Offers single sign-on feature for business applications but needs to offer personalized insights
We use the product as a single sign-on for our business applications.  Microsoft Entra Verified ID is our primary way of authenticating into ServiceNow apps. It helps us to stay connected in the company.  I like the Microsoft Authenticator app since it comes with two-factor authentication.  I…

User friendly with good documentation but needs to cover more non-Microsoft use cases
Non-Microsoft use cases are not very high. It's limited for now. They are continuously trying to evolve and trying to provide the latest right now. It is mature only on the more popular open source kind of applications or source tools. That is a limitation that it brings in. That said, if you already have a complete Microsoft stack then it will work really well. They still need more coverage on Microsoft Dynamics 365. It's an area they are still working on. The lineage data capabilities could be improved. They need data quality as a solution. They need to have that as part of their suite. If I want to drive governance and adoption, when it comes to dashboarding and understanding maturity, it still needs work. There are other better, more competitive tools.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The most valuable features of the solution are mainly in the areas of security and auditing."
"I like the Microsoft Authenticator app since it comes with two-factor authentication."
"The e-discovery search is useful."
"My favorite Purview feature is auto-scanning. Once we set up Purview, we can automatically scan multiple data sources when new data comes into specific databases, like SQL and Oracle. We don't need to rediscover the new data or do anything manually because it automatically happens."
"The labeling is the most valuable feature for the companies I'm installing it for. Some of them have several thousand staff, and their concerns are around confidential or private data being shared. The labels and the policies involved with them give them that initial visibility."
"Their data labeling or data classification is particularly valuable because we want to categorize all of our data into confidential, public, or internal."
"The integration ecosystem with Microsoft Purview is the most valuable aspect."
"The most valuable aspect of Purview is its PowerShell connectivity, enabling automation."
"My favorite features are eDiscovery and insider risk management, because these are the major threats to an organization that can't be easily traced."
"Purview helped us automate and control our data without having to rely on people to manually tag documents with specific retention periods."

Cons

"I must do two-factor authentication when I sign in from a different location. It creates friction. It's not personalized for the end user. I would like to see specific insights."
"The tool's expensive nature is an area of concern where improvements are required."
"The technical support has room for improvement."
"Purview's data connector platform for non-Microsoft data sources is good, but there is some functionality that hasn't been developed yet. There are some servers that it can't connect to yet, because they're still in a trial process."
"While Microsoft Purview currently allows weekly scans for data sources, this limitation hinders the usefulness of the tool for frequently changing data."
"There are differences when looking at an incident in the M365 portal versus Purview, and the main one is the advanced hunting. In the M365 portal, you can write KQL queries and fetch data. If that was available in Purview, it would be very good."
"Blueprints and landing zones like we have in Azure would be great to see in Purview. The solution could offer a baseline or blueprint of recommended settings for compliance regulations such as GDPR and ISO, which could be applied with a simple switch in the options."
"We have had some issues automating our document management with Power Apps. I haven't been super-disappointed with anything except for Power Apps, which kinda drives me nuts. I think it's because I am a coder who can do things properly, and I keep trying to do things there, but it's not working out the way. The security team is pretty quick. I'm kind of a thorn in their side. I always try to get around stuff. They haven't come to me for anything saying, "Hey, I can't find this information." They're pretty good. Maybe, there's a lack of documentation, but that doesn't seem to be an issue for our team."
"The custom data classification for the African region needs to be improved."
"There are some limitations with regard to the lineage of data from different parts of the system."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"If one is cheap and ten is very expensive, I rate the product price as seven."
"The pricing depends on the client's requirements and the number of applications."
"Microsoft Purview is expensive."
"I would rate the cost of Microsoft Purview a six out of ten with ten being the most expensive."
"While Purview's standard pricing might not be accessible to most small businesses, we were fortunate to benefit from the educational pricing which made it a financially viable option for our needs."
"Purview's price is pretty high when you factor in storage costs."
"The solution is extremely affordable for the K-12 space."
"Microsoft Purview is priced in the middle. It isn't the cheapest, but it isn't the most expensive. It's affordable compared to other public cloud services."
"Some people find the tier licensing system complicated, but it offers a lot of value for money if we use the features."
