Lacks multi-platform support and physical infrastructure but excels in storage optimization
We use it for VM backup and Office 365 backup I find the solution to be user-friendly and easy to manage and deploy. It provides storage for Office 365, which is beneficial, and the deduplication technology is excellent, especially in optimizing storage capacity compared to others. In terms of…

The solution provides the ability to backup all types of cloud drives, is inexpensive, and has decent support
MSP360 Backup provides the backup functionality, but we need to provide the storage component. We can use Azure, AWS, or another provider, but we need to choose the storage provider and create a bucket to store our data. The vendor is making changes to improve the functionality of the service and the separation of storage, but I would like to see more integration and a knowledge base of the tool. Currently trying to understand why the storage is separated and how to implement the storage properly is a challenge. Using the solution incurs additional charges for the device storage and backup which are not included in the service. Unlike other solutions such as Kohl which includes everything at one price. MSP360 Backup can be improved by adding inclusive pricing.

Pros

"Altaro Hyper-V backup is a product that, once installed, does not need much maintenance."
"This solution is stable."
"I find the solution to be user-friendly and easy to manage and deploy."
"Valuable features for us include quick recovery, compression, and deduplication, and the mix of these features leads to a reduced backup footprint while having guaranteed fast recovery in case of DR."
"No other product offers these features for this price."
"All of the features are fantastic and also the management from Microsoft dealing with multiple machines is great. The whole package is excellent for me."
"We use the latest feature in Altaro called CDP (Continuous Data Protection) to back up our VMs as often as every five minutes. It allows us to make sure no data is accidentally deleted or overwritten."
"The CDP backup feature is very nice, as it allows you to take backups at high frequencies and with application consistency."
"It has allowed me to implement a cost effective, highly configurable solution."
"The feature that I have found most valuable is its online backup capacity because you don't have to do an entire backup again and again, it just does whatever you type in, you type a, it goes a, you type b, it goes b. It doesn't take an entire site up again and again. So that incremental and bit by bit backup is important, it is a nice feature here."
"I liked the way the product worked, its flexibility on the storage and cost, and the way it was supported."
"I would recommend the solution; it's a very trustworthy solution."
"Client-side encryption minimizes worries about data being captured on the back-end."
"The solution is simple to use and easy to configure."
"The UI is pretty good. It's very simple. That is one thing that we like about this. It's very user-friendly."
"One massive advantage of this solution, as compared to more enterprise products, is that no firewall changes are needed on the client's premises. For the product to back up from the client's premise to the cloud, it just needs port 8 and port 443, which are anyway always open. This was one of the things that made us decide to go with the product. It is very difficult to justify a firewall change for a small client who doesn't even know what a firewall is and how to maintain a firewall, or doesn't have anybody maintaining their firewall. You then have to maintain the firewall. MSP360 Backup takes away firewall change requirements, VPNs, or channels that are needed for the backup."

Cons

"Storage usage: you have often to manually free disk spaces."
"Replication is not fast, the GUI could be more user-friendly, and technical support is lacking in Iran."
"The software does have occasional problems with shadow copy but restarting the services rectifies this."
"Altaro also supports booting directly from a backup drive (image), but this feature is hamstrung by the fact that it requires the backup image to be neither compressed or encrypted."
"Missing features at the moment are Linux file-level restore, backup from physical machines, German localized version, and probably full tape support (RDX is supported but there is no "real tape" support)."
"If you look into the performance of a virtual machine and you look to the performance of the physical machine, the correlation between these is totally unclear."
"The application could include a feature to install a set size of data, such as the ability to store a single application with all its registry information for easy transfer."
"Being able to backup the actual host machine would be an improvement for us."
"The initial setup is a little complex as it has to be done in the office and requires someone to come in and install the solution on your server, then configure the scheduling, backup pushing, and so on."
"The main improvement is that it should have GDPR compliance. That's the problematic point. They say they are GDPR compliant, but they are not."
"If I have an incident and I need to restore something very fast, I want to restore a particular virtual machine, maybe in an hour and that is not possible to do with MSP360."
"The graphics are looking a bit old and should be updated."
"The restore time could improve. When we had an issue the restore time was lengthy."
"They can add some production backup capabilities and the ability to do single instance back up. At the moment, it doesn't do deduplication on the standard backup. So, the issue is backing up PSG files for customers who have limited bandwidth. The other issue is that I don't like the implementation of the SQL backup. We do use SQL ourselves using a PowerShell script with the VDA tools as a module. That's how we back up. The rotation feature would be nice to have, but I know that they've got it on their dashboard or on their list to look at. They can also do a few tweaks to the dashboard. I would like the reporting capabilities on the portal to be much more granular. Normally, I export it to a text file, and then I run it through a pivot table in order to look at it from a cost-recovery point of view and to see when the backup last ran and if it was successful when it ran two or three days ago. Such a feature would work really well for my market. They can also add a cost-effective backup for Android and Apple cellphones. I've had one or two customers who were looking for this feature. I haven't found this functionality at the moment. I've been looking for a product that does that."
"The solution's pricing is very high."
"The Linux GUI leaves a lot to be desired. It lacks many of the features of the Windows version and is buggy, but it is still usable."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"There is a free version for two VMs. I would advise to study the deployment environment well, prior to committing to order a license per host."
"No other product offers these features for this price. The ROI is great."
"Its yearly maintenance fee is fairly high for me to renew for upgrades and support."
"The pricing is okay,"
"By implementing the solution at multiple locations, significant cost savings were achieved."
"There is a free version for Hosts with 2 VMs."
"Altaro had the best prices and ROI in the whole bunch that we evaluated."
"Altaro VM Backup is affordably priced. It is a best value for its price and has almost every feature that an expensive, popular product offers."
"Its pricing needs improvement."
"We have a very good return on investment."
"I rate the price of MSP360 Backup a seven out of ten."
"MSP360 is vastly cheaper than its competitors and has almost all the same features."
"The solution is expensive."
"The cost is pretty inexpensive. Around four to five dollars per device, per workstation on each server."
"Pricing is reasonable although can be quite a large upfront cost."
"It provides a good cost savings compared to our previous cloud backup."
