Integrates Between Server and Replication Station
Pros and Cons
  • "We get a lot of features with Veeam and we are happy to use this solution. After shutdown, the servers here automatically turn off and Veeam is keeping up all this. It's tension free work."
  • "We try to compare Veeam with other solutions because we are the operations. Then we can give the answers for improvement which is the specific additional system features that other solutions provide."

What is our primary use case?

Our primary use case with Veeam Backup & Replication is as the intermediate agent. Veeam integrates devices between the main server and the replication station.

We set this resolution between the main server and our replication machine. It is getting images from VMware. We serve up with Veeam and it responds to the daily load.

With Veeam Backup & Replication, replicated servers will be picked up again from the new location station machine. Now our table updates are available automatically.

We get a lot of features with Veeam and we are happy to use this solution. After shutdown, the servers here automatically turn off and Veeam is keeping up all this. It's tension free work.

How has it helped my organization?

Veeam Backup & Replication assists us to improve to good infrastructure.

  1. Veeam system makes a server image that is relative to our network requirements.
  2. We get strong back-up capability.
  3. We are announcing to users that our server will not shut down for a single second.
  4. Failover with Veeam is okay.
  5. We are trying to make NES Network Extronance and Network Express copy to replication server using Veeam.
  6. Using distribution file systems, we take backups from users and clients.
  7. We use copies struck to one server by Veeam and make it replication-to-replication.
  8. We use Veeam for replication-to-replication virtual machines.

With Veeam Backup & Replication, data is secure and strongly stored to replication machines. If we consider the IT systems and infrastructure, then Veeam is making us environmentally friendly.

We are not taking more human resources to take manual back-up systems. With Veeam, we are not taking manual copies to offline or online backup. This is not necessary.

Also, we are reducing the maintenance cost for hardware because of not deploying more than required for our infrastructure.

Veeam helps us on data confidentiality using a simple file transfer. The set of file systems in our data is open, but when we use Veeam, we just make an image, a compact file. Nobody can open it and no one can keep it.

The ransomware and other exploits cannot attack this file. Veeam optimizes our cost for recovering files and data. In this way, Veeam Backup & Replication is a help to our company.

What is most valuable?

We evaluated different options and we picked the most significant one, Veeam. The main features about the Veeam Backup & Replication suite I like are:

  • If a Veeam image is copied to a replication machine, then Veeam automatically checks to see if ransomware attacked or not.
  • Veeam will automatically check if a file is corrupt or not. If a file is corrupt, then it will not make a backup copy to the replication server. That means the corrupt file is not copied to replication.
  • We have confidence that our replication image is good and not corrupted as VM machines.

These are the significant features and there are a lot of features with Veeam. You need to first check out the Veeam website.

    What needs improvement?

As far as additional features, in the comparative market, a lot of solutions are now from VMware. Cisco has its own solution for replicating back-ups and administration.

We try to compare Veeam with other solutions because we are the operations. Then we can give the answers for improvement which is the specific additional system features that other solutions provide.

For how long have I used the solution?

    One to three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Personally, my experience with the stability of Veeam Backup & Replicate is very good. I tested and I uploaded it in virtualization in my private cloud, i.e. private infrastructure.

If we would like to use the networking system or any of the hardware-based VM systems, then it will likely be a larger investment. If you have only a little to invest in the application-based VM system, then it is okay. Veeam is a cost-effective solution

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Scalability with Veeam Backup & Replicate is very good. On our team:

    • They try to get the support of reference material for the software base.
    • They already made a package using Veeam on a single machine license.
    • If you having 50 VM machines, virtual machines, then you can take 10 packages.
    • This requires a 1 to 10 heavy package license. Then you can increase your VMs repeatedly.
    • If you would like to engage your infrastructure more than 50, more than 100, more than 1000, then you can enterprise license Veeam and have the machines in your infrastructure

My only concern about Veeam Backup & Replicate is that it could be more open.

How are customer service and support?

