Great for identifying application interdependencies with helpful support but needs better visualizations
We're just trying to identify the application interdependencies, which normally reside on different servers, including web servers, database servers, enterprise service bus, et cetera, up to your presentation layer before we start moving stuff around. Normally, the reason why we use these tools is to understand what assets we have, where they're deployed, and how they enter and operate before we decide to go move something from point A to point B. The solution is going to allow me to establish a wave or migration plan where you have different waves of migration and then you actually have move groups to try and get your application moved from A to B seamlessly. A to B could be on-premise to on-premise. It could be on-premise to cloud. Et cetera. The solution can tell me what components can I deploy, for example, into a cloud space, without having to refactor my applications since that can be quite time-consuming and costly.

Network monitoring has improved visibility and now detects traffic issues and attacks faster
Kentik can be improved in terms of languages, and visually it could be improved a bit more as well. In this case, by finding a more secure interface, so to speak, or even more customization options so it looks better visually, and also with some space to document the dashboard itself and what it displays. I think it is really more about making it easier for new users and the reports when it comes to suggestions for improving Kentik, besides the ones I have already mentioned. The number eight reflects what was missing for it to be the highest score; it needed to be a bit easier for new users and have slightly more customized reports. Even though Kentik has reports, I think they could be a bit more customized for those who are just starting to use the tool.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"This solution is more applications reference architecture focused. Its benefit is that it specializes in that space."
"The most valuable feature is the way it handles data, from Layer 2 up to Layer 7. We can see everything that happens in the network."
"You cannot hide from the wire; all truth lives in the packets, and ExtraHop gets them to talk!"
"Wire data analytics."
"The most valuable features are security detections, perimeter detection, dashboards, and alerts."
"ExtraHop is far ahead of anything comparable in the industry."
"It's a must-have solution for large IT Operations, providing the ability to analyze infrastructure and application-related performance and data from the wire perspective."
"This is a must-try product."
"The most important feature is cybersecurity."
"We haven't seen anything else that comes even close to Kentik's real-time visibility across our network infrastructure, and we've demo'ed everything under the sun."
"The drill-down into detailed views of network activity helps to quickly pinpoint locations and causes. All the information is there."
"Kentik excels in telemetry within data centers and works well in multi-vendor environments."
"Kentik has had a positive impact on my organization in terms of our network visibility because we leave our dashboard on a display screen, where the entire engineering team can see it."
"In terms of the solution’s real-time visibility across our network infrastructure, I have not been able to find any other monitoring or netflow visualization tool that gives me the kind of information I get from Kentik. If I need to take a deep-dive into something that I see, it's really easy for me to do that. Whereas with most other things, I have to use five or six other tools to get that kind of data, with Kentik, I have it all in one place."
"One of the valuable features is the intuitive nature of building out reports, and then triggering actions based on specific metrics from those reports. It has a really good UI and the ability to surface data through the reporting functions is pretty good. That's helped a lot in the security space."
"Before using the solution, we had to do all these manual tasks, such as running all these queries manually, and building our tech cost-report used to be a two or two-and-a-half-week effort, and using Kentik, and the automation that it provides us, we've brought that down to a day or two, which is a massive time savings."

Cons

"We've had some struggles getting it to see everything that we want to see. Network visibility is something that needs to be improved."
"They either have to go broad or decide what their bread and butter is and get really good at that."
"This solution would be improved if it had the ability to retain data longer."
"We'd like to see a local presence within the region in order to have seamless service whether it's the support, the implementation, or professional services."
"Additional out-of-the-box solutions and use cases would be nice."
"The solution could get more aggressive in the discounting of the overall cost."
"The improvement that would make the most impact would be expanding on the new EXA big data back end."
"I would improve the Rule-Based Access Control (RBAC) by providing granular access control to the data."
"Perhaps a better explanation would be to see how tagging is captured and a method of comparing my tagged interfaces on Kentik’s side."
"I've checked out the V4 version of the interface and it's still a little bit clunky for me to use."
"Sometimes it's difficult to order the dimensions correctly when trying to make Sankey flow diagrams."
"We had faced some issues during an outage and were not able to get the desired results from Kentik tools. It took time to resolve these issues, which is why I give them eight points."
"In recent months, I've noticed that while the industry is trending towards AI, Kentik has room for improvement in this area."
"The product could strive for more improvements to become closer to perfect."
"We asked for a way, regarding the potential networks that exist, to hook Kentik up with external tools like peering DBs to correlate things together and see what we can do... This is all in the [next] beta now."
"Sometimes, the tool has complications, so we must deal with the additional support from the tool's end."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The pricing is higher than other solutions, but with such good features, I think it's worth it."
"The price of this solution for our environment is about £650,000 ($855,000 USD) for three years."
"The pricing is fair considering the value provided."
"The tool is cheaply priced."
"We have an annual contract with Kentik that we renew each year for a set number of licenses. We also have some burstable licenses which we can spin up and spin down, and those are paid as they are used."
