For how long have I used the solution?
I have worked with FortiGate products for maybe ten years and with the cloud version for one year.
How are customer service and support?
The technical support is not very good. It suffers from overall competence issues and a lack of language proficiency.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Neutral
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I have tried Azure Firewall. It is extremely overpriced and does not have all the management features FortiGate has. I have dealt with other competitors in the past and am now focusing just on Fortinet Security Solutions.
In the past, I have worked with Cisco, Juniper, Palo Alto and am currently focused on Fortinet.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup was difficult due to differences in handling network management between Azure and on-premises solutions.
What about the implementation team?
I deployed it myself, but I had some colleagues I could ask questions.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The pricing is on par with other cloud providers. FortiGate Cloud is priced similarly to other providers, however, we still need FortiManager and FortiAnalyzer.
What other advice do I have?
Fortinet products are just as good as any other competitor, with better management capabilities. It is easier to set up a Fortinet solution than Cisco, Juniper, or Palo Alto.
I'd rate the solution eight out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
Hybrid Cloud
If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?
Microsoft Azure

Provides log retention for up to one year and helps with reporting
Pros and Cons
- "The solution's most valuable feature is log reporting. It has a wide range of products for small, medium, and enterprise customers. The tool is very user-friendly and straightforward, which sets them apart from other vendors. It also has good integration with other solutions."
- "Fortinet FortiGate Cloud's customization is very limited."
What is our primary use case?
We use Fortinet FortiGate Cloud for log retention and reporting.
What is most valuable?
The solution's most valuable feature is log reporting. It has a wide range of products for small, medium, and enterprise customers. The tool is very user-friendly and straightforward, which sets them apart from other vendors. It also has good integration with other solutions.
What needs improvement?
Fortinet FortiGate Cloud's customization is very limited.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been working with the product for more than five years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
I rate the solution's scalability an eight out of ten.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Fortinet FortiGate Cloud is scalable and can offer log retention for up to one year. I rate its scalability a ten out of ten. My company has 1000 firewalls, of which 50 percent use Fortinet FortiGate Cloud.
How are customer service and support?
The tool's response time is slow.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Neutral
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I worked with SonicWall and Sophos.
How was the initial setup?
Fortinet FortiGate Cloud is easy to deploy. You need to log in to set it up. It can be completed in a few minutes. We have around 20 engineers involved in its deployment.
What was our ROI?
The tool offers cost savings. Normally, a separate solution for these requirements would require a big budget. However, the solution is very affordable and achievable for most companies.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Fortinet FortiGate Cloud is a cost-effective solution. I rate its pricing a six out of ten. Pricing depends on the firewall model. If the firewall model's pricing is high, the solution's pricing also increases.
What other advice do I have?
Since it's a cloud service, analyzing logs and reporting through the cloud is very efficient. There's also the option to view logs from the firewall itself. If the internet bandwidth is slow, there might be difficulties because the logs are retrieved from the cloud and displayed on the firewall. In such scenarios, there can be some issues.
I rate the overall solution a nine out of ten.

Helps manage firewalls, access points, and other devices with push configurations
Pros and Cons
- "The solution responds more quickly to attacks or issues in the field."
- "There could be more network-related information like interpretation response. All the flows are limited and related to devices, certificates, and switches."
What is our primary use case?
We use the solution to manage FortiGate firewalls, access points, and other devices. This tenant allows configurations to be pushed to all devices and provides cybersecurity to monitor security activity.
How has it helped my organization?
The solution responds more quickly to attacks or issues in the field.
What is most valuable?
The solution allows you to see and manage all the devices from one place. You could connect all the switches and access points. From a security point of view, it protects end devices from vulnerabilities.
What needs improvement?
There could be more network-related information like interpretation response. All the flows are limited and related to devices, certificates, and switches.
An additional feature also provides more possibilities for integrating third-party solutions. If you use integration with FortiGate for cybersecurity, you will have visibility for all devices, endpoints, employee computers, and laptops.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using Fortinet FortiGate Cloud as a partner for four to five years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
There haven't been any problems.
I rate the solution's stability a nine out of ten.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The solution is very scalable. It's very easy to add new devices and push the configuration templates, and it is very easy to manage.
600 users are using this solution.
I rate the solution's scalability an eight out of ten.
How are customer service and support?
Customer support is very helpful. We have a separate support team.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The product is affordable.
What other advice do I have?
We have two administrators for the maintenance.
I recommended the solution to small and medium businesses. It depends on the services and the devices the company has. When you buy the FortiGate switches, adding them to the cloud service is very easy. You don't need any agents, but if you have FortiClient, you need to deploy agent installations on employees' computers to conduct this cybersecurity review.
Overall, I rate the solution an eight out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
Public Cloud

