Improves infrastructure planning by helping us analyze network traffic
We use SevOne to collect and report on network flows SevOne improves infrastructure planning by helping us analyze network traffic. We can look at bandwidth for specific endpoints on the customer's network and analyze traffic to identify issues. For example, maybe some connectors are unavailable.…

There is a disadvantage when it comes to sampling intervals. While the solution supports sampling as fine as one millisecond, it requires a copy at that interval. My Python script allows me to achieve a granularity of up to ten microseconds, but I can't go beyond that. When dealing with provisioning on both issues, it would be beneficial if I could go down to the microsecond level, if not the nanosecond. Additionally, I've heard from a colleague that Wireshark might be less effective in the voice domain.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The modules and the performance management reports that come with data insights are two of the most valuable features. I also find the reports for Wi-Fi, Netflow, LAN, and WAN for monitoring to be very good."
"Instant graphs, high frequency polling and the ability to create reports on the fly are the most valuable features we currently use."
"The most valuable feature as of late has been the API integration with ServiceNow."
"With this tool it is interesting to show the info to the client and explain where the traffic is."
"As an IT Manager this tool helps me sleep better knowing that SevOne is my eyes and ears watching the entire infrastructure."
"It has been a godsend and has brought us 11 months of stability, the likes of which I'd never seen before in 15 years with the company."
"This performance data is key, and having such integration means that we get value out of SevOne fairly quickly."
"SevOne enables us to look at the data and see that the customer has disconnected so we can stop billing and reimbursing them."
"The solution is open-source and free to use, and there is a paid tier with more features if a company needs a bit more."
"I use this free, open-source solution daily for packet analysis, and the packet details pane is particularly valuable."
"Wireshark is a good tool to start with network analyzing and packet capturing."
"Wireshark analyzes networks, captures traffic and decrypts information passed through the communication channels into a form that is readable and can thus be used to learn how network protocols work."
"The drill-down available for packet analysis is great, as it gives a network security engineer insight into what is going on at the packet level and enables better troubleshooting."
"Wireshark has been getting better and better in the time I've been using it and it is a very helpful tool."
"It has good basic features."
"The most valuable feature is the traffic gate, which shows which IPs are getting more bandwidth or traffic."

Cons

"Software upgrades can be tricky."
"The one area with room for improvement is probably administration. They added data insights to make a better user experience, but I'd like to see some improvements in the way the system's administered."
"One area that requires a little bit of improvement is the topology of visualization and being able to map out connections, end-to-end."
"We initially had issues getting the product to accommodate the number of network devices to monitor."
"The reports are easy to configure but they are a bit outdated in terms of appearance and visualization."
"In terms of having a complete view of our network performance, I would rate it a nine out of 10. The reason for not giving it a 10 is that there is no packet capture associated with SevOne, but we do have other tools in place to do that."
"As I mentioned before, there are cheaper solutions available."
"On a scale of one to ten, I am neutral because it is not too good and not too bad."
"I would like better control of bandwidth from the service provider."
"Cannot be used to diagnose any kind of network intrusions and hacking exploits."
"The decryption of encrypted packets could be better."
"I was unable to use Wireshark on Windows, and I couldn't capture it, as I'm unsure how to configure the wireless card into monitoring mode on Windows."
"Wireshark gets stuck when it is a larger file."
"DNS could be improved."
"In the future, it would be nice to see color coding. It is just black and white."
"One con is that this software is only an observer, not an interactive component of the network, meaning you cant change anything with it."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Prices per license are not huge, but they exist."
"Many tools price things based on the number of KPIs that you're collecting around a device. In many cases, there could be hundreds of metrics that you need to collect. SevOne provides device-level pricing. That gives us the flexibility to turn on, and expand on, the metrics that we're collecting around those devices, without taking a financial hit."
"There are different options available for licensing, with the per-device option being more expensive but more flexible."
"For the value that you get from SevOne, it's worth the price. There are a lot of cheaper alternatives on the market, and even free options. But they require more staff, more resources, and engineers with more advanced knowledge of monitoring. That's what makes SevOne worth the price."
"The pricing has been fair."
"Although I don't have exact details in terms of cost, my experience has been that SevOne is willing to make a deal with the customer."
"The tool is not expensive. We were able to negotiate with SevOne on pricing."
"There are cheaper solutions available."
"We're using the free version of Wireshark."
"It's free."
"Wireshark is open-source and free of charge."
"It is free."
"I am using the free version of this solution."
"It is an open-source solution."
"We are using a freeware version of this solution, so there are no licence costs involved."
"Wireshark is free of charge, and there's no license involved."