In previous times, we were getting technical support from the Veeam team directly from their Los Angeles office and Namibia. They had given us some numbers and contacts. They were giving us support and they introducing the new features or new deployments.

What I have seen with experience is that technical support is quite good. I am pleased with Veeam customer support operations. They are straightforward.

I got downloaded information from online and I tried that. Personally, then I got 90% accuracy for the administration that I tried. I had about a 90% success rate with online info-services.

After that, I spoke directly with Veeam customer support on a call to Los Angeles. They gave the support and it was very easy.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Before using Veeam Backup & Replication, we had not deployed any backup systems in the company.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Actually, the most important criteria for us when considering a solution is service. When we are taking a decision regarding the hardware or software or any applications, then first we need to tell where and what the services they are giving us. Then we evaluate the service level element.

The main important criteria when selecting a vendor are then what are the features and services available in the devices or applications. This should be our main selection path to select any hardware devices or applications.

Because of our world, in the market, we can get low prices on devices or we could then see what is available. What I actually need is what I need to deploy, the features I need to be deploying in my architecture. That needs to be considered first in systems administration because the price can vary.

In my personal experience, these values and features should be the first standard for selecting a device or application.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We started thinking of the new systems. We surveyed from IT Central Station and several other portals that are available online. We got the reports and we did the contact with the vendors.

What other advice do I have?

For the Veeam Backup & Replication software, we care about the system dependency on software-based, not the hardware-based licenses. For actualization concepts and hyper-connection concepts, businesses can easily use Veeam replication and instances.

I would rate Veeam Backup & Replication a ten out of ten. The reason, first of all, is because Veeam provides what I need for my devices, my services, and service providers.

With Veeam Backup & Replicate, I'm getting the full service of what I need.

      1. Seems that VEEAM is doing dedupe and compression PER JOB and NOT globally.
      2. At TSM there feature of replicate node + protect stg, that give you the option to replicate the backup to a remote site and is NOT necessary for all backups, so you can choose to keep fewer copies at the remote site.
      3. This gives you an option to do an immediate restore in case of the main site problem.

With WAN acceleration, we send less data through our WAN lines. The reporting tool shows the status of the infrastructure.

      What is most valuable?

      • The quality of compression and deduplication is better than other products.
      • The WAN acceleration allows us to send less data through our WAN lines.
      • The easiness of the suite.
      • The reporting tool, Veeam One, is very powerful and helps obtain a clear view of the infrastructure situation.

How has it helped my organization?

Let me start by mentioning that, before Veeam, my company used to backup data with Microsoft Robocopy. Backup times now are more than ten times faster and the data to be moved is only a fraction.

This behaviour has been improved with the new version, 9.5.

      What needs improvement?

Determining the space for the WAN acceleration server sometimes is hard, especially if you have many source sites for the data. I would like to have a kind of storage space calculator that gives me an estimate for the size of the WAN accelerator server we are creating; give it a list of VMs to be backed up.

I am requesting this because the standard rules in the Veeam End User Guide often resulted in us making a wrong calculation, especially for the target WAN acceleration machine. The result was many failed backups due to "no more space" errors! And creating a VM that is "too big” wastes precious space (the opposite of what we want to achieve).

For how long have I used the solution?

I have used Veeam Backup & Replication and Endpoint Backup for three years and the full suite for six months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Usually the program works well and it's stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I think the resource request (storage space) for the whole suite (usually on a complex environment) is slightly high, especially the WAN accelerators. In any case, it is pretty scalable.

How are customer service and technical support?

Technical support is 7/10. Sometimes, it asks for logs and keeps asking for information that sometimes is unnecessary. This causes it to take a long time to understand the real problem and to obtain the solution.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I previously used Backup Exec, the Acronis suite and many others, but Veeam was clearly better; that is the reason why I switched.

      How was the initial setup?

