We use it for the backups.
Network Engineer at a manufacturing company with 51-200 employees
Allows me to make server-level backups for DR and virtual server backups for file-level restores
Pros and Cons
- "If there was a wizard that would lead you down a road, when creating a backup, that would probably be better than having to go online or call somebody to actually do a backup. It's not intuitive..."
- "I can't select a network location. I have to map a drive on the server, and then I have to select the mapped drive in order for it to put the backup out there."
What is our primary use case?
How has it helped my organization?
The advantages to me are I make two backups. I make a backup of the entire server that goes offsite. That's for disaster recovery. And then I make another copy of just two virtual servers that write on the physical server to a local NAS device. That way, I can do file-level restores.

What needs improvement?
I have used it in the past. Not the same software, but the same company, and had success with it, and it was fairly easy to use. This one is much more complicated, but there are a lot more things involved in a backup. I have had issues with this one just in completing backups. Sometimes, for some reason, it has to run several times in order for it to do it completely, so I put in a ticket. We worked through it and it just seemed to solve itself, and neither one of us, neither the technician nor I, knew what it was doing or why it did, it but it fixed itself.
I also think the fact that it is extremely customizable means that it's really easy to get something wrong, and it not work as intended. So I would say, if there was a wizard that would lead you down a road, when creating a backup, that would probably be better than having to go online or call somebody to actually do a backup. It's not intuitive whenever you're trying to do something. You don't know whether you need to make a plan first or whether you need to make a backup first, it really depends on what you're trying to do and you really can't do that without asking somebody a question.
The problem that I've had would be more along the lines of it connecting to something else to back it up. For example, I'm currently having a problem with the way, when you have to select a network, I can't select a network location. I have to map a drive on the server, and then I have to select the mapped drive in order for it to put the backup out there.
I can't say this location is where it needs to go. I actually have to map a drive instead of going, "Just go to this IP address, this shared location, and put it here," I can't do that. It won't take it. I have to actually map a drive and put it in there for it to go, "Okay." If for some reason there's something wrong with that map, then the backup can't go there, even though I can ping the location, I can pull up the location, the software doesn't do that.
Or, if it does do that, I don't know how to get it to do that, which I would say would be my complaint with it, the fact that there's not a lot of intuitive ways to be able to do something. In other words, it expects you to have the knowledge of how to operate it in order to set it up. If it's giving you a yes or no question and you don't know what this means, whatever that question is - "Do you want to do this, yes or no?" - if you don't know what "this" means or what "this" does, then I don't know how to answer that question
The problem is I can't select Help and it says, "Okay, if you're doing this, this is what you need to do. Or, this is for this, so if you want this, select yes. If you want this, select no." There's none of that. There's just me saying, "I don't know what this means." So, then I have to google it, try to figure it out.
If there was a wizard that would say,
- "What are you trying to do?"
- "I want to do a backup like this."
- "Is it going to be offsite, online, another server?"
It would create the configuration by asking questions through the wizard. This is what Microsoft has been doing for decades. That's how their stuff gets set up correctly. If Acronis had one of those - and it might, I just don't know how to get to it, or to start it - for it do the stuff for you, that would be a big thing for me.
For how long have I used the solution?
Less than one year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?
No issues as far as it locking up or crashing, just actually getting it to do a backup, and do it correctly.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Any time that you do a backup that's not at the local level, it's online, you're at the mercy of whatever your connection is. If your connection is not good or stable, then you're going to have issues.
The issue is, when I did an offline backup - I don't know if it was my connection or because of how the software works or how it handles its packets - to upload the initial backup up took something like four days. That's a long time to me.
After the initial backup is done, when it does its daily backup offsite, it only takes about 20 minutes, 30 minutes. It's normal for it to take longer for the initial backup because you have to put all new information up there. After that you're just changing, it's a just a differential, so that's normal. When I'm doing the backup to the local, after the initial one, it takes about six minutes to do the backup.
The problem is that to get that initial thing done is painful. After that, the backup works okay.
How are customer service and support?
I've talked to tech support several times. I would say they're a seven or eight out of 10.
This is going to sound bad, but this is the way it is in a lot of tech stuff. Whenever I call tech support and talk with somebody, and I can't understand them because of their accent, it's a problem. When I have support from a non native English speaker, it's very hard for me to understand stuff, and when they have to repeat things several times because I'm not sure what they're saying, to me that's a communication issue. If I'm calling the company, and I need support on their product, and I can't understand the person that I'm speaking with, then that's a communication issue that's not on me. That's on the company.
It's not just Acronis that is like this, there are a lot of companies that are like this, and I understand why they do it. I'm just saying as an IT professional, it's very frustrating when you have to ask somebody to repeat things several times, or I repeat it and it's not correct, and they repeat it. And, we spend most of our time trying to figure out what each other is saying instead of fixing the problem.
To me that's extremely frustrating.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We used the inherent Windows Server Backup in the operating system. And the reason we switched is, the way it's configured, for me to save to a location that's local, it has to take the entire location. In other words, I have to dedicate the entire NAS device to the backup, and it will reformat all of it and take all its space for the backup.
I didn't want that. I have a NAS device that has other backup stuff on it that is not part of the server backup. It's archived information, so I couldn't do it that way. So for me to have a backup I would have to do the backups manually every day.