Great dashboards, user-friendly, and offer good reporting
Pros and Cons
- "It's user-friendly."
- "I would like to see Wi-Fi management inside the firewall."
What is our primary use case?
We use the solution for security purposes. We have an ISP. We connect the internet through the firewalls, and then we connect each firewall with the VPN to have on our network. We provide access for the students to the firewall.
What is most valuable?
It’s a good product overall. I have no problem with the service, with the defense, with management. All aspects of the product are pretty great.
It's user-friendly. I like the dashboard. I like the reports, and I like to download some data to help to analyze what's going on.
What needs improvement?
I don’t like the licensing. It’s grown too expensive, and we are considering leaving the service over as the price increases.
I would like to see Wi-Fi management inside the firewall.
For how long have I used the solution?
I’ve used the solution for three years and other general Fortigate products for nine years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The solution is very stable. There are no bugs or glitches, and it doesn’t crash or freeze.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The product can scale as needed.
We have around 3,000 users on the solution.
How are customer service and support?
Technical support is good. We receive support from the ISP.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup was kind of difficult. We didn't do it. The company, our ISP, installed them and configured them initially.
It took two days to deploy everything.
We handle the maintenance. We establish the policy, and then only if we find something to fix, do we change that. If not, we don't touch that. We have four people capable of maintenance activities, one engineer, and three specialists.
What about the implementation team?
We had our ISP handle the implementation originally.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The way they set up the licensing could be better. I don’t like how it is right now. It’s expensive.
We pay around $19,000 a year and do not pay for extra technical support.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
We are looking into something new currently. The decision is not technical at all. I know this equipment is great. I like it. However, the licenses went up in cost for no reason. It's the same model. We are analyzing the Firebox M-Box 349, pfSense, et cetera.
What other advice do I have?
I’m an end-user.
I’m not using the latest version. I’m in the middle of deciding if we will continue to use the product or change it out for something new.
I recommend the solution. I have had a great experience. It's not difficult to learn. The reporting and dashboards are good. I have a model that is medium sized, the FG 300D. However, I reviewed the other models, and they looked great too. It’s really just the price for us.
I’d rate the solution nine out of ten.

A very stable and reliable solution for creating VPN tunnels
Pros and Cons
- "The solution includes a very stable VPN and IPS."
- "The solution should include a commit button that allows for review of changes and deployments before they are submitted."
What is our primary use case?
Our company uses the solution for site-to-site VPN tunnels.
We have more than 6,000 users and four administrators who monitor the solution.
What is most valuable?
The solution includes a very stable VPN and IPS.
The solution's documentation is good.
What needs improvement?
The solution should include a commit button that allows for review of changes and deployments before they are submitted. Any actions are immediately reflected but it would be better if a review-before-commit option existed like with Palo Alto.
The solution could enhance its firewall reporting without the need for a sister product such as Analyzer.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using the solution for four years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The solution is very stable.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The solution is scalable and we intend to expand its use.

