Easy to use, offers good scalability and responsive support
The deployment depends on the environment. Deploying on VMs is relatively simple. But for most of our customers, we implement physical clusters with at least three configured hosts using the existing model. So, it depends on the setup. Implementing DataProtect itself wasn't particularly challenging. One key requirement for successful DataProtect deployment is proper network configuration. If the network setup isn't right, you won't achieve optimal performance. We have developed a service for some of our customers where they implement an appliance or physical cluster of Cohesity at the customer site. Then, we use cloud clustering to replicate, and even in production, a second copy of the protected data. And in some cases, we have developed some disaster recovery procedures using Cohesity.

The solution can be used to back up servers and Hyper-V cluster nodes, but its support is super expensive
I wouldn't rate Unitrends a ten out of ten because we had some hard drive failures in the appliance. Typically, when you have OneDrive, you can get it replaced. For some particular reason, the situation caused the entire system to crash. We had to reinstall the CentOS operating system on it, and we lost all our backups. They said there was no way to retain it, and it was pretty devastating and concerning that a drive failure would cause the loss of all the data on the appliance. It was extremely disappointing, and we had to start from scratch after three years worth of backup data. I rate Unitrends a nine out of ten for stability.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The enterprise search and instant restore are pretty valuable. Also, the Helios stuff is pretty good and the SAS engine for ransom malware detection."
"It works well with backup virtual machines and SQL services we have been using."
"I have found that the speed of restores, especially files and folders, are extremely fast. This bodes well for us, and our end users are always amazed at how fast you can get them their files."
"I would rate the stability a ten out of ten."
"The solution is stable, with regular updates and patching."
"Instead of four different solutions for protecting VMs, physical servers, SQL, and NAS, we now have one solution with Cohesity that is lightning fast and has amazing features."
"The most valuable features are the rapid VM restores and the ability to quickly find files and download them directly to my desktop so that I can put them where I need them to be."
"We are looking forward to the next release, so we can take advantage of the AHV backup for our Nutanix environment."
"The ability to diversify jobs within the same server helps break down a large chunk of data into more manageable and concentrated chunks."
"When we talk about a backup point of view, from a backup perspective, it's a good one."
"Replication to Forever Cloud."
"I really like the reporting options you get for various email reports."
"They have great support."
"Stability-wise, I rate this solution a nine out of ten."
"The ability to backup both physical and virtual machines, along with having an appliance store the backups locally instead of on a file server, NAS, or SAN."
"Iinstant recovery (allows a spin-up of your image as a VM on the appliance)."

Cons

"The support from Cohesity is good, but it is not as exceptional as Nutanix."
"We are waiting on the AIX agent to be released."
"The product is still young and is continually improving. There have been a couple of buggy releases in the software that have caused us minor issues, so possibly some better QA before releasing would prove to be useful. We have also been inquiring about new app and functionality via the Marketplace that was teased months back but has yet to come to fruition."
"Cohesity cluster upgrades have not been as easy as a single button click. They are a manual process that requires upgrading each node into a cluster individually."
"Many of the reports are basic, at most, and at times we had to open a support ticket to help find or develop a report for our needs."
"Their UI requires a manual refresh. It doesn't seem like it updates itself sometimes when you're moving from screens or waiting for a change to take effect, so you have to manually refresh."
"We would like it to have more capabilities for different kinds of PaaS or SaaS services in the Azure cloud, such as Azure SQL or Azure Cosmos DB."
"We have had our share of minor bugs over the past two years and a few bigger ones."
"Techs don't see to be well-versed in troubleshooting issues that arise and tickets stay opened for weeks for resolution."
"Probably the biggest issue I've had is actually paying for the unit, and part of that problem is that they use a third party for the billing."
"Support is great for small simple issues, but anything more difficult, it is hard to get good resolutions without having to badger them and their management."
"In terms of improvement, the UI, especially in the recovery section, is unclear about which repository it uses."
"The ability to run just differentials without pulling the full on your archive."
"If the interface could be less complex, it is would be great."
"It seems like Unitrends moved away from enterprise customer engagement and moved more towards the managed service provider market."
"I would like to see more storage options for the free version."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The ROI is huge. Not really measurable at this point, but the price of the unit was a fraction of what a couple hours of downtime could result in."
"Licensing is per node and per protected terabyte. You will also pay 10-15% annually for support."
"The solution's pricing is in the mid-range, where it's neither costly nor cheap."
"Sizing is important and it is easy to overestimate."
"Cohesity came in at the best price. Setup was included and done in half a day."
"The solution's pricing is quite high, more so than that of its competitors, Veeam, Veritas and Rubrik."
"The pricing model is impressive and very effective."
"With respect to pricing, make sure that you look at both Rubrik and Cohesity as they are very similar and are quite competitive."
"Talk with the sales guys. They can work with you on the best package."
"Initial pricing is competitive. Renewal pricing is steep, so make sure to project costs for the lifetime of the appliance(s)."
"Make sure you do the homework to size the solution properly. Buy the Enterprise Plus licensing if you can afford it."
"I would rate the solution's pricing a four out of ten. The licensing is yearly and it depends on the customers."
"With respect to cost, my advice is to get what you need."
"Their licensing depended on the number of CPUs you had."
"Pricing model constantly changes."