How was the initial setup?
You could use training for setup, but if they just made quick tutorial videos, for example, this is how you do a backup, a local backup, and have the video go through and do it. You would watch it. You would be looking at the same screen as you look at if you were doing it yourself. And then somebody would narrate. "This is what you do: you do this, you do this, you do this." Just walk through the steps. It doesn't have to be really detailed. Rather, when you get to an option where there's a question, and it's a yes or no question: "This is where you select this." Just a little video that's two minutes or three minutes long that shows you how to set up a backup. Something as simple as that.
A lot of people in the tech industry, or people who do this for living, they learn things quicker this way; in other words, show me once, I can do it.
You don't need to have it for the lowest common denominator, make it kind of a medium level. Worse case scenario, they just rewind and watch it again. To me, if they did that then you'd have little videos where you see how to do things, how you use the app. Instead of it being written out, it's actually where I can visually see it. Some people learn better reading something, some people learn better doing something, some people learn better watching something, so give them different avenues.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
Yes, we evaluated Norton, which I don't like. Acronis. And then, of course, the Microsoft solution.
I like Acronis as a company and the backup solution. Like I said, I've used it before, and it was very easy to use. It was a different backup solution than the one I'm currently using, but still made by Acronis.
The same thing with Norton, I've had experiences with Norton, and it's a pain. There is always a problem, I have had configuration issues and restore issues using Norton. I don't know if it was that particular situation where it was a problem, but I've use Norton a couple of times and it's always been problematic. Every time I've used Acronis in the past - I've been doing this for 25 years - I haven't had any problems. So my experience in the past taught me to steer away from certain things. I don't use anything that has that word "Norton" on it. Seriously, whether it's antivirus, backup, it doesn't matter. Every time I've ever use any of their products it's always been a pain to get it configured and for it to work properly.
What other advice do I have?
I would say it's not a steep learning curve, but there's a learning curve, learning how you want it set up, because of the amount of options that you're given. It's good that you have a lot of different options. It's also bad that you have a lot of different options, because it is really easy for you to be able to make a selection that's not going to optimize your backup solution. So, I would say that as long as you know what you need, and you're familiar with the software, then you should not have many problems, with a little bit of learning/reading about the app before you use it.
I would say Acronis is about nine out of 10, overall. Some documentation or some wizards that would help you through the process, especially if you're new to the software, would benefit. I'm never going to give anybody a 10, so nine would be a 10, because everything can be improved. I don't believe in a 10.

