Allows you to deploy analytical and security applications.

What is most valuable?

I really value that MicroStrategy is a complete suite built to enable organizations to quickly deploy sophisticated analytical and security applications. It has a very good balance between features, usability, and pricing options.

How has it helped my organization?

It enables you to build decision support systems. MicroStrategy has improved the decision-making process through Enterprise Reports with automated and corporate information management.

What needs improvement?

Analysis self-service could be improved.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have used this product for six years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I did not encounter any stability issues. There were just some minor bugs that were fixed by the manufacturer in their regular patches.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I did not encounter any scalability issues. This is one of its strengths.

How is customer service and technical support?

Technical support was good.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was straightforward and very easy.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

If you really need these features, it is an excellent product with a very good price. Sometimes you do not need much functionality and then other alternatives at a lower price might be a better option.

In our company, we help our clients identify the option that best suits their needs. We then develop/implement the data warehouse, ETL process, data integration, and visualizations.

What other advice do I have?

Keep in mind your global and corporate design. It is best to start with a specific, small, and well-defined area.

It allows you to export a single report in a dashboard.

Valuable Features:

  1. Synchronized drilling
  2. Custom display forms for selectors
  3. Export a single report in a dashboard
  4. Dynamic metric alias
  5. Filter panel

Improvements to My Organization:

I think it shall be very helpful if the future versions allow much more customization following a simpler procedure

Room for Improvement:

I think it would be very helpful if the future versions allow much more customization and simplify this procedure.

Deployment Issues:

The customisation was difficult.

Stability Issues:

There was no issue with the stability.

Scalability Issues:

There was no issue with the scalability.

Other Advice:

My advice would be that it's a great product especially for reporting but you should also keep in mind that in the end it is still a product and it can't replicate all that can be achieved through a code or a full fledged database.

Low TCO and flexible. But licensing model is complicated.

Valuable Features:

I think the total cost of ownership is lower than other products, it is flexible and enterprise class.

Room for Improvement:

The licenses model is complicated. New features are slow to get to market (in comparison to other niche tools).

Licensing for on premise might be a bit complicated - agree. Cloud options looks much easier as they are different than the on premise ones. But the features and flexibility that you get with the product are really great !!

Scalable and integration-friendly
Pros and Cons
  • "It is scalable and integration-friendly."
  • "MicroStrategy should become more user friendly. It should behave more like Tableau."

What is our primary use case?

Our primary use case for MicroStrategy is reporting, including sales, marketing, operational, and financial. We use it for all of our lines of business.

What is most valuable?

The tool I find the most valuable is MicroStrategy Architect. I use it for schematic modeling. It is scalable and integration-friendly.

What needs improvement?

MicroStrategy should become more user friendly. It should behave more like Tableau.

I would personally like to see more narrowcast features.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using MicroStrategy for six years.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was complex because of the nature of the product. It has multiple components. It takes 12 hours to deploy.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

Reporting, dashboards, and new visualization functions help us realize opportunities
Pros and Cons
  • "The reporting, the dashboards, and the new visualization functions. It is very easy for users to understand their data and dashboards."
  • "We haven't invested in the mobile platform. We want to invest, but the problem is the security. We are in the health domain, so we have PHI data."

What is our primary use case?

We have insurance customers, health customers, in our organization. The performance is good.

How has it helped my organization?

The reporting, the dashboards, and the new visualization functions. It is very easy for users to understand their data and dashboards. The dashboards which we are using in our enterprise, they're very helpful in realizing business opportunities for us.

What is most valuable?

The Dossier functionality. We are on 10.4, but we have a sandbox for 10.10 and we are planning to upgrade to 10.10 next week.

We are planning to roll out self-service to business teams, but we are still working on that. We want to deploy a self-service solution to them but we have not done so yet.

For 2018, we want to use Dossier and visualizations. We have a new Vitara visualization chart. We are now planning to buy Vitara visualizations and we'll be using that.

What needs improvement?

I can't think of anything at the moment.

For how long have I used the solution?

More than five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Enterprise is very stable. I've been with MicroStrategy from more than 12 years. The performance and the stability has been increasing. It is the best solution for enterprise BI platform.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We haven't faced the issue of scalability.

How are customer service and technical support?

I like them. They have very good technical support.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We were using SSRS and we converted that, and SAS as well.

We switched because it is a stable platform and we know the good features in MicroStrategy. We have moved more and more of the reporting solutions to MicroStrategy. We still have some SSRS reports, but by the end of this year we are planning to move everything to MicroStrategy.

How was the initial setup?

It is straightforward because I have been working with it for 12 years. So it's easy for me.

Maybe for newcomers it might be a little bit difficult, but they can easily see release notes or get some technical support. They can easily implement the solution. It's not that tough.

What other advice do I have?

In terms of having the analytic capabilities in a single platform, like MicroStrategy, versus a many-points solution, we are planning to use it like that. We had different reporting solutions, but we are moving everything to a single MicroStrategy BI platform.

We haven't invested in the mobile platform. We want to invest, but the problem is the security. We are in the health domain, so we have PHI data. We have some challenges, so most probably this later year or at the start of 2019 we may be able to get the mobile solution.

When choosing a vendor, the major thing I look for is the technical support; how reachable they are. And stability as well.

I definitely recommend MicroStrategy. Install MicroStrategy and use it for reporting, the dashboards, and self-service. You can use it as a centralized BI platform.

It is scalable. It is not a bottleneck for leveraging a high-capacity analytical database.

What is most valuable?

Highly scalable: It is not a bottleneck for leveraging a high-capacity analytical database.

How has it helped my organization?

Users can now consolidate data from across the business without reaching boundaries of cubes.

What needs improvement?

Even though self-service capabilities have been greatly improved, the basic reporting layout is still behind similar products.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have used it for 18 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We have only encountered minor issues from time to time.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Scalability is excellent.

How are customer service and technical support?

Technical support has been similar to other vendors.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We have not previously used a different solution.

How was the initial setup?

There is a lot of setup to perform, so initial training is important.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Consider CPU-based licenses, if you have a large user population with highly varying reporting needs.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I do not recall whether we evaluated other options before choosing this solution.

What other advice do I have?

The core of your data source (data warehouse) should be star schema, preferably starflake. Then you can attach other data sources around that.
