Provides good performance and error handling, but its initial setup is complex and could be improved
We use Oracle SOA Suite for application integration in our company. We were using the on-premises version of the product. Since Oracle SOA Suite has its own engine, you can build your integrations, deploy, and use them. We used the Oracle BPEL Process Manager for Orchestration when we had a lot of business logic. Oracle Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) and Oracle VPN come under the Oracle SOA integration platform. Compared to other solutions like SnapLogic, Oracle SOA Suite is not easy to use. Oracle SOA Suite is suitable for customers with a big complex integration process, where performance and infrastructure stability are more important. Overall, I rate the solution a seven out of ten.

Detects suden changes but significant pricing concerns affect the effectiveness of network traffic troubleshooting
We use PRTG Network Monitor for monitoring traffic on interfaces and the behavior of network traffic. If there are sudden changes in traffic or any configuration issues, we can sort them out using PRTG. It's very helpful for troubleshooting and monitoring traffic utilization on our interfaces…

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Valuable features include connectors and BAM."
"It performs better in real-time transactions."
"We were able to scale out using multiple application and web servers balanced by hardware load balancers and Weblogic clustering."
"What I like best about Oracle SOA Suite is Oracle support. I also like the tool features, especially the integration feature."
"The most valuable feature of Oracle SOA Suite is all the platform's capabilities."
"The product provides transparency in finances."
"The product allows you to visualize how a company is working currently by providing rich possibilities for analysis such as the audit trails and therefore shows where improvements might be valuable."
"The stability of the solution is the most valuable feature."
"Accessibility, ease of use (Web GUI, MobileApps). In general, compared with other software"
"It is pretty simple to use, which is always a good thing. It's been very reliable in updating us if any issues crop up."
"The most valuable feature of PRTG Network Monitor is real-time monitoring."
"The sensors and remote probes are phenomenal. We use them for all of our global sites. The problem with our global sites are that they are all VPNs. If the link goes down, you can't monitor other solutions, as it just goes off the grid. Having remote probes allows them to still carry on and get the information that we need when it comes back up, sending the information to us."
"PRTG is simple to manage. First, you can create a template for a device, then apply it to hundreds of similar devices. That's a great advantage."
"It is nice to have one place where all the information is right there in front of us."
"PRTG Network Monitor's best features are its flexibility, ease of implementation, user-friendliness, and intuitive interfaces."
"The feature whereby it shows when my hard drives are moving towards thresholds that would be considered outages, before they reach that point - that is valuable."

Cons

"The Maven integration in JDeveloper is very basic and might be enhanced to allow the proper use of Maven."
"The solutions can improve the communication or translations between formats, such as JSON and XML. The JSON REST API could improve."
"The product is not user-friendly."
"Various parts of SOA, BPEL, and so on, each have their own consoles which need to be accessed individually with different logins. It would be better from an admin perspective if all the consoles were accessible via a single login."
"The technical support is good, we have premier support which costs extra."
"The deployment could be made easier by including add-ons like Hudson and Maven."
"SOA, OSB, SOA Cloud Service."
"The web services need to be more robust."
"We would like more cloud native sensors for AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, etc. A lot of businesses are moving in that direction, so having something where we can pull performance stats out of these cloud services would be great for us."
"More training videos for installing and configuring this software would have been nice, especially when working with a lot of devices."
"While the desktop app is good, they could slightly improve it. We would like it to be a single pane of glass. At the moment, you can only see certain portions of information. You have to scroll through to make it more granular. We want them to develop the desktop app to be more user-friendly."
"The automation should be improved."
"The solution has to evolve as an end-to-end monitoring solution. It has to do better at understanding the application at the deepest level."
"It probably has this already, but if it had a mobile app that would be helpful. For example, on a day like today when I'm out, if I could just fire it up and see green, green, green, green, green or red, that would be good."
"I would like to see Office 365 monitoring. Essentially, it doesn't do it. I assumed not at all, but apparently it does it slightly. However, due to issues with APIs, they currently don't provide full monitoring for O365."
"It would be nice if it gave us alerts via Gmail or SMS message."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Oracle pricing is expensive. Support is based on your license. AWS is much better than Oracle in this regard."
"Based on my knowledge, Oracle SOA Suite doesn't have user-based licensing. It has a system-based licensing model, so you pay for whole systems. Oracle SOA Suite is an expensive solution, so it's a four out of ten for me."
"The pricing is not very high as compared to its competitors."
"The product is moderately priced."
"This product is WebLogic based, hence it can be both resource hungry as well as expensive from a licensing point of view."
"It is necessary to evaluate the requirement regarding the platform usage and what the main operation area of the platform will be."
"Oracle SOA Suite is an expensive solution."
"We have unlimited devices and sensors, and it is a bit pricey, but we do have unlimited sensors. With all things considered the price is fine, related to the solution itself. PRTG Network Monitor is good value for money."
"The pricing is okay and it is cheaper than some competing products."
"The scalability is there, but smaller companies might need CAM software to be able afford the product."
"The pricing for PRTG in our case is reasonable because we have a lot of applications to monitor within PRTG. It is not that expensive."
"PRTG Network Monitor is very expensive."
"PRTG is now available as PRTG Enterprise Monitor, and the price varies depending on the total number of sensors the customer buys"
"Because we are only on the free version, we have a limited number of sensors. Therefore, we are not monitoring as much as we want to be to obtain historical information."
"Cost was a factor when selecting this solution, but it just did everything we wanted it to do."

Nagios vs. Zabbix vs. PRTG vs. Spiceworks vs. Solarwinds Network Performance Monitor

PRTG is quite basic for this type of application monitoring, it'll give you some general metrics but what you're asking for is better done with Nagios, though its architecture and the information it provides won't give you the best metrics either. In this case your safest bet would be Zabbix, although both Nagios and Zabbix will steal a lot of your time until you can tune them to the detail lev...

PRTG is a network monitoring tool that uses SNMP protocol. You can configure weblogic server to use SNMP protocol to communicate with PRTG using agents. The same thing for Oracle ESB, by enabling SNMP traps in the Oracle Servcie bus. I think your business requirement as well as budget, will determine which monitoring tool you can use. I think all network monitoring tools, using SNMP traps, can do the job. Any SW or applications can build an SNMP traps to communicate with the monitoring tool. You can consult Oracle's manuals for more details. I hope this will be helpful. All the best, Ashraf Galal

Hi, I've no experience with PRTG, but you can find that on their site: http://www.paessler.com/oracle_monitoring I used to practice some time ago Nagios, on Linux boxes with web Logic, and it adapted well to our needs. I'm no longer experimenting with supervision tools as i switched to backup and storage. Regards E.Boutang