We needed more than a month to set up a stable and working installation: first, because I did not know well some of the deep functions of the suite; and second, because to get the best results from Veeam, you need to build a complex network of machines.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Pricing is a bit high from my experience and licensing can be improved; my company is a holding company and we had problems using licenses for sites around the world in the HQ server. (It's not allowed; we had to merge all the licenses into one big one.)

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We saw more than a 10% compression ratio compared to Acronis Backup 11.5 tested earlier. I did it in March 2016 with a sample of 20 virtual machines and helped me complete a thorough test between various candidates (Veeam and Acronis were the finalists).

Based on my experiences with other backup software, we headed straight for this option.

What other advice do I have?

Do some (at least) high-level training for the suite: If you don't want to waste time with many attempts during the installation, the best option is to understand the fundamentals of the Veeam suite.

My impression is that this suite is usually reliable and very powerful.

Nice review. Veeam is a great product and when upgrading to the ENT+ license allows more features. We use Nimble integration mainly. I will have to check the WAN acceleration to see how this can help us too.

I can quickly restore an entire VM even in a test environment.

      Valuable Features

The Backup Enterprise Manager is great as it allows me to see and manage all backup jobs from multiple Backup servers. The ability to create separate backup and replication jobs and also create failover plans. The Direct NFS Access is also a great feature for backing up VMs on our Tintri storage.

      Improvements to My Organization

Previously we had been using a CDP based backup solution where an agent was installed on the guest OS. Besides taking longer to configure backups, performing a BMR was much more complicated and required creating a new VM and using a boot disk. Using Veeam has made the entire process much easier and I can quickly restore an entire VM even in a test environment.

      Room for Improvement

By default, I use “Enable parallel processing” which is great to have multiple jobs run at the same time. I would like the option to disable this within the Backup Job so certain jobs run sequentially instead. Reason being, I may have an application that runs on several different VMs that I would like to keep in a single Backup Job, but if they backup at the same time such as the app server and SQL server, it causes spikes in the application. The only way around this is to create separate backup jobs scheduled to run at different times.

      Use of Solution

We've been using it for two years.

      Deployment Issues

We had no issues with the deployment.

      Stability Issues

With Veeam v7 in conjunction with vSphere 5.5 using vSphere Flash Read Cache (vFRC), I started seeing issues with Veeam backups either failing or VM Snapshots constantly needing consolidation. This was directly related to vFRC which a stopped using in favor of a better solution.

      Scalability Issues

Scaling out is very easy, especially with the newly added feature “Scale-out Backup Repository”.

      Customer Service and Technical Support

      Customer Service:

Customer service has always been excellent.

      Technical Support:

Technically support has always been excellent, although rarely needed.

      Initial Setup

Setup was not too complicated, but I do recommend deciding how you are going to use the Backup Proxies and design around that. There are a few options for backups such are Direct Storage Access, Virtual Appliance, and Network. The Network backup is great with a 10Gb network, but I recently switched to take advantage of the Direct NFS Access. I have also used the Direct Storage Access with NetApp when it was added to version 8, but this has since been replaced with Tintri storage. There is also a matter of the Guest interaction proxy that does application-aware processing for Exchange, SQL, Domain Controllers, etc. I tend to set this up with more restrictions so not all proxies can access all subnets. Veeam does automatically select the correct proxy based on subnet which makes it easy once you have completed your initial setup.

      Implementation Team

I designed and implemented it myself.

      ROI

I am using the Veeam Service Provider solution where you pay per VM that is being backed up. So, the ROI is basically from the day you deploy it.

      Pricing, Setup Cost and Licensing

If you are an Enterprise and you think the price tag may be high, contact a Veeam Service Provider and see how they can help.

      Other Advice

Make sure you do your research before deciding to purchase a different product other than Veeam even if that include reaching out to someone like myself that has used the product. You will see other products that don’t use snapshots and claim to be better, or don’t cause VM stun because their product is different. The fact is a lot of this depends on your underlying infrastructure especially storage. If your infrastructure is old or using slow storage, then any product may not be easy to implement without issues.