Good price, world-class support, and supports on-premise, virtual, and cloud environments
Pros and Cons
- "Acronis is a flexible solution. It can back up workstations, endpoints, and even your virtual environments and cloud-based environments. So, we can do the backup of the whole gamut of products."
- "I would like to have more cybersecurity integration to properly round up the product and its offering. In terms of cybersecurity, if the offerings can be more versatile so that it is not just a backup solution, it would be great. Some addition to cybersecurity would really be helpful so that it becomes a kind of a suite of products. Backup and recovery form a part of the broader security strategy. Its integration with other cybersecurity solutions would provide proper visibility to not just your cybersecurity dashboard but also to all of your backups. You would have a pretty good view of the entire security landscape that you are managing."
What is our primary use case?
It is used for backup. In terms of deployment, it has got the capability of both. It can be on-premise and on the cloud.
What is most valuable?
Acronis is a flexible solution. It can back up workstations, endpoints, and even your virtual environments and cloud-based environments. So, we can do the backup of the whole gamut of products.
We can also do instantaneous recovery of individual items, files, documents, etc. It also has good pricing and support.
What needs improvement?
I would like to have more cybersecurity integration to properly round up the product and its offering. You would have a pretty good view of the entire security landscape that you are managing.
It should definitely be more stable, and it should support larger platforms. It can maybe support cross-cloud implementations.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using this solution for at least five years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
It is stable, but it could be more stable.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
It is scalable for medium to large environments but not for very large environments.
So far, we have provided this solution to about 15 to 25 customers.
How are customer service and technical support?
Technical support from Acronis is pretty good. It is world-class.
It has got very good and broad support.
How was the initial setup?
Its installation is not very difficult. It is pretty straightforward. With a little guidance from the manuals and other resources, a regular skilled engineer can easily perform the installation. Of course, it is not suitable for a layman.
We have two engineers supporting it. We also have one Sales and Account Management person for managing the plans.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Its price is quite friendly on the pocket. You need to pay the licensing cost upfront, and then the support charges are on an annual basis.
What other advice do I have?
I would definitely recommend Acronis to those who are starting out on the backup and recovery or want to migrate to and are looking for a fine-grain and stable solution. The good part is that you can still have the backup on the cloud. So, that would also take care of your offsite backup.
I don't have many comparison points. Based on whatever experience I've had on Acronis, I would rate it a nine out of 10.

