Expert Backup at a tech services company with 201-500 employees
A virtual deduplication backup appliance that protects physical and virtual data across remote sites, the datacenter and cloud deployments
Given its ease of use and management, I believe there are no specific caveats that users need to be aware of during the setup of DXRIS for backups. The process was straightforward, and I did not encounter any challenges or issues. As for a rating on a scale of one to ten, with one being the worst and ten being the best, I would rate the Quantum DXI Series a nine. My deduction is primarily influenced by personal preferences, particularly regarding the user interface and it is a highly commendable system, I would rate it a solid nine out of ten.

Unified backups have protected virtual machines and applications and optimize storage efficiency
Regarding automated disaster recovery, we have not used Veritas NetBackup automated disaster recovery because according to the RFP terms and conditions, we are not supposed to have automated failover or failback, as we are a government entity and cannot violate the rules of the RFP. My feedback about granular recovery in Veritas NetBackup is that we have been doing verifications of the backed-up data to restore from point to point and time to time, focusing on file level or database level. When it comes to integration with cloud services, we have not started because we are a government entity and are not allowed to store any data in the cloud at this time. From security concerns regarding what I would improve about Veritas NetBackup, I think you need to look into this because we found only one encryption option available, which is not that very strong. When I initiate a backup from my laptop or server to the appliance or the tape media using Veritas NetBackup, the encryption channels are not strong, and there are not many options available. Whatever is there is by default and not changeable. We cannot modify any encryption facilities, and security is a big concern nowadays, so you need to look into that. Regarding the functionality part of Veritas NetBackup, I think this encryption feature should be stronger and integrated from point to point, not just at specific levels. When I initiate a backup, all the communication channels involved should be encrypted until it reaches the endpoint, meaning from client to server, server to client, and client device.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"I am impressed with the tool's technical alliance with Veeam and Veritas."
"While the challenges posed by the difficulties were significant, they prompted the replacement of problematic components, resulting in the resolution of issues. Importantly, there were no substantial ongoing concerns. Regarding the overall performance, it has been consistently excellent."
"Deduplication is the most valuable feature as it reduces the backup time and provides backup of a single copy of data as opposed to multiple versions of the same file."
"Veritas is stable and flexible."
"The main thing I like about NetBackup is CloudPoint, where you can take a snapshot of the endpoint and back it up, with strong data backups, simplified GUIs, and many built-in security features and intelligent cloud policies that make it more direct than many others."
"It is an excellent product, i.e., if you are looking for a stable and performance oriented backup infrastructure with improved RPO and RTO."
"We can easily expand the ability of the solution."
"The solution is easy to scale."
"Veritas is the market leader in enterprise backup software, with all the required features that are available in the market, always staying one step ahead, and deployment is easy as they have all the documentation required."
"Based on my experience of using enterprise-grade backup solutions for a long time, easy management and deployment generally don't happen for enterprises, but in the end we are able to get features, such as easy management and combined centralized management, with Veritas."

Cons

"Perhaps the most notable area for enhancement lies in the web interface for management. The current limitations in LDAP editing capabilities are not addressed in the UI, and I haven't observed any recent updates. It's possible that the new version of the DXI service incorporates improvements in the GUI, but I cannot confirm. While there is room for improvement in the current GUI, it remains a relatively minor issue. Overall, the system is comprehensive, covering aspects such as reports on latency and networking, leaving little room for additional enhancements in those areas."
"The product needs to improve performance while scaling out. It also needs to improve stability."
"The solution is not that stable because it has to be monitored and administered every day."
"In terms of improvement, it's very difficult to make it work with multiple business units. Its security model is too constricted."
"Within their product lineup, they need to consolidate down to one product. Veritas doesn't have one product that does everything. So, Veritas can do everything, but you basically need to run two products. I would like them to combine all the capabilities into one release."
"The restoration method and the compression ratio need improvement."
"This product would be improved with the inclusion of a Sandbox feature like Veeam Sandbox."
"It should be able to integrate with the cloud. If we leverage a cloud in the future for backup, there should be very fast help and more options for customers to choose from."
"The user interface could improve, it seems a bit out of date."
"The biggest problem with NetBackup is licensing."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"I do not oversee this aspect, as pricing is contingent on factors such as volume, technical specifications, and the desired features. Consequently, I lack information on the pricing details and structure."
"Veritas NetBackup is more expensive than Cohesity and Rubrik, but it is comparable in price to Commvault, IBM, and Dell."
"The licensing model for this solution is very powerful."
"This is an affordable solution"
"The licensing fees are expensive."
"Veritas NetBackup's price could be a problem for small businesses."
"The price of Veritas NetBackup is high, it should be reduced."
"The software and license are very expensive."
"Acceptable if you need to implement it for larger environments, e.g. over 1000 clients. For smaller setups it might be too expensive."