Nice review. I really like that suggestion about Parallel Processing option within a job as you mentioned. It makes sense to have this for jobs that contain multiple servers for an Application. Hopefully Veeam implements this in a future version.

It has item-level recovery for Active Directory, Exchange, SQL Server and SharePoint, as well as backups for recoverability tests (SureBackup) and from storage snapshots (3PAR).

      What is most valuable?

      • Backup recoverability tests (SureBackup)
      • Backup from storage snapshots (3PAR)
      • Item-level recovery for Active Directory, Exchange, SQL Server and SharePoint
      • Virtual lab and on-demand sandboxes

How has it helped my organization?

Backups and restoration are 100% successful, plus we have the ability to automate backup recoverability tests.

      What needs improvement?

Physical workload protection and item level recovery for Linux-based systems.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've used it for six years.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

Never. This is the strength of the product.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Some minor issues such as feature bugs. They have all been solved by a support call or through a product update.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Before 6.0, yes, as the product was monolithic and didn't scale well. After 6.0, they changed the design to a scale-out design that fits any size. I haven't yet reached the limit of the product.

How are customer service and technical support?

      Customer Service:

      8/10.

      Technical Support:

8/10 as they are pretty reactive and can engage in cross-vendor problem resolution, which is is not the way with all their competitors. Regarding the fact it is a backup solution, this is a crucial point for me.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

      • VMWare VDR
      • Symantec NetBackup
      • VizionCore

They were either too slow or too buggy to have a reliable backup solution.

      How was the initial setup?

It was straightforward, and this is the DNA of this product. It is very simple to install and to operate.

      What about the implementation team?

It was installed in-house within a few hours. I now work for a vendor and I have installed the product for hundreds of customers.

      What was our ROI?

At the time I was a customer, it took something like three months because of a big storage system outage. Moreover, their pricing is based on the number of CPU sockets in your virtualization environment. I would even say that the longer you use the product, the cheaper it becomes. This is due to the core density of newer CPUs - we aren't buying more CPUs, just CPUs with more cores.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I think enterprise level is a good way to go if you don't have 3PAR or NetApp storage in-house; otherwise, switch to Enterprise Plus to have the best-in-class backup solution at the moment.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We compared our existing solutions to Veeam.

What other advice do I have?

Just give it a try. Download the product, install-it and test it. The best way to know what it can do and what it can't is to test it through a proof of concept.

Affordable and reliable general hypervisor management with significant lack of customer support
      Pros and Cons
      • "Veeam ONE has proven to be a reliable tool not just for backups but also for general hypervisor management."
      • "I am highly dissatisfied with their customer support approach."

What is our primary use case?

Our customers were seeking an affordable monitoring solution. We noticed that traditional options like VMware's Operations Manager are quite expensive, so we found a more budget-friendly alternative. Veeam ONE has proven to be a reliable tool not just for backups but also for general hypervisor management.

      What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature is the capacity planning aspect of the solution.

      What needs improvement?

There are not enough charts and diagrams available. Other solutions, such as VMware's vRealize, offer a more extensive range of charts and diagrams for monitoring the environment. Enhancing the user experience, particularly in terms of providing more comprehensive chart and diagram options, would be beneficial.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with it for more than ten years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It offers good stability capabilities. I would rate it eight out of ten.

How are customer service and support?

I am highly dissatisfied with their customer support approach.  When we face a certain issue, they simply provide a website link and expect us to resolve the problem on our own. If the issue persists, we need to revert to them for further assistance. This process can be time-consuming when dealing with problems. This differs significantly from our experiences with other vendors, like Nutanix. For instance, when we open a support case with Nutanix, they not only provide a dedicated web portal but also offer direct assistance tailored to our company's specific situation. This approach is notably more effective. I would rate it five out of ten.

How would you rate customer service and support?

      Neutral

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I learned about Veeam ONE before exploring other solutions, and I have found it to be a highly cost-effective option when compared to alternative solutions.