General Manager at Comtodo
Supports numerous platforms without requiring a server; SQL databases need improving
Pros and Cons
- "The administration is pretty flexible in terms of defining a multi-tenant type of setup."
- "We have issues with the SQL databases which are a little shaky."
What is our primary use case?
We use this solution to basically backup anything. Servers, physical or virtual, and also some critical workstations. We can backup as emails or as folders. We are partners with Acronis and I'm the general manager.
How has it helped my organization?
The solution has helped us because it supports a lot of platforms and we don't have to install anything at our end in terms of a server and the like. Everything is on the cloud and that's a good start for us.
What is most valuable?
The administration is pretty flexible in terms of defining a multi-tenant type of setup. They've come up with a new feature this year, an anti-malware solution. It's focused for MSPs and enables clients and users to be setup to access only one customer or customers. The idea is great although it still needs some work. They also have a notary application to sign files as well as support for Office 365 and even Google Apps backup. We're able to back up mailboxes and OneDrive and SharePoint, things like that.
What needs improvement?
We have issues with the SQL databases which are supported but not so successfully, it's a little shaky. It seems to tie up the use of the database, locking it to some extent. The big issue is that users are not able to access the databases when it's doing a backup. Some of our customers work around the clock and need continual access. The SQL backups have to work better so that they have MySQL or Maria support. We still use CloudBerry sometimes and it doesn't have that issue. It does the backup without tying up the database and it's still accessible to the user. That's something that Acronis have to improve. The other is the antimalware application, which is good in theory, but doesn't work so well. It uses a lot of resources and causes issues with some applications. That occurred when we switched from Webroot to Acronis Antimalware. In some instances, we had to go back to Webroot. There are some great concepts but not always such great executions.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've been using this solution for over a year.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
It took us a couple of months to fine-tune the solution. Since then it's been fine, there's a dashboard where you can see in a snapshot how the backup is working and it's going well.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The solution is scalable and as you grow, you just move to a different price tier. We have one person monitoring the solution. We hope to increase use in the future.
How are customer service and technical support?
Technical support is not good. Support is often delayed because we don't have real-time support or the option of chat, which is not available yet. They are aware there's an issue and are hiring more support staff but my experience was not that good.
How was the initial setup?
There were some issues with the initial setup, we chose Google for storage and when it came to disaster recovery, it didn't work so I had to go back and redo everything again using Acronis Cloud instead. We lost some time as a result. I did the implementation but we had some support from Acronis.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Our licensing costs are around $1,000 per month and that includes storage. We have around 15 terabytes. Everyone looks for better pricing, but it's not that bad. They have changed the licensing three times since we started working with them. They're looking to make things simple. The idea is to use less license numbers. Then there's the transparency; we pay according to time on the platform and would like to know the cost, but it's not available. We get the invoice and by then it's too late. We need the information up front.
What other advice do I have?
With all the new features being added, the solution is becoming heavy in its use of resources. It's important to be aware of that because it affects the running of some applications. And that's not good because if you implement a security solution, you have to make it safer.
The concepts are there but the execution is not that good so I would rate it a seven out of 10.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
Hybrid Cloud
If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?

A stable solution that enables centralised management and enhances organizations’ security posture
Pros and Cons
- "Centralized management is valuable to us."
- "The pricing could be improved."
What is most valuable?
Centralized management is valuable to us. We have everything in a single pane of glass. Everything, including Microsoft 365, Google Workstations, servers, and virtual machines, is under one management console. It has EDR as well. To backup, I just click on the backup plan and run it. The tool has helped enhance our organization’s security posture. The solution provides a few features for cyber protection. The integrations run well. We get no errors. If something happens, I can restore it. That’s all I need.
What needs improvement?
The pricing could be improved. The licensing method for Microsoft 365 and Google is not that great.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using the solution since 2014.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The tool is stable. I rate the stability a nine out of ten.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
We have five to ten users in our organization. I rate the tool’s scalability an eight or eight and a half out of ten.
How are customer service and support?
We raise a support ticket when we need help. Depending on what we write in the ticket, the support team will come back to us with a response. If the ticket is not very comprehensive, it will take longer. Sometimes, the ticket needs to be escalated, and we waste time.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Neutral
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I used Backup Exec more than ten years ago. I switched to Acronis because I got an offer from Acronis with some free licenses. After I used them, I decided to purchase Acronis.
How was the initial setup?
I rate the ease of setup a nine out of ten. We have an on-premise version, and we use the cloud console. The deployment takes half an hour.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
I rate the pricing a five out of ten. In some aspects, the product is cost-effective.
What other advice do I have?
Overall, I rate the solution a nine out of ten.

Reliable, stable, and effective restore capabilities
Pros and Cons
- "Acronis Backup is valuable if your data is affected by ransomware, you are able to get it back."
- "There are times when the backups are slow. A faster backup would be better."
What is our primary use case?
My initial experience with Acronis was to backup my email server's contents. This happened in 2008 when my email suddenly went down, but to my surprise, the backup didn't include the email server. However, after restoring everything, I gained confidence in the software and began using it to backup my DC servers.
What is most valuable?
Acronis Backup is valuable if your data is affected by ransomware, you are able to get it back.
What needs improvement?
There are times when the backups are slow. A faster backup would be better.
The cloud faces a danger concerning data integrity. Briefly, the threat is to attack the integrity of data stored in the cloud. A hybrid solution that combines cloud storage with local storage on your DC server and provides a secure perimeter to protect data without alterations would be ideal. It's crucial that this solution also synchronizes with the cloud to prevent data from being distorted or stolen.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using Acronis Backup for approximately 10 years.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The solution is reliable and stable.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The price of Acronis Backup could be reduced, it is expensive.
What other advice do I have?
I rate Acronis Backup a ten out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

