Cloud disaster recovery has protected critical workloads and reduces downtime after ransomware
One of HPE Zerto Software’s best features for us is its built-in ransomware resilience. Zerto continuously journals data changes and uses anomaly detection to identify unusual write behavior that may indicate a ransomware or cyberattack. This gives us early visibility into potential threats and allows us to respond quickly. A key strength of the platform is its immutable journaling and recovery checkpoints. Zerto maintains frequent, immutable restore points that cannot be altered or encrypted by ransomware. This allows customers to roll environments back to a point just before an incident occurred, with confidence that the data has not been compromised. From a customer perspective, this provides a high level of assurance that their data remains protected and recoverable even in the event of a successful attack

Provides effective backup for physical servers and needs improvements for cloud compatibility
We use OpenText Data Protector for Oracle database backup and some applications that run for database security OpenText Data Protector is good for physical backup, specifically for physical servers. It is effective for direct backups to EMC library or storage without using a repository. However,…

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"What I appreciate the most about Zerto is the simplicity of it all."
"During a failover to a DR site, Zerto can automatically change the IP address of servers."
"Its ease of use and scalability are valuable."
"The real-time capability is what we're looking for."
"The features of HPE Zerto Software that I prefer the most are the backup and the vault. It helps with business continuity."
"The one-to-many replication functionality is helpful. While we were protecting our VMs in Azure, we were able to use the one-to-many feature to also replicate the same VMs to our new data center, in preparation for data center migration."
"My organization has experienced the benefits of using the tool, which include the ability to test our disaster recovery quickly."
"This product is impressively easy to use. It's dummy-proof, once it's set up."
"The normal file system backup is easy to manage, and our success rate is quite high."
"The initial setup is very easy."
"Performs the backup properly and protects our data."
"It's supports Unix, Linux, all of the OS's. It's very stable software."
"What we find most valuable in Micro Focus Data Protector is that it provides Japanese data protection, for example, it protects information such as the full Japanese name, address, etc."
"Regarding scalability, it's unlimited with Data Protector. You can link multiple installations and let them work together. They can share backup devices. You have many possibilities with Data Protector. It's very proficient."
"The solution is easy to use."
"I like that Micro Focus keeps a separate catalog of our data."

Cons

"Zerto could improve the product by lowering the cost."
"I would like to see improvement on the Zerto Virtual Replication appliances, so that they are a little bit more streamlined as opposed to now where they just span multiple ZVR appliances like there were gremlins... as this thing grows it just spawns unlimited numbers of additional ZVR appliances and you end up with a bunch so that you can't really tell which is which."
"Outside of disaster recovery, we are looking to leverage HPE Zerto Software for converting from VMware loads to Hyper-V. We have been doing testing and have concerns that support for Hyper-V ending with 9.7."
"Zerto can improve the dashboard by making it even more simple. Right now, there's a lot on the dashboard, and it can be overwhelming. If you're an experienced user, then you'll find it easy to use, but if you're a beginner, it will take you some time."
"An improvement I would like to see in HPE Zerto Software is the ability to start protecting bare-metal configurations, as today it only handles virtualized workloads."
"There are quite a few elements in the long-term retention areas that I wish were better. The bio-level recovery indexing of backups is the area I struggle with the most. That's probably because I desire to do tasks that ordinary users wouldn't do with the solution. The standard medium to large customer would probably never ask for anything like I ask for, so I think it's pretty good the way it is. I'm excited to see some of the new improvements coming in the 9.5 version. Some of the streamlines and how the product presents itself for some of the recovery features could be better."
"An improvement I would like to see in HPE Zerto Software is the ability to start protecting bare-metal configurations, as today it only handles virtualized workloads."
"The product could benefit from improvements in automation, specifically in the area of failovers."
"In SAP restoration, we faced issues with changing the SIDs and changing the path for every backup object. It is quite a lengthy process to do that."
"They should design the solution so that it is much easier for deployment and make the UI easy to use."
"We have a lot of requests for the Micro Focus team, particularly in terms of the Japanese data pattern, as it's not as good now. The Japanese data pattern accuracy of the Micro Focus Data Protector needs to be improved because there are a lot of false negatives and false positives. We are currently testing this and our product team has been communicating with the Micro Focus team."
"VM backups needs to be improved. They need to make it similar to the way Veeam and Commvault are doing the virtual backups."
"Micro Focus are improving Data Protector with every new version and since we began undergoing training with the latest version we have not faced any real challenges yet. However, their support does need to be improved, in my opinion. In certain critical cases that we've had, they did not provide a satisfactory level of support."
"OpenText Data Protector is more difficult to use and configure than OpenText VIM. The user-friendliness of OpenText Data Protector has to be increased, and the complexity of the tool needs to be reduced."
"It's very expensive compared to Veeam and other similar solutions."
"The interface has been the same for many years and needs to be updated"

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Licensing Zerto was very simple. They had a product that fit our size and scale. It made it really easy to choose."
"The pricing is a little more expensive in comparison to other tools."
"Nothing is cheap, but Zerto represents decent value."
"The pricing is slightly above average, but the immediate and comprehensive support makes the price acceptable."
"Zerto's price seems fair. It's competitive."
"You need to figure out how many critical servers and applications you have in your environment so you will know how many Zerto licenses to buy."
"The solution is expensive, but it's worth the price."
"Zerto's pricing is competitive, given the benefits and ease of setting it up. It may seem more expensive upfront, but you're going to save that over the long term by spending less engineering time configuring, reconfiguring, etc."
"We have many competitors who are pricing better, and we believe that our pricing is higher."
"Data Protector's pricing is very competitive and we have no issues in this regard. I would give it an eight out of ten in terms of pricing."
"It is more affordable compared to other vendors."
"There is a perpetual license involved in addition to support which needs to be renewed annually."
"Avoid using many LTO drives; when using fewer drives, the price will be extremely good."
"The pricing is acceptable for enterprise level companies, but it's not acceptable for small- and medium-sized businesses. Micro Focus Data Protector is not an enterprise level solution, and it should cover small- and medium-sized businesses with acceptable prices."
"It is fast, reliable, and its licensing policy is great."
"Pricing/licensing is Data Protector's single best offering. In its most basic environment, the only license required is for whatever target device is required."
