Enables seamless integration with multiple systems
I would rate the scalability a seven out of ten. It's not much more dynamic, not as dynamic as you may think, like seeing it in the cloud. In order to use it, you need to have the download servers and then scale up your systems. Oracle SOA Suites serves as a middle layer between applications. For example, let's say you have SAP, and we have Salesforce or Oracle ERP system. Users connect to those systems and perform certain activities or transactions on the applications. Now, if any data needs to be synchronized or any integration needs to happen between these applications, we use the Oracle SOA Suite. It acts as the bridge between the applications, not between the users. It's like having endpoints between the applications. Currently, we have 20 endpoints; 20 systems are connected to it, which is great. Oracle SOA Suite is being used daily. We are using it to its maximum potential.

Efficiently monitor networks across regions with seamless setup and robust feature set
PRTG Network Monitor is easy to set up. Within a few minutes, it is operational. It is an all-in-one monitoring solution without extra costs. For example, we set it up for an insurance company with branches across Africa. We are able to monitor from Lagos without installing anything in the branches, using the agentless feature. We just put in the IP address and the parameter, and we monitor from those ends. Additionally, all the sensors are very useful. Most people are interested in the bandwidth monitoring sensor to see what bandwidth the users are consuming. The pricing is affordable compared to SolarWinds.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The integration with various products."
"The ability to stand up a highly available SOA Suite, which has full DR capabilities, in a remote center and synchronize the databases using Data Guard."
"The stability of the solution is the most valuable feature."
"The solution's XSLT or XSL Transformation feature was very useful."
"Middleware jobs developing for EC, ERP, and shipping systems become easier."
"In case there is something that doesn't work out of the box, you have the flexibility to customize it."
"The most valuable feature of the facility, as the partner link, is to try to use third-party services and logic in your own vehicle to orchestrate the information."
"This is one of the critical products for my company and we use it extensively. We currently use each and every feature of Oracle SOA."
"The most valuable feature of PRTG Network Monitor is the different monitoring probes available."
"Technical support has been very helpful so far."
"It is easy to use and intuitive, which is really important. It does what it says on the box by giving you a visual of the state of what is going on at any one time."
"The best feature is that it lets me know what is going on. I need to know if something has gone down, I need to know if something is running very slowly. PRTG tells me that."
"The scalability is good. You can improve a remote host or the clustering. This gives it the flexibility to monitor another infrastructure remotely."
"The most valuable feature is the ability to span multiple technologies and multiple vendors."
"PRTG Network Monitor is a very stable product."
"PRTG is integrated on Windows."

Cons

"The solution’s initial setup is complex and could be improved."
"Another area of improvement is performance. Because with multiple solutions connecting to the SOA platform, the performance of the SOA platform can be affected in time. So, that could be one area that could be improved with the SOA."
"Other solutions might be better componets such as Salesforce."
"The installation and adjustment process seems too complex."
"An area for improvement in Oracle SOA Suite is the cost. It could be lower."
"It's also not developer-friendly."
"The deployment could be made easier by including add-ons like Hudson and Maven."
"They supply lots of documentation but finding what we need is challenging at times."
"PRTG does not allow us to scan devices like we can scan software or another problem in it. Also, I cannot draw graphical graphs in Woodview/look. Another problem is that we cannot draw a good diagram in PRTG."
"I would like to see Office 365 monitoring. Essentially, it doesn't do it. I assumed not at all, but apparently it does it slightly. However, due to issues with APIs, they currently don't provide full monitoring for O365."
"A room for improvement in PRTG Network Monitor is its sensors. Its application technology sensor, such as the IAS, .NET, etc., needs some improvement because it doesn't work as expected. For example, the IAS sensor doesn't give immediate information, and the information you get from it isn't of good value. The web GUI of PRTG Network Monitor also needs improvement because errors keep popping up if it's not been updated to the latest version. What I'd like to see in the next release of the tool is end-to-end topology mapping for the business model, and that should be required. There has to be a technical map. Technical mapping and topological creation are missing in PRTG Network Monitor, so I would like to see those in the future."
"PRTG Network Monitor can improve by having better integration with devices."
"I would like to see more updates available in this solution."
"When you email the support team, they take three to seven days to respond and resolve simple issues."
"PRTG Network Monitor should improve the NetFlow dashboard, there is no flexibility, and the NetFlow is not meeting the business needs. Additionally, they are missing part of the configuration management."
"The solution has to evolve as an end-to-end monitoring solution. It has to do better at understanding the application at the deepest level."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"This product is WebLogic based, hence it can be both resource hungry as well as expensive from a licensing point of view."
"The pricing is not very high as compared to its competitors."
"Oracle pricing is expensive. Support is based on your license. AWS is much better than Oracle in this regard."
"Based on my knowledge, Oracle SOA Suite doesn't have user-based licensing. It has a system-based licensing model, so you pay for whole systems. Oracle SOA Suite is an expensive solution, so it's a four out of ten for me."
"The product is moderately priced."
"Oracle SOA Suite is an expensive solution."
"It is necessary to evaluate the requirement regarding the platform usage and what the main operation area of the platform will be."
"Sensors on free version can run out quick."
"We have an unlimited license for this solution."
"Because we are only on the free version, we have a limited number of sensors. Therefore, we are not monitoring as much as we want to be to obtain historical information."
"I would like better pricing models for smaller businesses. The free version is fantastic, but it's too restrictive. If they could just get up to 200 sensors for a reasonable fee for on-premise, I would give PRTG my credit card right now."
"If you are not too sure about it, try the free version. Then, if you like it, you can go to the paid version and roll it out."
"I rate the licensing for PRTG Network Monitor an eight out of ten."
"The pricing is comparable."
"There is a license to use PRTG Network Monitor and it is annually."

Nagios vs. Zabbix vs. PRTG vs. Spiceworks vs. Solarwinds Network Performance Monitor
I have researched a quite a few network monitoring tools which can be used for various monitoring purposes of not only the servers, but the intermediate routers as well. There are majorly three types of these softwares. Ones which are completely open-source, you can do almost anything you want…

PRTG is quite basic for this type of application monitoring, it'll give you some general metrics but what you're asking for is better done with Nagios, though its architecture and the information it provides won't give you the best metrics either. In this case your safest bet would be Zabbix, although both Nagios and Zabbix will steal a lot of your time until you can tune them to the detail lev...

PRTG is a network monitoring tool that uses SNMP protocol. You can configure weblogic server to use SNMP protocol to communicate with PRTG using agents. The same thing for Oracle ESB, by enabling SNMP traps in the Oracle Servcie bus. I think your business requirement as well as budget, will determine which monitoring tool you can use. I think all network monitoring tools, using SNMP traps, can do the job. Any SW or applications can build an SNMP traps to communicate with the monitoring tool. You can consult Oracle's manuals for more details. I hope this will be helpful. All the best, Ashraf Galal

Hi, I've no experience with PRTG, but you can find that on their site: http://www.paessler.com/oracle_monitoring I used to practice some time ago Nagios, on Linux boxes with web Logic, and it adapted well to our needs. I'm no longer experimenting with supervision tools as i switched to backup and storage. Regards E.Boutang
