Enables secure and flexible branch connectivity with application-aware routing
The valuable features of Cisco SD-WAN include its security policies and zone-based firewall that are applied to every site, as well as application-aware routing. Security is standard compliant, eliminating config drift that was prevalent before manual configurations. Application-aware routing offers flexibility in using different lines for traffic, depending on the policy implemented.

Enables productivity in terms of users and has ease of management
Scalability could be improved. Yes, you can add more than 300 or 400 sites onto it, but because it's not a true SD-WAN and, effectively, it's just a Multi-VRF, it's all hub and spoke at that point. That's the nature of the design, but that's what keeps it simple to administer. So, it's a trade off.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"This solution comes with comprehensive technical support."
"From my observations, Cisco has been rolling out new features every other day, so I would say their speed of innovation is one of the most valuable aspects for me."
"Using SD-WAN to combine services can result in better up time, higher speeds, and much lower costs."
"The first part that we like is that we can reuse certain hardware, which is a valuable asset. You can use hardware SKUs that already exist in the network. The second part that we like is the integration with the cloud and the measurement of the cloud's quality. These are the two values that this solution gives as compared to other implementations that we have seen."
"The most valuable features of Cisco SD-WAN are reliability and scalability."
"The solution is good to use and easy to handle and manage from the centralized location or from the cloud."
"The scalability is the most valuable feature."
"Initial setup is easy."
"The auto VPN feature is important because it automates many tasks, making things simpler and faster. It helps with setting up devices and changing configurations without manual effort."
"Meraki can react fast to emerging trends."
"We have found the product to be quite scalable."
"Meraki SD-WAN is scalable."
"I appreciate the cloud-based management feature the most. It's a crucial aspect for me because it allows me to manage the configuration remotely without having to visit the on-premise location. The ability to do this from my home is a major benefit. Additionally, security is good."
"The integration of security features is important, although there is room for improvement."
"The solution is a whole vertical solution, so it doesn't need any other components in order to provide basic features."
"They're known for their ease of use and ubiquitous management platform that covers everything. Meraki really excels in plug-and-play solutions. You just plug it up, and everything works. All of the components—the firewall/router, the switches, the access points, the cameras—work very nicely together, and they all can be managed from one platform. That is probably their biggest selling point. Everything comes in one ubiquitous package, and you don't have to manage different components from different platforms. You can see everything from one platform."

Cons

"We have had some problems with the licensing model, and it is something that should be improved."
"The solution needs to be more flexible around legacy devices."
"What I find should be improved is the possibility of really separating the software layer from the hardware layer since today the current offer is not well adopted by the service providers"
"The deployment is complex."
"The initial setup was not very straightforward, but it gets easier the more deployments you complete."
"Technical support could be more helpful and responsive."
"The bandwidth limitations would be good to remove, but it is a policy and license situation for Cisco because the cost is very high. It would be good to have OTP implemented with VRF. It can have support for EIGRP Over the Top (OTP) VRF. I saw some limitations in regards to the VRF protocol and the advertisement between VRF configuration. EIGRP Over the Top basically was quite limited with the VRF configuration. If you wanted to do rollback in VRF by using the EIGRP OTP protocol, the formation was not populated across. Cisco got back and confirmed that it is a configuration that I need to wait for until the next release, which is going to happen in one year. Cisco documentation is not the way it used to be before. It just gives an easy way to configure, but it doesn't go into the details of the configuration. The information that you need is there, but sometimes you want to go further and get more information, but the information is quite limited. It would be good to cover a few business cases or configuration cases. They used to be there in the past."
"Some configurations or procedures could be more user-friendly. Adding a bandwidth management feature would make Cisco SD-WAN more scalable and less resource-intensive."
"The integration with other tools must be improved."
"Meraki SD-WAN could be improved by including full feature routing functions similar to a normal Cisco router."
"People are struggling a little bit with the lead times right now. It’s hard to actually get the hardware."
"Meraki SD-WAN could improve by adding wireless access time-scheduled and overall capabilities."
"Meraki is more or less intelligent load balancing, although a lot of features are missing that our SD-WAN solutions will have."
"There should be a few more options for security parameters. It is currently not very customizable. It should be a little bit more customizable."
"Overall, we are satisfied with the support, although I cannot state this unequivocally."
"We have a lot of problems with distribution. The late deliveries likely have to do with the time it takes for the fabrication of components. It is a principal problem at this moment."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Cisco is more expensive than FortiGate."
"The Cisco SD-WAN licensing model needs to be simplified. There are currently three types of licenses: enterprise agreements, individual licenses, and DNA subscriptions. This can confuse customers, requiring a dedicated person to determine which type of license is right for their organization."
"Cisco SD-WAN is more expensive than its competitors."
"It is going to be on a yearly basis. There are no additional costs."
"In the Russian market where we operate, this solution is expensive."
"The initial cost is quite significant, but the investment is worthwhile."
"The license model is too complex with too many flavors and options. You might not be able to see it from an end user's point of view, but from a telco point of view, their license model is too complex. They should have a flexible license model. If you want to have good pricing, you need to buy it for a two-year, four-year, or five-year license immediately. Some other vendors have much more flexible license models."
"When purchasing, there are so many features available that it's quite confusing deciding which to choose. And some of the devices force you to buy licenses you don't want."
"The price of this solution is good, it is not expensive."
"Our clients pay Meraki an annual licensing fee and the pricing is not too bad when compared to other products in the Cisco portfolio."
"One of the most valuable aspects of Meraki SD-WAN is the price. It is highly cost-effective."
"The pricing is fair, but if they can make it less it would be even more attractive."
"This solution is more expensive than competitors."
"The tool is costly. I rate the tool's price as a ten out of ten since it is very expensive."
"Any license you buy until January 2021 gets you an extra year for that purchase."
"The pricing is reasonable and we can choose the software or the feature."
