Snapshots allow you to restore or view the image on either the DR or production side if data is compromised and integrate seamlessly with Dell EMC storage
I've worked closely with Dell since 2007. Back then, we could create a "Severity 1" case. I think they've discontinued that option. Now, you can create a "Severity 2" case. For Severity 1 issues, you can call the helpline. I've often recommended to Dell EMC Pakistan that there should be a portal option to create Severity 1 cases. Their engineers are good, but since COVID, many experienced engineers have left the company. This is a problem for every vendor, not just Dell EMC – they face challenges finding experienced technical engineers. So, while I recommend Dell EMC, sometimes they don't have the technical staff for very quick responses. In those cases, you might need to engage your account manager to find the best engineer on a Severity 1 issue.

RPO and RTO have improved drastically
The main pain point that we experienced is during device creation. For every newly provisioned volume, creating replication relationships between production and DR site, creating snapshots for third copy at DR site, and configuring them in appropriate replication groups and device groups means that there are lot of steps involved and a lot of room for error. There has to be a lot of checks and balances which need to be incorporated to make sure that the solution is set up correctly.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The product does block-level replication very well."
"The image backup feature is great. For example, if you set the journal to take a backup every ten minutes, it will create a snapshot or pointer every ten minutes for as long as you need."
"The tool's most valuable feature is stability."
"RecoverPoint's most valuable feature is the automatic failover."
"The most valuable features include the ease of defining contingency groups and the drag-and-drop functionality, which speeds up our application processes."
"We use RecoverPoint for disaster recovery and asynchronous replication, and we use the application at a block level, not the software level. This has been tested, and it's very durable."
"The most valuable feature we have found in RecoverPoint is its ability to provide the lowest RPO."
"The solution is very stable. Once it's installed, many customers forget they even have it."
"We've found the support to be very good overall."
"The feature of taking snapshots from the replicated volumes has allowed us to use them for DR testing to validate the application consistent point of recovery."

Cons

"In the future, I would like Dell RecoverPoint to evolve as an orchestration tool that can integrate with other replication tools such as Microsoft native replication and Oracle Data Guard."
"The support is horrible."
"Other hypervisors should be integrated with this system. Other hypervisors should be able to get the benefits of this solution."
"RecoverPoint is designed to integrate seamlessly with Dell EMC storage. If you don't have Dell EMC storage, you can't use it with other brands like IBM or HP."
"The product should provide integration with new products."
"Considering the speed Dell RecoverPoint can recover data, it would be good if we could replicate data from on-premise to the cloud with this solution."
"Integration with VMware is the only thing we need to improve. Another feature I'd like to see is the ability to convert management to HTML. And the integration should also be done on the same level."
"It is worth mentioning that this solution is no longer supported, primarily because it doesn't replicate between two different storage systems anymore."
"If you are new to the product, the initial setup might be a bit difficult."

"Support is an additional subscription."
"The product is fairly priced."
"RecoverPoint came free as an add-on to the PowerProtect Data Manager backup software from Dell EMC."
"The price is moderate."
"It is considered quite costly."
