Automation has improved alerts and file handling but script-based setup still needs simplification
OPS_MVS Automation Intelligence is the automation tool I use. I think OPS_MVS Automation Intelligence is good for creating complex rules because it's coding, but it takes time to learn how to use it. OPS_MVS Automation Intelligence works well if you know the syntax very well and you have experience in creating scripts or REXX syntax; it would be very good and is a good tool, but it takes time to learn, so that is for experienced staff to work with. I would rate the product a six from one to ten. I cannot think of any additional features in the next release of OPS_MVS Automation Intelligence.

Have integrated effective monitoring and seamless alerting with improved visualization capabilities
The most valuable feature of SCOM is its monitoring capability, and we have integrated SCOM with Grafana, which is a dashboarding tool. We have implemented and integrated this to create dashboarding of the SCOM monitoring system for the database, SQL, and the Linux servers we have configured in SCOM. We have created separate dashboarding for it, and the monitoring and creating rules and monitors in the management servers and management packs that SCOM provides are very useful for us. The alerting mechanism of SCOM has benefited our operations because we have modified the thresholds as per our internal requirements. We have configured threshold modifications for the CPU, memory, and especially for disk space. For routine disk space usage on the system, we have provided a separate threshold configuration.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"It's very flexible. You can customize what you need to, which is good. For example, you can do your own coding inside the tool, make your own scripting tooling."
"We went with the best automation solution available."
"With the automation pieces we can bring this region up or take this region down, and it allows us to always meet our time critical requirements."
"Once automatic IPL has been defined, anyone can perform an IPL with very little intervention."
"Because we can define complex commands, the training of new operators is quicker. We can also put checks in place, that will prevent user errors."
"After implementing SSM, we dropped our IPL time from 40 minutes via manual commands to eight minutes via SSM."
"I do not have to keep recordings. It is there and is proactive. It helps the operators, human editors, and me."
"What I like about it personally is that I can go out and interrupt what's going on and bring a job down if I need to, and bring it back up."
"The good reporting capabilities was one of the major functions which made us choose SCOM as the tool for handling MS application operations (only used for that, not the OS platforms)."
"This solution saves us a lot of work because it reduces the effort that is required in order to start monitoring."
"This solution helps our application teams by allowing them to drill further into issues and perform a root cause analysis."
"It has good graphs of what is going on within the operating system."
"Because it's Windows-based, it actually reports quite well, reports everything you can think of on the Windows server, and allows you to monitor anything, making it excellent for those in the Windows world as it's very good at it."
"It works better than other products I’ve used – namely SolarWinds, which is cumbersome and error prone for web app monitoring."
"If you are a large Microsoft shop then this product excels in monitoring Microsoft services."
"The solution is scalable. If you want to monitor more you have to buy more licenses, but you can add on. We don't plan to increase usage."

Cons

"With stability, sometimes we do have problems with this product."
"I think some of their built-in functions are short on functionality."
"I think, for me, I’d like to see more of its web base."
"It’s a complex product. The initial installation is easy, but implementing various functions is a constant process."
"One thing that comes to mind is the MQ interface. The last time we tried to use it, it seemed a little clunky."
"It needs to have more compatibility/interfaces to other vendors’ products."
"It was a complex setup in the mainframe environment."
"There are, however, still some restrictions with sysplex vars as far as which kinds of rules you can use them in, which is also the case for OPSHFI vars."
"The GI is difficult to work with and the reporting servers are also difficult."
"I would like to see true multi-tenancy support."
"Very expensive now that you are forced to buy entire System Center suite, although comparable to other monitoring solutions that include basic APM."
"SCOM is not as straightforward in terms of user interface or general experience, which could be improved."
"Documentation is poor, but the community makes up for it with good blogs and lots of how-to examples."
"GUI performance is the one aspect where I can see that improvement on it will make customers happy."
"In a future release, they should add email notification alerts."
"Third-party tools have had to be created to make SCOM management pack creation more efficient and effective. However, this weighs down the application as it just adds a resource requirement, which is ballooning the size of the necessary storage and all that for essentially substandard components."

Pricing and Cost Advice

Information not available
"It is the cheapest product available in the market."
"We have an EA with Microsoft, and it comes as part of the EA."
"Our Enterprise Agreement includes the price."
"There is a license needed to use this solution and it is paid annually."
"The platform is cost-effective due to our existing Microsoft support."
"SCOM is part of the System Center suite and I am satisfied with the pricing."
"Two customers bought the enterprise agreement with Microsoft and paid for Software Assurance. But few customers don't buy it for Software Assurance. They just buy it and deploy it, and they think that we will be using it for the next five years."
"SCOM is very cheap because it's included in the license for the System Center suite, which is around $8,400 per CAL."
