Works well, is easy to implement, and has upgrade analysis capabilities
Currently, it's our tier-one storage. We use it mostly for our Oracle databases It has drastically improved the performance of our high-end Oracle databases and allows us the ability to replication to a DR location with ease. We love the product. Pure Storage works really well.  The CAT tool and…

A clear winner on price per terabyte and very good for redundancy and performance
It is the core foundation for our disaster recovery plan and high availability plan. We use Peer Persistence in conjunction with VMware vSphere Metro Storage Cluster to fail over critical workloads between data centers on a quarterly basis. HPE Alletra Storage tries to provide a cloud-like operational model on-prem for managing data infrastructure. The cloud-like operational model has not affected operations such as deployment, provisioning, and day-to-day management. It is not enterprise-ready. We have not seen much evidence of the fact that HPE Alletra Storage can predict problems and prevent them before they occur. It is important that they guarantee data availability. They have had to pay up multiple times because they were not able to provide the availability, and so far, they have kept their word. HPE Alletra Storage has helped reduce the time spent on storage provisioning. It has saved about 20% of the time. With each iteration, they are getting better at their user interface. HPE Alletra Storage has improved our storage performance in terms of IOPS. There is about 50% improvement.

Offers fast data transfer between NetApp systems and highly scalable, accommodating clusters with significant storage capacity
The SnapMirror is a good tool because, as long as you're going NetApp to NetApp, it's ultimately the fastest way to move data. We replicate everything to another site for disaster recovery. We like the SnapMirror technology or Snapshot technology that allows us to recover directly off the NAS rather than backing it up to a secondary device. Just the ease of management, and it's very highly scalable. We've got one cluster that has about one and a quarter petabytes of data, and then we replicate that to an off-site. So altogether, we've got over three petabytes of data. And if it wasn't compressed and deduped like it is, we probably have more like eight or nine petabytes of data. So it does a really good job with that. AFF is obviously the faster model because our AFFs are all flash, and they're a lot faster.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The high availability of the product is the most valuable feature."
"It's helped us because we've changed fundamentally what we talk about. We don't talk about storage and different tiers of storage anymore nor do we talk about servers. We talk now about applications and how applications impact the business and end users."
"The most valuable features of this solution are its ease of use and performance."
"The solution uses newer technology for deduplication and compression."
"We're able to get higher-density workloads on the same infrastructure, and we have a smaller physical footprint. The performance is excellent – during our test the bottlenecks are never on the X array, it just keeps picking up the pace to match what you need. The real-time visibility is a differentiator in my opinion."
"FlashArray has some fresh efficiency features. I've never seen a storage solution with a compression rating this high before. It's at least 4-to-1 on Oracle databases. It's the best flash storage for Oracle."
"What I really like about this program, is that it is easy to use and easy to configurate."
"The most valuable feature of this solution is its ease of use."
"We have improved storage performance."
"It offers rich features and high speed for transferring data."
"Alletra has helped reduce the time spent resolving storage-related support tickets by about 40%."
"The GUI for onboarding is straightforward."
"The data availability guarantee is great."
"The solution has been rock-solid since we've had it."
"The reliability is very good."
"It is the simplicity of the deployment. They have unified all the features they have."
"It changed the way we do Disaster Recovery (DR) around NetApp replication."
"The SnapMirror is a good tool because, as long as you're going NetApp to NetApp, it's ultimately the fastest way to move data. We replicate everything to another site for disaster recovery."
"The tool's most valuable features are ease of use, ease of access, expandability, availability, and performance. NVMe drives have improved their performance."
"The solution is stable."
"Snapshot, deduplication, and compression features are valuable."
"Saves space with deduplication"
"The support is very good."
"The most valuable feature of the NetApp FAS Series is the snapshot and the FlexClone for Oracle and Microsoft SQL environments. Additionally, the integration can be done with most all on-premise and cloud providers."