Technical Head at MICROLOGIC NETWORKS PRIVATE LIMITED
Provides great intel, and is easy to manage, but SSL visibility could be better
Pros and Cons
- "The intel we get from Fortinet is its most valuable aspect."
- "The SSL visibility could be better."
What is our primary use case?
The FortiCloud is being used as a security fabric. It provides insights into the overall activity at the locations which we have deployed. We are in around 30 to 40 locations which we manage over a cloud. Managing is very simple via Fortinet, which really is a value-add to our technology - at least, the infrastructure portion, the management part.
How has it helped my organization?
If you compare the manageability part with Palo Alto, the access via the GUI is very fast in Fortinet, as compared to Palo Alto. In Palo Alto, when saving any configuration, it takes two to three minutes of time while committing the configuration. In Fortinet, it is just a click and it just gets saved.
What is most valuable?
The intel we get from Fortinet is its most valuable aspect.
What needs improvement?
The solution could add load balancing and QS features at an application level. In Fortinet, they don't have application-level visibility as we have in Palo Alto. That is something Fortinet can improve on, the application-level visibility.
The SSL visibility could be better. The content which is encrypted, if they can add an encryption engine, which can check the traffic of SCTPS and do the analysis and the threat filtering, or the URL filtering, in the content, that would be ideal. That way, we don't have to purchase another separate product, like Content Peeper, or other products that do dedicated SSL filtering.
I'd like application-side reporting, for example, who are the top 10 users, what users are using what.
In terms of the complexity, if they integrate and give the track-to reporting to management, that will be a great feature for a future release.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The scalability depends on the sizing. You need to ask: who is the system engineer who is sizing for the customer? For example, if you are the customer and you have a 50 user setup, and the system engineer is proposing a 30E, that may not be a good or an ideal model for 50 users. A 40F would likely be better, as, when we enable UTM, it will enable all the functionality and all the engines will get started, and it will get used. The CPU processing will get distributed among all the services, and then performance may be spread across as well. That's why, while doing the sizing, I would suggest that any system engineer sizes a little bit on the higher side so that, even if the user count goes up, or if the customer plans for scaling, then that won't be a challenge for near future.
For us, the majority of the customers are on Fortinet. A majority of the other customers are on Sophos, and a few customers are on Palo Alto. Most of the enterprise customers are on Palo Alto. Most of the SMB customers are on Fortinet.
How are customer service and support?
The support is quite good. It depends upon the scope. If it's something implementation-based, they won't entertain you. However, if the issue is critical, then they will definitely help. Support is good. Fortinet has good support for India. I have no complaints.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We're also familiar with Palo Alto and Check Point. It's easier to manage or configure, as compared to Palo Alto or Check Point.
How was the initial setup?
The deployment depends upon the requirements. Generally, if there is a standalone infrastructure, and someone wants to configure Fortinet, then it shouldn't take more than one day. However, if you have multi-locations, there might be multiple dependencies or local issues and other stuff, and the configurations may be different. There may be some pools that need to get access from this to that. That might take a few more days. That said, from an implementation aspect, Fortinet implementation is much easier as compared to Palo Alto.
How many people you need for maintenance depends on the nature of the business. For example, in banking, you need 24/7 uptime. You need at least one engineer in a shift to manage the Fortinet devices. Otherwise, two engineers are enough - one for deployment, and the same person can also manage the firewall. Therefore, one to two engineers are more than enough to manage firewalls, Fortinet, the traffic, and to do whitelisting, blacklisting, et cetera. They can do the troubleshooting part and open the ports according to the application requirements.
What about the implementation team?
It is better to have a partner who knows the best practices in order to deploy everything properly. You need someone who can do the staging part, who can do the configuration part, who understands the basic things as well as be able to handle more difficult use cases. It is better to take a help of a partner or integrator.
What was our ROI?
I've definitely seen an ROI.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
In terms of pricing, if it is a cloud subscription, then I prefer to go with the yearly subscription - if you don't have to scale much. However, when you're planning for on-prem devices, then you should go for a three-year license.
There's extra pricing for the UTM and the hardware cost. For a UTM license, they charge an extra fee.
What other advice do I have?
We're using the latest version of the solution.
I'd rate the solution at a seven out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
