We have many Fortinet use cases in Brazil. One particular use case could happen at a high school; they want a new firewall and high availability to their students to access the internet. They want a secure way to connect to the internet. We are proposing FortiGate 200TF.
Solutions Architect at a tech services company with 51-200 employees
Stable and scalable; great web filtering
Pros and Cons
- "It's almost perfect. It's very stable. We don't have many hardware issues."
- "The user interface could be improved."
What is our primary use case?
What is most valuable?
One of the most important features is web filtering. They can block certain types of websites. This is good for in-school security. I believe this is the most important but all of the other filters are also very important, including the antivirus and antispam inspection.
What needs improvement?
The user interface could be improved, but as a firewall, it's the best product we have.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
It's almost perfect. It's very stable. We don't have many hardware issues.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
It is a scalable solution. For example, in one use case, we have 500 students using the solution. Two technicians are managing the solution, which one software person designed. On the customer end, they need a person overseeing the security.
How are customer service and support?
Their tech support is very good. We always get good answers from Fortinet tech support.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
We recommend that the FortiGate logs be analyzed using FortiAnalyzer, which is a Fortinet tool for generating reports. We also advise customers to implement user passwords for all students so they can track which student accessed which website, or which student has been on their email. It's a form of protection for the school. If the school has any issues, they can prove the origin of it.

Chief of Security and Research at a tech services company with 1-10 employees
Easy to configure and manage with good pricing
Pros and Cons
- "It's a very simple solution to manage."
- "Right now, we have two data centers that are a thousand kilometers apart. It would be nice to be able to string them together."
What is our primary use case?
We primarily use it to protect edge devices. We use it as a firewall.
What is most valuable?
It's a very simple solution to manage.
It's quite stable.
The scalability potential is good.
It's an easy solution to configure.
The pricing is pretty good.
What needs improvement?
I'd like for it to be possible to cluster together data centers. Right now, we have two data centers that are a thousand kilometers apart. It would be nice to be able to string them together.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've been using the solution since 2005.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The solution is quite stable and reliable. There are no bugs or glitches. It doesn't crash or freeze.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The product is very scalable. If a company needs to expand it, it can do so.
The entire company ends up using the solution, and we have between 25,000 and 50,000 employees. We have about five offices and in each data center, we use Fortigate.
How are customer service and support?
Occasionally, if the partner cannot resolve the problem, you do have to work with some Fortigate techs. They are excellent and quite helpful.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I am working with Fortinet, Cisco, Palo Alto, and Forcepoint. I am using ASA from Cisco. It's very difficult to manage. Palo Alto is excellent, and the best in the market. Fortigate is right behind them. The central management is great.
How was the initial setup?
While the product is easy to configure, I cannot get into specifics in regards to the initial setup. It's handled by a partner. We pay them to do the setup.
The actual installation process is pretty quick. It might take about half a day or so.
I'd rate the experience of setting up the solution at a five out of five.
There are bout five people that can handle the maintenance of the product across our different data centers. They are all administrators.
What about the implementation team?
Our partner sets up the solution for us.
What was our ROI?
We've seen a decent ROI as it has helped us maintain a good level of security. I'd rate the ROI we've seen at a five out of five.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
We tend to have a three-year contract with Fortigate. While I don't know the exact costs, my understanding is that it is less expensive than some other options.
What other advice do I have?
I'm a customer and an end-user.
We use the on-premises version due to the fact that, in Algeria, we do not use cloud deployments.
I'd advise potential new users that it's a good edge solution, and not necessarily the best for data centers.
I'm very happy with this product and would rate it at a ten out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

A complete solution with great features and good firewall capabilities
Pros and Cons
- "The product can scale."
- "The log settings and filters could use some improvement."
What is our primary use case?
We primarily use the solution for firewall purposes.
What is most valuable?
The firewall capabilities are great.
We like the EPS antivirus.
It's quite a complete solution. The features on offer are good.
We find the solution to be stable.
The product can scale.
What needs improvement?
We occasionally have issues when we are doing firmware updates.
The log settings and filters could use some improvement.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've been using the solution for ten years. It's been about a decade.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The stability is very good. There are no bugs. It's not glitchy. I can't recall it crashing or freezing. It offers pretty good performance.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
We have found the scalability to be very good. If a company needs to expand it, it can do so.
We have about 500 users on the solution right now.
How are customer service and support?
Technical support has been fine. We have no complaints. They are pretty helpful and responsive.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We only use Fortigate. We don't use any other solution.
How was the initial setup?
We only have one person for deployment and maintenance.
It took us only two days to deploy it with our desired configurations.
What about the implementation team?
I am able to set up the solution myself. We did have a reseller who assisted us as well.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
We currently have a three-year licensing agreement. There are standard features and you do not have to pay extra fees for extra add-ons.
What other advice do I have?
We are customers and end-users. We don't have a business relationship with Fortigate.
I would advise potential new users to check the compatibility of the UTM firewall, of the rules of your organization. It's not magic. It's hard work implementing that.
I'd rate the solution at a nine out of ten. We've been pretty happy with its capabilities.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
Public Cloud
If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?
Microsoft Azure