Co-Owner at Angels Dtp
Works in the background and lets me easily recover from accidental file deletions or other errors
Pros and Cons
- "The most valuable feature is the fact that it backs up my systems transparently in the background, and I'm not even conscious of it."
- "When I first started using Acronis, I found it a little bit confusing when it came to the configuration."
What is our primary use case?
I use the basic Acronis solution to back up all of my drives. I have a desktop and a laptop, with several hard drives attached to them.
How has it helped my organization?
In difficult situations, where something was accidentally erased or there was another kind of error, I can return to the latest backup and recover. For me, it's been very successful and very effective.
What is most valuable?
The most valuable feature is the fact that it backs up my systems transparently in the background, and I'm not even conscious of it. I just get a notice that it's successfully backed up.
What needs improvement?
When I first started using Acronis, I found it a little bit confusing when it came to the configuration.
Sometimes I have a problem where my settings need to be reset. However, I have been using it for so long that I know what I have to do it fix them.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using Acronis for between three and four years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
This is a stable solution, other than the occasional problem that I have with needing to reset the settings.
How are customer service and technical support?
Technical support is excellent. When I needed help, in the beginning, they did it with a remote connection. They were able to log into my system, take care of the problem, and explain what they did.
I have been in contact with them from time to time and they are still excellent.
How was the initial setup?
I needed help from technical support in the beginning when I first started working with it.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The cost of updates is less than $100 USD yearly. If you don't update it then there are no additional charges.
What other advice do I have?
My advice for anybody who is implementing Acronis is to contact support if they have any trouble. I would definitely recommend them. As it is now, this is a product that I am satisfied with the way it is, and I cannot think of any additional features that I would need.
I would rate this solution a nine out of ten.

Universal Restore allows you to reimage a computer without having to have all the drivers
Pros and Cons
- "I've reimaged servers and been back up and running in exactly no time with the completely new hardware."
- "It does not delete locked files."
What is most valuable?
I've reimaged servers and been back up and running in exactly no time with the completely new hardware.
The Universal Restore allows you to reimage a computer without having to have all the drivers. It allows you to boot the machine; once you get the machine up and running, then you can install the drivers.

What needs improvement?
It doesn't seem to do the following on the server but it does so on the work station: It does not delete locked files. So I created a small batch file that, after the backup, I go in and I run. That deletes all the extraneous lock files. I tried running the batch file automated but it would not run for some reason.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
I keep five months of full images of the server. And my work station, I keep three copies, three months' worth. And I backup my data separately. All the data is on a server and nothing is on the computer.
I backup data daily, five copies of it. Every five days, I overwrite the first one. So I've got five days of data, and three days of images and of the workstation, and five copies of the server image. I do it automated every month and I've never had a problem.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I've used all of them. I've used Norton Ghost, and years and years ago something called FastBack. Norton Ghost is really the only other one, but my experience is there are more problems with using it than Acronis.
How was the initial setup?
Very simple. I can create a backup program in just in minutes because I know the program so well. It is very easy to set up if you know anything about computers, and even if you're not familiar with computers.
It takes me no time at all and the backup procedure is pretty much straightforward, depending on how complicated your system is.
I'm using the pro version. Personally, I think that the home version is more complicated to set up than the professional version, for some reason. You would think it would be the other way around.

What other advice do I have?
Buy it. Simple. It's the best backup. I've used it to restore a number of machines without any trouble at all. It's very simple with a hard drive. It makes it much easier if you have a complete new system.