      How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was straightforward. I would rate it nine out of ten.

      What about the implementation team?

The deployment process took approximately one week because, following the initial setup, we held several technical meetings to fine-tune the configuration to align with the specific requirements of the customer's use case.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It's an extremely cost-effective solution. I would rate it three out of ten.

What other advice do I have?

It is an excellent solution, incredibly user-friendly and manageable. I would highly recommend it based on its robust features and ease of use. The main issue lies in the quality of customer support. I would rate it seven out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

      On-premises

User-friendly interface, multiple licensing options available, and the support is good
      Pros and Cons
      • "The interface is very user-friendly."
      • "In the future, Veeam should release a hardware backup appliance that can be integrated with their software."

What is our primary use case?

We are a solution provider and we deal with different backup solutions including Veeam Backup & Replication. This is something that we do on a project basis and have been doing for a long time.

We primarily use this solution for backup and replication; we buy the software and map it to our customer's requirements.

      What is most valuable?

The interface is very user-friendly. The customers in my region are happy with it.

      What needs improvement?

No product is 100% and there is always room for improvement. One of the downsides to Veeam is that it's just software-based. In the future, Veeam should release a hardware backup appliance that can be integrated with their software.

Better integration with other products would be an improvement.

For how long have I used the solution?

      Veeam Backup & Replication

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

      This is a stable product.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Scalability is not an issue with this solution. There are multiple licensing options available to handle different environments. For example, there is a 10-pack of VM licenses available as an option.

How are customer service and support?

Based on the communication that I have had with my peers, my understanding is that the support we have had from Veeam has been great.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We deal with Commvault, depending on the project, and we are also a distributor of Arcserve.

      How was the initial setup?

As a presales engineer, I have not been part of the installation.

      What about the implementation team?

If needed, we do the installation for our clients. Our technical process team is responsible for that.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

There are multiple licensing options available to handle environments of varying sizes. The price is quite competitive compared to other products in my region.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

The customer is the one that chooses the backup solution. For example, they will come to us and say "We want Veeam Backup and Replication", and then we provide the licenses to them.

What other advice do I have?

This is a product that I definitely recommend for small businesses.

Overall, this is a good product but there is always room for improvement. If Veeam released a hardware appliance to work with their software, then I would rate them a ten out of ten.

I would rate this solution an eight out of ten.

Great snapshots and good special features with the ability to adapt the design
      Pros and Cons
      • "The solution is stable and the performance is good."
      • "The initial setup is complex."

What is our primary use case?

The solution is based on the IAF solutions that are specific for moving the data centers that we have to the cloud. This is the main tension for us right now. We are investing in some past solutions, however, we're not using them yet. There are some tests, some small tests, however, we are moving IAF solutions in order to move our data centers.

      What is most valuable?

We like Veeam as it is the kind of backup that has basic snapshots. It's very useful for us as we have a lot of virtual servers. This is the most impressive thing that we see.

There are some special features from Veeam. They have the replication and the kind of backup that we can use. We have a very strong solution in the network. Due to the fact that we have several internal DMS's, we needed to make a special design. Veeam adapted to that. That's why we choose it. With all the solutions, it was not possible to use the actual network structure that we had. Veeam made it possible.

The solution is stable and the performance is good.

      The product can scale.

      What needs improvement?

For us, it's important that the products can be adapted to different network scenarios. This is the biggest problem. The issues that we had when we selected the products were due to the specifics on the network from a security point of view. Security for us is the most important feature that we need to work with. THey need to ensure that it's possible to secure the network.

      The initial setup is complex.

We use several proxies, reverse proxies, due to our needs. It's not so common. There's not too much information and it's not so useful. They could develop it more and they could market it better. Not many users have this scenario. The reverse proxy, for us, was an important piece to implement. If a user has a good view of the reverse proxying during the implementation, it's better.

For how long have I used the solution?