Network Engineer at a tech services company with 11-50 employees
Good security and fair pricing but require knowledge of command line coding
Pros and Cons
- "The pricing of the solution is good."
- "The block, the clarity, the quarantine command, is not very user-friendly. You would have to do everything through the command line and I would have preferred if it wasn't a CLI."
What is our primary use case?
Originally, I used the solution for a graduation project. I'll soon be using it in a new context.
What is most valuable?
My favorite feature that I enjoyed using is the SD-WAN, the application control, the IPS&IDS, and Security Fabric (which I enjoyed the most because of the visibility it offers of your whole Network) .
It's less complicated than other firewalls. FortiGate is less complicated and it's guaranteed. By guarantee I mean better control against the attack surface because no firewall 100% guarantee that you won't be attacked.
With security Fabric, I was able to see everything that was going on. The visibility it provided was excellent.
The pricing of the solution is good.
We've found the solution to be relatively stable.
What needs improvement?
There's this command in the email of service policy that you add for the email of service policy. It's hard to do in reality. It could be made easier.
The block, the clarity, the quarantine command, is not very user-friendly. You would have to do everything through the command line and I would have preferred if it wasn't a CLI.
For how long have I used the solution?
I used it for a few months to a year ago and am beginning to use it again.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
It is stable. In security, we handle shortouts and blackouts. Never in my time have we had a blackout, however, if you lose power, you do lose the whole firewall, which is bad.
How are customer service and technical support?
I've never dealt with technical support. I cannot speak to how helpful or responsive they are.
I have, however, used their tech demonstrations to learn about the product. That's helpful in terms of understanding, however, dealing with support directly has never come up.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
While I typically work with Fortigate, I'm still learning to work with Cisco Firepower.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The pricing is fairly reasonable. Compared to the pricing of other firewalls, it is very good. We have no complaints.
What other advice do I have?
We used to be just a customer, however, it's my understanding that now the company has partnered with Fortinet.
I'd rate the solution at a ten out of ten.
I always recommend Fortigate to other users. It's quite good. As long as you know, or learn the command line, you're probably going to be okay. Any problems we've had have been relatively insignificant in nature. The features, in general, have been so great. It's really been a very good product.

What is most valuable?
The solution offers good documentation.
I'm mostly happy with how the solution performs.
The solution works well for large companies. We use it for our bigger clients.
What needs improvement?
The interface of the solution could be improved. Right now, it's not the best.
In some areas of the solution, it works slowly.

I am currently using the solution. I've been using it for a while now.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We use a variety of different Fortinet solutions.
How was the initial setup?
We deployed the solution locally, to our server.
What other advice do I have?
The solution is FortiGate 60D and FortiGate-VM is FortiOS 5.2.2. I'm not sure which version of the solution we are currently on.
Our company exports this solution to large customers. We're partners with Fortinet.
We have the solution on a local server.
I'd rate the solution at an eight out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

We use it our network, not in the cloud.

IT Specialist at a tech services company with 51-200 employees
Stable, with great technical support and excellent firewall capabilities
Pros and Cons
- "Overall, it's an excellent solution."
- "The key activation is very complicated at times."
What is our primary use case?
You can use the balance of FortiGate for an HTTP server, for example. It's not a total solution like a firewall, however, you have a lot of structure within it for normal firewalls or next-generation firewalls. FortiGate is the firewall for Fortinet.
What is most valuable?
Overall, it's an excellent solution.
The solution is largely very stable.
Technical support has been good.
The firewall capabilities are very good.
What needs improvement?
The key activation is very complicated at times. For example, when you use it for different customers, due to the fact that they are linked with one customer or another, you need an account. Sometimes the customer doesn't have the account, or they confuse the key. It derails the process a bit. It would be ideal if they could simplify or streamline the process.
The internal logs could be easier to manage. When you handle debugging sometimes you have some trouble seeing the whole of a packet that crossed the firewall. Luckily, I have a lot of expertise and therefore can work within these shortcomings. However, it would be easier if there was more visibility.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've used the solution for five years at this point. I've used it for a while.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
It's very stable. I remember only one case in which we had issues with a routing protocol. This was the big problem that I had with FortiGate, as they had some issues and they reduced the equipment. However, in the last five years, it was the one lone situation that I opened a case for and they took a lot of time to get to the solution, which was an SBS and BGP routing protocol into the FortiGate. That said, that issue was on an appliance, not a VM solution.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
One of the primary clients we have that uses the solution is a bank. They utilize it for internal services.
How are customer service and technical support?
The technical support is good. For me, it's a simple process in that you open a case, and, depending on your contract, normally they respond quickly and their help normally is good. I would say I am satisfied with the level of support they offer to clients.
What other advice do I have?
I work with a service provider and he sells service in cloud and FortiGate products, including FortiGate VMs. With this, he sells services, and I work with him on support and initial configurations or deactivations for customers.
I work with various versions of the solution, the latest being 7.7.
We use a variety of deployments, including on-premise and in public clouds. Not an American public cloud, however. Rather, it's a public cloud here in South America.
I'd rate the solution at a ten out of ten. the product is excellent and I am very happy with it overall.
