Enhancing secure access with single sign-on and multi-factor authentication
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable functions are Single Sign-On (SSO) and Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)."
  • "Okta could improve by making their learning materials more user-friendly."

What is our primary use case?

As an Okta Identity engineer, I implement Okta for different clients such as banks, telecoms, and insurance companies. These companies need an IAM solution to manage their employees securely and provide them with access to the right applications. Okta is used to automate provisioning and support any errors encountered during and after deployment.

Companies use Okta Workforce Identity to manage their employees' secure access to applications and to minimize the effort required by IT teams to manage identities. The solution helps organizations allow their employees to log into their applications without re-entering credentials and securely access their applications via MFA.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable functions are Single Sign-On (SSO) and Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA). These two modules serve as dual components, essential for securing application access for employees.

What needs improvement?

Okta could improve by making their learning materials more user-friendly. They could also enhance the flexibility of their MFA feature, allowing clients to implement preferred MFA methods without restrictions.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been handling Okta Workforce Identity for five years now.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

There might be occasional glitches or bugs that need improvement, so I would rate its stability as eight out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Okta scores a nine out of ten for scalability.

How are customer service and support?

Okta support is efficient, actively responding on time. They deserve a rating of eight out of ten for their technical support.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I handle CyberArk IAM solutions alongside Okta. I find Okta to be more user-friendly and flexible than CyberArk, especially regarding MFA and SSO features.

How was the initial setup?

The setup process for Okta is relatively straightforward and not overly complex.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Okta is one of the more expensive IAM solutions, and I would rate it an eight regarding cost.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

The main competitor to Okta Workforce Identity is CyberArk Identity.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend Okta Workforce Identity to other users.

I'd rate the solution nine out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Public Cloud

If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?

Other

The Multi-Factor Authentication capability lets you address one of the biggest challenges around security, to make it hard for adversaries to get into your systems.

What is our primary use case?

  • Supporting SaaS implementations from corporate login.
  • I'm a consultant and have worked with Okta at two clients. Both had started to leverage Okta for single sign-on to SaaS services and internal systems. One was more advanced, the other was only doing limited federation and not taking advantage of the power of Okta.

How has it helped my organization?

Okta improved both organizations where I've worked with it:

  • Better Single Sign-On (reducing the number of passwords)
  • Improved accountability (to know what users were doing, and where they were working on Identity and authentication services)
  • Authentication (where Okta's own MFA solutions or work in combination with Duo were very useful for strengthening the security of major systems)

What is most valuable?

Okta's great for their federation capabilities where it lets the IT team enable business with anyone using common federation features across SaaS, PaaS, IaaS, and internal applications. The Multi-Factor Authentication capability lets you address one of the biggest challenges around security - MFA to make it hard for adversaries to get into your systems.

What needs improvement?

Better multi-factor authentication integration and support, it's around v2.0 and will need a 3.0 release for maturity.

For how long have I used the solution?

Less than one year.

Provides good stability, but its connector framework needs improvement
Pros and Cons
  • "Okta Workforce Identity is easy to use and has a lot of components."
  • "There should be automated aggregation and complete classification processes included in it."

What is most valuable?

Okta Workforce Identity is easy to use and has a lot of components.

What needs improvement?

The product's connector framework needs improvement. There should be automated aggregation and complete classification processes included in it.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using Okta Workforce Identity for five months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is a stable product.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is a scalable product. It provides flexibility to increase the number of users. Our customer environment has 5000 to 6000 users.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is straightforward. We deploy it on the cloud. The product has good documentation to refer to for implementation. We require two engineers and one manager to execute the process.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The product has a user-based license model.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We evaluated SailPoint, IBM, and Oracle. Our customer migrated from Okta to IBM for more features.

What other advice do I have?

I rate Okta Workforce Identity a five out of ten. If you don't have critical use cases and do not want a full-fledged IGA solution, Okta is a good product. However, if you want to use certification, access requests, and an extensive connector framework, Okta does not provide it.

Has useful provisioning features and integration with other applications
Pros and Cons
  • "I find the provisioning features and the integration with other applications useful."
  • "The solution’s policies are difficult to understand due to the policy methods. They use authentication. The solution’s workflow is also difficult and not very active. They need to have proper documentation on it. In the next release, I would like to see the workflows being more digestible."

I find the provisioning features and the integration with other applications useful.

What needs improvement?

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the solution for six months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is scalable. We are a medium-sized company and we use it full scale. There are around 200 users for the solution. It also requires two admins.

How are customer service and support?

The solution’s customer support is fast, reliable, and helpful.

How was the initial setup?

We didn’t do the deployment because it was difficult. We had to rely on an in-house team.

What about the implementation team?

Our in-house team deployed the solution.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The solution’s pricing needs to be reasonable. You are dealing with a lot of components and the pricing is component-based.

Easy to set up, good documentation, and supports YubiKey
Pros and Cons
  • "The support for YubiKey is really good because you don't actually have to type in your username and password."
  • "There are some issues with the interface that can be improved."

What is our primary use case?

We use this product to control access to applications.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable features are identity management and OpenID.

At this time, Okta is doing really well and covering every aspect. Everybody in the company knows Okta and how to work with it.

The support for YubiKey is really good because you don't actually have to type in your username and password. Everything is taken care of, automatically.

What needs improvement?

There are some issues with the interface that can be improved.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with Okta Workforce Identity for more than three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability is good.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

This is a scalable solution and we have more than 10,000 users.

How are customer service and technical support?

They provide a lot of support but there are still places where we get stuck.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Prior to Okta, we were working with Active Directory.

We are using Azure for authentication and I really like Okta compared to that. Okta is more extensive than the product from Microsoft Azure.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is really easy.

What about the implementation team?

We have three people for maintenance.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The price of this product could be lower. It's just like Box, where when it first came on the market the price was lower. Once people started using it, the price increased.

I am looking forward to seeing what Azure Active Directory has to offer. Microsoft is giving Okta competition in terms of pricing and other features.

What other advice do I have?

In summary, this is a good product but it is not perfect. There are some areas that need improvement.

I would rate this solution a nine out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
