Improves infrastructure planning by helping us analyze network traffic
We use SevOne to collect and report on network flows SevOne improves infrastructure planning by helping us analyze network traffic. We can look at bandwidth for specific endpoints on the customer's network and analyze traffic to identify issues. For example, maybe some connectors are unavailable.…

There is a disadvantage when it comes to sampling intervals. While the solution supports sampling as fine as one millisecond, it requires a copy at that interval. My Python script allows me to achieve a granularity of up to ten microseconds, but I can't go beyond that. When dealing with provisioning on both issues, it would be beneficial if I could go down to the microsecond level, if not the nanosecond. Additionally, I've heard from a colleague that Wireshark might be less effective in the voice domain.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"It has been a godsend and has brought us 11 months of stability, the likes of which I'd never seen before in 15 years with the company."
"Based on my experience, the stability of IBM SevOne Network Performance Management (NPM) is excellent."
"The reporting capabilities provided important metrics and data that helped in the oversight of our system, network, and overall IT infrastructure, both in terms of applications and hardware."
"One of the benefits is that we've been able to leverage one tool to do a lot of things."
"The most valuable features for us are the huge number of network devices it can monitor."
"This performance data is key, and having such integration means that we get value out of SevOne fairly quickly."
"SevOne provides support for all universal connectors. They internally work with other data sources to get features implemented. We have an SD-WAN implementation and use other app data to monitor performance. If you pull that data into one centralized location, that is very useful for management."
"Scalability. I have never had to worry about how to handle really big environments."
"The solution is open-source and free to use, and there is a paid tier with more features if a company needs a bit more."
"Wireshark saves a lot of time, especially with network troubleshooting."
"Wireshark is the world's most powerful network protocol analyzer tool."
"I use this free, open-source solution daily for packet analysis, and the packet details pane is particularly valuable."
"Being able to dissect email data and figure out what is inside email messages was the most valuable feature. Such a feature is pretty helpful for an ongoing forensic investigation or when there is a potential insider threat that you are trying to investigate. It allows you to see the network activity of the users you are investigating. It also gives you more visibility into your network. It was very easy to set up. There is a lot of information out there on Google and YouTube about how to use it. There is also community support. If you have any trouble, it is pretty easy to find an answer online. You will have to do some digging only if you have a very specific use case."
"The transmission and reception issues are valuable."
"Setup is very easy. It's also possible to change source code and compile if you want to change something in the code, because it's free."
"The strongest feature of this solution, is the ability it gives us to carry out deep-packet inspections on our network, particularly when a function isn't performing as it should."

Cons

"As I mentioned before, there are cheaper solutions available."
"The one area with room for improvement is probably administration. They added data insights to make a better user experience, but I'd like to see some improvements in the way the system is administered."
"You need to plan integrations; that has been the biggest bug with SevOne so far."
"Although it is a very good monitoring tool, it can be confusing when you try to add devices and they don’t appear correctly."
"User-friendly, multi-tenancy."
"The GUI: both the dashboard/user view and the admin tool."
"There are a lot of pain points. My main problem is that we don't have a high availability system."
"With the administrative management of the appliance, if some object appears from SevOne because something changed in the network or whatever, then as an administrator you will not be aware."
"One con is that this software is only an observer, not an interactive component of the network, meaning you cant change anything with it."
"We'd like to be able to extract the output into an Excel table."
"Can be difficult for non packet heads to understand"
"The solution’s user interface could be improved."
"I would like to see Wireshark improve the ease of application of the command. The command is very powerful, but not easy to apply."
"The product is great but I wish there were more of an emphasis on the command line tools."
"Big trace files (more than 1,000,000 packets) can be slow, but then you can use "TraceWrangler" (also free) to help with slicing and dicing the data."
"Its user interface was a little less friendly. They can make its user interface a little bit more friendly."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Choose a SevOne partner who can provide SevOne as a service and can deliver professional services and maintenance."
"Prices per license are not huge, but they exist."
"Although I don't have exact details in terms of cost, my experience has been that SevOne is willing to make a deal with the customer."
"It is inexpensive compared to other monitoring tools."
"The pricing has not evolved with the market, which is one of the reasons we are moving to a new product."
"There are cheaper solutions available."
"A blocking point is the high upfront cost because it is challenging to get it accepted and the purchase approved."
"The pricing has been fair."
"It's free."
"Wireshark is free of charge, and there's no license involved."
"It is an open-source solution."
"Wireshark is open source and gives great value and functionality to the network investigation."
"Wireshark is open-source and free of charge."
"I've never personally had to pay for it, making it a highly valuable internet resource that's accessible for use. While they offer some paid versions, our firm has utilized the free version for the past three years."
"It is free."
"The solution is open source so is free."
