Backup operations have become faster and daily recoveries run smoothly for on‑prem workloads
When compared to other tools, the deduplication in Cohesity DataProtect is very fast, and the restore performance is better than other tools. Global deduplication ensures that only unique data blocks are stored, significantly reducing storage consumption. Cohesity DataProtect's dashboard displays options and errors clearly, making it easy to access and understand how to fix issues. Cohesity DataProtect's ability to start processes automatically without manual selections enhances its reliability. Cohesity DataProtect's architecture ensures that agent installations automatically reflect in the dashboard, allowing for seamless integration into backup jobs. This improves operational efficiency, ensuring backups can be triggered without manual refreshes. Additionally, the user interface is intuitive, and the respect of the N-1 rule during updates helps prevent client-affecting issues.

Provides enterprise-level protection from ransomware attacks
Speaking about how the product is deployed in my company's business operations, I would say that it is an appliance with a critical infrastructure. In terms of data protection capabilities, the tool's ability to boot a device and have a separate network has saved the day for many of our company's clients who use the solution. If you have a collection of old servers, and if one of the old servers dies, you could be dead in the water if you cannot locally boot a server. Even the new gears in place can have an issue if people are not spending money on robust hardware tools, and replace them. It is necessary to have the local boot options if and when you have a hardware issue. The product brings the most value in the area of virtual boot when it comes to disaster recovery since it can boot up a version of the server from before an incident, which is helpful and allows your company to have a lower RPO or recovery point objective. It makes a big difference if you can have an RPO in hours rather than in days. The image-based backup functionality has revolutionized and impacted our company recovery time objectives since we deal in hours and not in days. The interface of the product is intuitive. I like the product's functionality that provides the ability to see everything at a glance, along with the alerting feature. Maintenance is required since certain drives die at times. In general, maintenance is required to deal with dead RAMs and hard drives. The former clients with small offices and the old Linux servers that used to die in production used to boot such servers with the help of Datto Cloud Continuity. The aforementioned process allows the clients to continue running their business while buying time to get replacement hardware, making a big difference that helps them reduce potential data loss or downtime. The local boot provided by the product saved the day for many of our company's clients. I recommend the product to those who plan to use it. Though the tool is not inexpensive, it provides enterprise-level protection from ransomware. I rate the overall tool a nine out of ten.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Its most valuable feature is its ransomware protection, so it has immutable backups."
"No longer does it take several hours to backup a VM or troubleshoot a backup issue."
"The dashboard is very rich and provides details needed for a moderator."
"We see that one part of the market really likes the Commvault features and functionality, but there is another part in the Dutch market that says, "I don't want all that complexity, I just want it set and go," and that's when we're positioning Cohesity."
"After linking a cloud subscription, like Azure for example (AWS and Google are also supported), you can "spin" a VM onto the cloud from any backup snapshot."
"The ease of use and the GUI have really been most valuable to us. Configuring the system to do what we need is simple and straight forward and a lot of guesswork has been removed. One of my favorite features with Cohesity is Kroll for Exchange item-level recovery. The software is simple to use and fast."
"It's completely reliable and easy to restore."
"Cohesity DataProtect is more of a unified solution, which is also trying to expand for ransomware protection."
"They are laser-focused on bringing forth proven protection technologies and stopping cybercriminals from being able to breach, break, steal, or compromise your data."
"The platform provides a faster backup process."
"The recovery time objective and recovery point objective were most valuable. It was easy to use, and it was easy to recover a file. I was the head of sales and a product evaluator for an MSSP, so I never had to deal with recovery from ransomware. However, I was confident that if ransomware had occurred, I would only lose a maximum of 59 minutes of data. The files were encrypted."
"The product's initial setup phase is easy."
"For local backup, it works well."
"The data recovery of the solution is very good."
"The solution has the capability to scale well."
"The solution's reliability is one of its most valuable features...It is a very stable solution."

Cons

"You need to put the full name instead of a few letters while searching for backup. It should also improve customization."
"We aren't missing any features. In terms of the solution overall, it's so far so good."
"At times, you may click the wrong server or click too fast and accidentally restore a cluster of servers. It would be very helpful to have a cancel option under restores."
"Quality testing of upgrades should be somewhat improved."
"We aren't missing any features. In terms of the solution overall, it's so far so good."
"We are highly dissatisfied with the level of support and functionality provided for HANA within the Cohesity product."
"The error handling could be improved."
"The platform has certain limitations, mostly stemming from the restrictions imposed by the VMware API and some other factors. One area where there is room for improvement is the tracking of replicated copies, especially in the context of remote archive duplication."
"The fact that Datto Cloud Continuity is not cheap is one of the aspects that I don't like about the product, making it an area where improvements are required."
"I don't have any feedback to provide in terms of features that may be lacking."
"I don't have any feedback to provide in terms of features that may be lacking."
"At the time I was using it, I would've focused more on signatures of malicious software in the cloud."
"Right now the appliances have a functional limit of 50 protected servers each."
"Datto's only shortcoming is RMM. They have a portal-based connection service like ConnectWise, but it does backups and keeps things running. Datto purchased Backupify and Kaseya bought Datto. If they upped the ante in their RMM, I could see them dominating the MSP space. At the end of the day, MSPs are responsible for networks, software, devices, and backup. Datto covers all these functions so they could offer a turnkey MSP solution."
"To better integrate compatibility with other operating systems, in addition to Windows Server."
"Datto chose to build their own cloud, instead of leveraging AWS, Azure or GCP. It looks, feels and behaves like a beta product (lacks maturity)."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"On a scale from one to ten, where one is cheap and ten is expensive, I rate the solution's pricing a seven out of ten."
"Ensure that you understand the per TB licensing model. Also, Exchange backups are not native to Cohesity and require Kroll."
"The solution's pricing is quite high, more so than that of its competitors, Veeam, Veritas and Rubrik."
"Cohesity came in at the best price."
"From my last assessment, the pricing for Cohesity DataProtect was reasonable. Compared to its closest competitor, Rubrik, I found Rubrik's pricing to be somewhat high-end. While Rubrik may have more advanced security features than Cohesity DataProtect currently, Cohesity DataProtect is releasing a new solution in the near future that will compete directly with Rubrik."
"It has reasonable pricing, and we know they can give discounts. If you look at the primary pricing or the list pricing, it conforms to the market pricing, but you have to have a discount on it. Otherwise, it is way too expensive."
"If SQL is in heavy use at your location, I would highly recommend narrowing your PoC testing to Cohesity and Rubrik. They will be competitive on pricing with each other, so really put them through the paces."
"The tool's licensing costs are yearly. It is cheaper than other backup solutions."
"I rate the product price an eight on a scale of one to ten, where one is low price and ten is high price."
"As the company grew from business continuity—or what used to be called business BCDR—they brought on services. Certain services, such as SaaS protection, were a value-add, but you would expect to pay for them. They are not going to be free. It is just the life that you live when you're evaluating software vendors, partners, etc. There is going to be some form of a base offering, and then there are going to be different tiers that you need to get up to a better level."