The solution has been implemented in the company for about one year at this point.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is very stable. We needed to buy the biggest server to accommodate it. The requirements were very high. That's why we started late when they decided to use it. However, after we followed the recommendations and followed the certification of equipment servers and storage that we needed, it's okay. Now we find it's very stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability is very good. Everybody uses it. In general, we have about 125,000 people using it.

We likely will increase usage in the future.

How are customer service and support?

We needed some technical support at the start. It was good. Here in Brazil, they are from Brazil and they have helped us too in the design phase. That said, the product is very good. We don't need exactly support for any issue that we found. We've only needed some help for the implementation, the start of the design.

      How was the initial setup?

In terms of the implementation, it's still being rolled out. It's very big and there is a very sparse structure that we have. It's global. It will take about two years for it to be completely implemented, due to the places and locations we need to implement it. We need to make and design for each place as it is not standard. That's why it takes a long time. We prefer to take it in parts to be careful with the implementation, in order to see if it's really what we want. Therefore, for us, the setup is quite complex.

The results have been good so far. People are liking it very much. That said, we still have some designs to do for other places that we have implemented.

Due to the implementation, we are doing, there are about 50 people working on the deployment. This is just an estimation. It's quite a large project.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We pay the licensing fees on a yearly basis. There may be a few additional costs, however, I cannot speak to those exactly. Our technical team might have a better idea of what is involved in terms of licensing arrangements.

We tried the base license, however, it's my understanding that it wasn't enough and we needed a bit more.

What other advice do I have?

      We are a Veeam partner.

In terms of types of deployments used, at this time it's been working more on-premises, however, we have intentions to use the cloud. We are moving several loads to the cloud.

I would advise new users that the design is the most important piece. There are several options in the ways that you can implement it. My recommendation is to look at the strategy. Networking becomes very important. Having a good design at the outset makes things easier.

I'd rate the solution at a nine out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

      On-premises

Provides granular restoration, has good replication features, and scales well
      Pros and Cons
      • "The granular restoration that it provides for a business application is most valuable. For example, for Exchange, we can restore a single mailbox or email. We can also do SQL Server restoration and bare-metal recovery for operating systems."
      • "Veeam currently lacks features for backing up to network-attached storage. Veeam Backup & Replication agents do not support S3 storage. Only Veeam Backup & Replication server supports S3 storage."

What is our primary use case?

It is for backup and disaster recovery as a service. It is deployed in our data center, and then we sell the service to our customers.

      What is most valuable?

The granular restoration that it provides for a business application is most valuable. For example, for Exchange, we can restore a single mailbox or email. We can also do SQL Server restoration and bare-metal recovery for operating systems.

Replication features are very useful for customers. They can recover the services and move from one data center to another.

      What needs improvement?

Veeam currently lacks features for backing up to network-attached storage. Veeam Backup & Replication agents do not support S3 storage. Only Veeam Backup & Replication server supports S3 storage.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using this solution for about five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Its stability is good. I would rate it an eight out of 10 in terms of stability.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It scales well. I would rate it an eight out of 10 in terms of scalability.

In our infrastructure, we have hundreds of users. Our customers are from many markets, but its users are from their IT department.

How are customer service and support?

I would rate them an eight out of 10.

      How was the initial setup?

It is not complex. It is straightforward. We can deploy it to our customers in about 1 to 2 hours or 1 to 2 days. It depends on a customer's infrastructure.

      What about the implementation team?

We deploy it ourselves, and we only use support when we have technical issues with the product. We have three engineers for deployment.

      What was our ROI?

It is very difficult to calculate because it is a backup solution. It is not a business service, which makes it very difficult to calculate the ROI.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We are fine with its pricing policy.

We provide service for our customers, and the licensing is on a monthly basis. They get licenses, computer resources, and our support. Everything is included in a single price.

What other advice do I have?

I would advise others to test this product before buying it. There are many backup products and services, and they have different features and functionalities. We provide our customers a 30-days trial period to test the product for free, and then they can agree or not agree to use this product.

I would rate it an eight out of 10.
