Automation has improved alerts and file handling but script-based setup still needs simplification
OPS_MVS Automation Intelligence is the automation tool I use. I think OPS_MVS Automation Intelligence is good for creating complex rules because it's coding, but it takes time to learn how to use it. OPS_MVS Automation Intelligence works well if you know the syntax very well and you have experience in creating scripts or REXX syntax; it would be very good and is a good tool, but it takes time to learn, so that is for experienced staff to work with. I would rate the product a six from one to ten. I cannot think of any additional features in the next release of OPS_MVS Automation Intelligence.

Have integrated effective monitoring and seamless alerting with improved visualization capabilities
The most valuable feature of SCOM is its monitoring capability, and we have integrated SCOM with Grafana, which is a dashboarding tool. We have implemented and integrated this to create dashboarding of the SCOM monitoring system for the database, SQL, and the Linux servers we have configured in SCOM. We have created separate dashboarding for it, and the monitoring and creating rules and monitors in the management servers and management packs that SCOM provides are very useful for us. The alerting mechanism of SCOM has benefited our operations because we have modified the thresholds as per our internal requirements. We have configured threshold modifications for the CPU, memory, and especially for disk space. For routine disk space usage on the system, we have provided a separate threshold configuration.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The performance of it is beyond exceptional."
"The documentation is simple, easy to follow, and use. A limited, first-time systems programmer can do it, in that it is out-of-the-box almost functional."
"The benefit is that the ROI, since it's 35 years old, is coming back over and over and over."
"It allows us to respond faster to issues. If there are issues that come out, we're able to capture a message and alert somebody about it."
"The follow-up surprised me. Making sure that I am happy with what I have gone to them on. They will call after I have made changes and verify that I am happy with the changes that I did have to make. If it did not fix the complete problem, they go back over it until I am satisfied."
"OPSMVS has made it possible to run our IT systems with fewer staff, due to the level of automation that we are able to use."
"The ease of use and operations more than makes up for the licensing cost."
"It works, and as far as the scheduling piece, it is wonderfully well-written and I use it all the time."
"This solution saves us a lot of work because it reduces the effort that is required in order to start monitoring."
"The System Center 2012 R2 is really powerful, all products work great together, is not so expensive anymore, easy to license, and can cover from end to end (Networking, Hardware layer, OS, App and services, ports, etc.)."
"The product has helped our organization with in-depth monitoring."
"The inbuilt management pack that Microsoft provides is really helpful. I know it's a mature product, and they keep upgrading the management pack."
"It takes a lot of the headache out of managing your data centers and software in other places."
"The good reporting capabilities was one of the major functions which made us choose SCOM as the tool for handling MS application operations (only used for that, not the OS platforms)."
"In every case so far we managed to move from a slow reactive type of non-monitoring toward a proactive monitoring for different layers within the organization and real insights into their IT environment from different angles."
"The most valuable feature of SCOM is real-time alerts."

Cons

"It was a complex setup in the mainframe environment."
"Some of the command sequences are too long."
"The GUI interface could be improved, but that is coming. They are working on that."
"I think some of their built-in functions are short on functionality."
"SSM - when OPSMVS is started, there is a choice of either assuming all microhooks are up or all are down and working from there. It would be better if there was a feature that could discover the true state of every microhook."
"Performing a stop/restart of OPS/MVS could be a little smoother. Without special coding, some undesired tasks will be started and some necessary tasks will be stopped if we have to bounce OPS/MVS during the day."
"With stability, sometimes we do have problems with this product."
"It definitely needs more web-based interface, to be more mobile-open. More APIs, more open source to it."
"I would like to see better support for monitoring Unix-based systems."
"There are some negative points about this product. Sometimes, the capabilities of the software don't appear, and you can't directly see the results. You have to wait for a long period to refresh the policy to push it to the software or other patches."
"I would like to see them improve their network monitoring."
"Overall, I find that this is a good solution but the presentation layer is really bad."
"Regarding certain issues in the solution, it can be difficult to generate reports if we have a program that is not user-friendly for reporting. While this is not necessarily negative, we may need to use another solution."
"I feel that the stability of the tool has room for improvement and I would like to see that in the next version."
"They could provide better dashboards, detailed logs, and reports crucial for monitoring services in real-time."
"The console is a point to improve, because it is very heavy and a web console should be in HTML5."
