings, making it an area where improvements are required."
"The product is not user-friendly."
"They should add CLI command modes and scripts for high performance."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"I know there have been some issues with the billing, when the numbers were first proposed, as to how much we would save. There was a huge miscommunication on our part. Turbonomic was led to believe that we could optimize our AWS footprint, because we didn't know we couldn't. So, we were promised savings of $750,000. Then, when we came to implement Turbonomic, the developers in AWS said, "Absolutely not. You're not putting that in our environment. We can't scale down anything because they coded it." Our AWS environment is a legacy environment. It has all these old applications, where all the developers who have made it are no longer with the company. Those applications generate a ton of money for us. So, if one breaks, we are really in trouble and they didn't want to have to deal with an environment that was changing and couldn't be supported. That number went from $750,000 to about $450,000. However, that wasn't Turbonomic's fault."
"If you're a super-small business, it may be a little bit pricey for you... But in large, enterprise companies where money is, maybe, less of an issue, Turbonomic is not that expensive. I can't imagine why any big company would not buy it, for what it does."
"It was an annual buy-in. You basically purchase it based on your host type stuff. The buy-in was about 20K, and the annual maintenance is about $3,000 a year."
"It's worth the time and money investment if you can afford it."
"Licensing is per socket, so load up on the cores rather than a lot of lower core CPUs."
"Everybody tells me the pricing is high. But the ROIs are great."
"What I can advise is to trial the product, taking advantage of the Turbonomic pre-sales implemention support and kickstart training."
"It is an endpoint type license, which is fine. It is not overly expensive."
"You are charged based on how much you use the solution."
"The tool's pricing is yearly."
"Customers do not need to pay for the product's license, and the product is free of cost."
"The subscription fees are primarily tailored to larger enterprises, potentially leaving smaller and medium-sized customers with limited options."
"The product is not cheap, but it is not expensive either."
"Pricing isn't applicable as it's included with the subscription. It depends on the services used. If you acquire any services on Azure, you pay for the subscription, and the billing or cost management is included for free."
"It's free out of the box."
"I rate the tool's pricing a seven out of ten."
"Pricing between the two is quiet large therefore you can save some money if you don't require to collect all info on each device."
"My company has an enterprise-level contract with ScienceLogic, so it is available to my organization at a good price."
"Decide what you want to monitor and only monitor those items. Absorb other elements as you grow."
"It comes with the OS built in, so no need to purchase an OS license or DB license."
"The pricing model for ScienceLogic could improve."
"The solution is license-based. It's between $8 and $15, depending on what you need from the product."
"I'm not the best person to discuss pricing, but what I do know is that it's a use-and-go structure. You use this much storage and pay this much for it. That's how it is. Every time, we continue to add a large amount of data to the environment."
"The license of ScienceLogic is based on how many endpoints are used. The number of monitoring points you want to have."
