Enables organizations to make large-scale recoveries easily, but the security must be improved
IBM Spectrum Protect Plus is a backup solution. We can schedule our backups The solution provides different backup policies. We can configure any policy according to the policy followed in our organization. We can also define the retention period, the number of copies we want, and the backup…

Covers a large spectrum of products and operating systems and part of a multi-layer strategy for data protection
We use it like any other backup solution for resource restoration when needed and for populating systems in environments with data. We use NetBackup's data management strategies for multi-target backups and retentions. That's the short answer. The full explanation is quite involved. It would require describing our environment, our workflows, and how we use policies and vaulting policies to move data around. But to keep it brief, NetBackup simplifies managing data across multiple targets with various retention periods. NetBackup is part of a multi-layer strategy. It's one of the many tools we use, to ensure we don't rely on a single product. So, the product has positively impacted our protection strategy. Moreover, we're satisfied with its performance when it comes to the deduplication function.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The most valuable feature of IBM Spectrum Protect Plus is the deduplication functionality. The clients moved to this solution originally because of this feature."
"Using this tool, we can easily backup and restore or recover the data for PCs and mobiles in case of system crashes."
"With this product, we now have a reliable backup solution."
"The most valuable features are the API features because it allows you to integrate with your Microsoft SQL, your Oracle, and your IBM Db2."
"If the system were to go down, we needed to make sure that the system could be recovered and available as soon as possible. Spectrum Protect provides you access to directly bind the backup volume to the server and make the system available instead of restoring it and copying the system."
"We used to use the solution with tapes a few years ago. We've switched to discs, and it has gotten much faster."
"The most valuable feature is the ease of use."
"The tool has enough documentation; you don't need to contact the support team."
"The most valuable features are the VMware VADP backups and the support for data domains."
"I think this is the best backup solution that we have. It is very good for the infrastructure."
"This is a product that has been on the market for a while and they have mastered the backup process, especially when backing up to tape, for most environments."
"The most valuable feature is its stability."
"Disaster recovery primarily involves backup usage. We employ it for both backup and recovery purposes. The backup and recovery processes have been executed multiple times, even restoring data from backups created three to four years ago."
"The backup speed is extremely high and the simplicity of NetBackup is commendable."
"We have a file server and our data file server, everything. We use it for VM server backup, too."
"There's a very nice central console for the administration of all of the instances."

Cons

"The backup support for IBM Power Virtualization needs to be added."
"I would like to see continuous data protection (CDP). If there is machine failure, you don't have to go to the backup copy that you took 12 hours ago. You can actually go back to the backup copy made half an hour ago. That is, it would be good to have certain-point-in-time recovery."
"The user experience is very bad and the interface needs to be improved."
"You end up needing to do a lot of troubleshooting to get things to work effectively."
"The software's technical support could improve its response time for different time zones."
"IBM Spectrum Protect Plus could improve the IBM Spectrum Protect environment. It can be difficult to administer. The initial configuration can be difficult for entry-level teams or deployment teams, and it might be difficult to integrate. There's just too much content involved in the solution. The documentation is way too large."
"The tool needs to increase the number of threats."
"The replication feature is not available."
"System administrators would be more efficient in NetBackup if the number of tools and command lines was reduced."
"GUI needs to be more user-friendly."
"Veritas could simplify the firmware recovery in terms of the deployed. The process shouldn't be dependent on the agents. It should be completely agentless."
"The solution is not that stable because it has to be monitored and administered every day. The stability could be improved."
"There have been issues with performance and some features."
"The backup operation interface is not as mature as those of Veritas's competitors and has room for improvement."
"Technical support only gets back to us the following morning."
"Its integration with Nutanix and technical support can be improved."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"There is an annual license required to use IBM Spectrum Protect Plus. The cost of the license could improve, it is expensive."
"There are a few options available for purchasing the solutions. Overall, the price of the is high."
"Unlike some other solutions, such as Veritas NetBackup where you have to pay for different licenses to use different features, there is a single license that allows you to use all of the features."
"The initial cost of the product is perpetual but the support fees are billed annually."
"IBM Spectrum Protect Plus is a little expensive."
"We have a perpetual license for the tool since it is deployed on-premise."
"The solution is too expensive."
"The licensing model of Spectrum Protect Plus is more efficient and cheaper compared to the original."
"It is reasonably priced."
"We are very satisfied with the price of this solution."
"Veritas NetBackup is quite expensive and licensing costs are fixed."
"It is slightly more expensive than Commvault, but it is pretty much the same. It is an enterprise solution, so it scales quite well. It has a lot of features. So, you pay for what you get. It is not cheap, but it is fit for the purpose."
"It was on a yearly basis. During the annual review, when we asked them about our licensing, they couldn't explain it. For example, we had reduced by a factor of 40%, but our license only dropped by 5%. We would then ask Veritas people if we've reduced this much and shut down these servers, why has our license changed so less? They were never able to give us a straight answer. They weren't able to say, "Well, you're using this, and this is more expensive." In many cases, as we reduced our capacity and what we were using with Veritas NetBackup, our licensing actually went up, and they were often unable to explain why."
"Smaller virtualized environments will want to stick to a traditional licensing model if possible. It will likely be cheaper, but it is a pain to manage all the individual licenses for each client."
"My licensing model is based on capacity so as we grow, the price we pay increases and it becomes too expensive."
"Licensing was very expensive and did not scale well if needed to move between license models."
