Provides good protection against viruses but support needs improvement
The product's initial setup phase wasn't too bad. The product's installation phase wasn't terrible, but it could have been good to club the things in the process, especially for the ones who are doing it for the first time, and it would be good if Microsoft offered users, someone, to talk to who knows the product. You will be gambling if you use Google for the tool because who knows if it really knows what Microsoft Defender for Business is all about. On a scale of one to ten, if ten is the easiest, I rate the setup phase as an eight out of ten. The setup phase was straightforward. As the tool was needed in a small shop, the solution's deployment was done in a couple of days. The solution was deployed in my company with the help of a small team of ten people. I had my head of IT help me in rolling it out in our company.

Reliable with good independent modules and a straightforward setup
I'd rate the solution seven out of ten. Having used Trend Micro as well, I would rate Trend Micro higher. However, I would still choose this product as a second option. When we recommend a product, we would recommend something based on the fit of the product and customer requirements. We worked with Defender, we worked with Trend Micro, and we worked with McAfee. All of them almost overlap in multiple use cases. That said, we do see the customer IT strategy and where they're going, and they are adopting Azure more. We know there are certain limitations in their landscape where there may be some old legacy systems, and in that case, then we would either switch back to McAfee or Trend Micro instead of Defender.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The interface is quite user-friendly."
"A few things are valuable. One is the alerting we see when any kind of intrusion is happening, any kind of malware is being deployed across the endpoints, or any kind of suspicious activity is going on. We have a footprint across all of North America, Canada, and Mexico, so we want to make sure that all our endpoints are protected and we are able to look for any anomalous activity."
"The security features are valuable because they come with more capabilities that other licenses do not have, including the enterprise license like E3."
"The solution is effective, continuously improving, and highly regarded, especially with Microsoft's leadership in the industry."
"The solution includes attack-savvy service and risk protection, part of data center management, and offers an effective single-dashboard view with Microsoft 365."
"If you're an Intune user, you can bring in certain capabilities like system-hardening policies, which further enhances the security."
"The most valuable feature of the solution is its central console."
"The solution provides good scalability."
"It's very stable and reliable."
"The performance is good."
"The stability has been great."
"The investigation and forensic analysis have been most helpful."
"We have a cloud-based instance, so we can deploy all our configurations through the cloud. That's the beauty of FireEye."
"The exploit guard and malware protection features are very useful. The logon tracker feature is also very useful. They have also given new modules such as logout backup, process backup. We ordered these modules from the FireEye market place, and we have installed these modules. We are currently exploring these features."
"It is very valuable in finding out unknown malware."
"Technical support is excellent."

Cons

"The security could always be improved."
"Defender's reporting is rather scattered, and its URL filtering mechanism doesn't really work."
"The solution's AI is notorious for false positives, and the time you have to spend training it is ridiculous."
"It is not quick to make exclusions or specific configurations compared to other antiviruses on the market."
"Defender's threat protection should be fine-tuned to reduce false positives. It could be more targeted, reflecting a continuous evolution in detecting. Also, it could be easier to integrate into other environments."
"We faced some issues while running some applications on Mac."
"Talking with the tool's technician about any problem is very complicated."
"Customer service is not bad, yet not great either, and I would rate it maybe five or six out of ten."
"The solution lacks device control."
"The way that signatures work when using this solution could be improved. They could be more user friendly. We would like the ability to select a client's signature from a menu or file share to save time."
"The central monitoring dashboard needs improvement."
"It is a bit technical. The user interface has some significant limitations, mainly when using HIPS on the server side, to protect files from being changed or deleted by hackers, users, or administrators."
"The initial setup can be a bit complicated for those unfamiliar with the product."
"Looking at the current ePolicy orchestrator, and the transition of most vendors to the cloud, they need to do an improvement with the current dashboard or the overall aesthetic of their GUI."
"If you have another endpoint product running on the same machine, you have to fine tune functions from FireEye to avoid performance and user experience issues."
"One suggestion is they should reduce the constant notifications. Whenever I open my laptop, there are too many notifications from McAfee, and it gets annoying."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Since we're a nonprofit, we get pretty good discounts on the tool."
"The tool's cost has been a little high, but I do not think it was terrible."
"Defender for Business is included by default with an Office 365 premium subscription."
"The tool is cheap, while some other solutions are more expensive. I remember the tool cost about five euros for a workstation or for a user on a monthly basis."
"It has to get more competitive because we are starting to see some of the competitors providing better pricing, and some of it, of course, is to gain market share. The Defender product pricing is probably a little higher than the competitors."
"MVISION is intended as an enterprise product and it is priced like one. This solution is within the price range of competitors at the enterprise level."
"It is based on an annual subscription."
"Customers would need to purchase a license. If a customer purchases an MVISION Endpoint license, he may use that license to install ENS. It's a flexible license where you have the option to either use the McAfee security software or the Windows Defender managed by McAfee, which is MVISION Endpoint."
"The pricing is reasonable."
"Licensing fees are paid yearly."
"I don't think there are any extra expenses besides its licensing costs."
"Licensing fees are billed on a yearly basis."
"The price of the product is similar to the ones in the market that offer the same features."