Cons

"Many options to check performance, like read, writes, random writes, and random reads, are missing in Pure FlashArray X NVMe."
"Our use cases require more multi-tenant capabilities and additional VLAN interfaces for separating different customers. We currently use it to provide storage, sometimes shared storage, to different customers, but it is less flexible in comparison to a dedicated solution."
"I'd like to see the product implement active replication for vehicles such as VMware."
"If the customer only needs 500 terabytes and doesn't care how much data they'll put in the server, IBM is cheaper than Pure."
"I would like to see replication and DR features in the next release of this solution."
"Every time I think of something that needs to improve, they're one step ahead, which I love. The only area I wish to see improve, I believe is coming, is in the FlashBlade product. Blade implementation fell short on a few of the services."
"The tool's pricing is higher than competitors."
"It is on the expensive side."
"It's already being tied into GreenLake. However, my understanding is that the dashboards are now going to be a charge. That's concerning."
"For the 6000, we'd like to see active-active controllers."
"We faced many problems with HPE Alletra 6000, and we did not understand whether it was because of some issue with the controllers or the disk."
"We haven't had any issues with the solution so far."
"It would be great if we had a direct integration with Veeam repositories so we wouldn't have to go through Linux or Windows."
"I need the protocol expected. I want them to include NVMe protocol in VMware compatibilities."
"We had some issues while installing it on our servers. It required more resources while cross-checking. So, the initial setup process could be better."
"Due to their acquisition of Nimble, there are multiple portals. I'm hoping that that gets cleaned up."
"The high cost of the product is an area of concern, so from an improvement perspective, the tool needs to be made cheaper."
"The user interface could be improved."
"NetApp needs to put its OS on a microchip rather than on disks."
"The biggest issue we face is parts delivery. There's no local warehouse in Myanmar, so if a customer encounters a technical problem like an IMEI issue, they have to wait a long time for replacement parts."
"Cluster mode needs to be more ubiquitous."
"The high cost of the product is an area of concern, so from an improvement perspective, the tool needs to be made cheaper."
"We have some experience with older equipment end-of-life. For example, when warranty support stops or updates stop – it can be frustrating. Not all clients can buy a new filer every year or two, and NetApp ending support a bit quickly can be a concern."
"Installation of the additional switches and ETP could be improved."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The tool is an investment that we've budgeted for. While the prices may be higher than those of other vendors, we see it as a market leader with benefits. We don't regret purchasing it."
"Our licensing fees are $500,000+ USD."
"They can tout the functionality and cutting edge technology that they have, but that's where the price tag comes in. The cost is high, but I think as they grow their business and get more customers that it will probably go down a little bit."
"With VMware, we pay $300,000 annually."
"The licensing is on a yearly basis."
"The support cost per array is about $20,000 a year for 24/7 support."
"As far as the licensing costs, everything is included in the license."
"Given its price, Pure is not the first option."
"It is reasonably priced."
"HPE was a clear winner on price per terabyte. It was very smooth."
"So far, so good."
"For us, its price is good."
"There is a license. HPE Alletra uses a cloud-based model."
"Its licensing is good. Pricing-wise, there can be a little bit more flexibility. It would help to have different sizes. However, it fits into the budget that we have, so we are happy."
"It is fairly priced. It is in line with industry standard pricing and cost models."
"Overall, it was good. It had a good price per gigabyte."
"I would rate the pricing a seven out of ten, with ten being expensive. We pay a one-time purchase price."
"Most storage vendors also have software, or licensing bundles, which may offer the required licenses considerably cheaper, but do also maybe offer licenses, which are not needed."
"The price of the NetApp FAS Series is reasonable and it provides value for the money with the feature sets. NetApp FAS Series are competing with Huawei storage which has an office and does aggressive marketing with a discount. However, we found that if our customers do a technology refresh they are happy with the performance of the NetApp FAS Series."
"NetApp FAS Series could be less expensive."
"The price, compared to competitors, is quite high."
"In general, I find NetApp to be very expensive. That's the main issue I have with them. So it's a drawback in terms of pricing."
"The solution is more expensive than other vendors."
"It is expensive."
