An all-in-one and cost-efficient solution that does what it promises
Zerto is very easy to use. Installation is about half an hour, and then it starts protecting the data and VMs. It is not very cumbersome. The UI is built very well. It is fairly self-explanatory. To be able to stand up a product you have never seen in half an hour and get it functioning and protecting speaks to how good the UI and workflow are. Zerto has near-synchronous replication. As a change is made on site A, it gets copied across the network to site B. We are five or six seconds behind production. If I have a heavily used system and I use traditional backups, I could be anywhere from 5 minutes to 23 hours behind. With Zerto, I am single-digit seconds behind. That works well for us. Our disaster recovery test, which used to span an entire week, now takes two days. We used to recover our servers in the first two or three days with a backup product and then test for two days before tearing it all down. Now, we spend half a day on new servers and ensuring things work with networking, etc. We test the next day, and we are done in two days. Across the entire company, we are able to save significant man-hours by shortening the test from a week to two days. We are now doing smaller tests once a month and larger tests once a year. Zerto has reduced our DR testing time by 60% to 70%. We are also able to do more disaster recovery testing. Previously, we were doing it once a year, whereas now, we are doing smaller tests once a month and our large tests once a year. In recovery point objectives, we are single-digit seconds behind. In terms of RTOs, I can recover 350 VMs in 30 minutes. It takes less than several seconds to restore a single VM. From days to 30 minutes for 350 compared to 100 VMs is an incredible time-saving in terms of RTOs and RPOs for us.

Provides effective backup for physical servers and needs improvements for cloud compatibility
We use OpenText Data Protector for Oracle database backup and some applications that run for database security OpenText Data Protector is good for physical backup, specifically for physical servers. It is effective for direct backups to EMC library or storage without using a repository. However,…

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The main valuable features are the fast RPO and RTOs we could achieve and the analytics behind that."
"The recovery speed is much faster and less complicated."
"The feature I appreciate the most about HPE Zerto Software is its fantastic replication and advanced problem-solving capabilities."
"It is way faster than just manually moving VMDKs, etc. It saves hours of time and a significant amount of money."
"I appreciate the real-time nature of Zerto. It continuously copies data, maintains synchronization, and allows rapid recovery of key systems."
"It's extremely easy to use with one of the shortest setups I've ever done."
"The solution has helped to reduce downtime in situations; it gave us the ability to roll back a bad change that was made."
"The failover test option in HPE Zerto Software is the most valuable at this point since we can validate that things are going to come up, that the data is valid, and then tear it back down without having to interrupt the users."
"It's supports Unix, Linux, all of the OS's. It's very stable software."
"If you have an idea of what you are doing, it's very flexible and very stable."
"The command-line interface is user-friendly and well documented in the reference guide."
"The feature that was most valuable was that we could restore one mailbox and we could do different backups for different databases."
"The initial setup is very easy."
"The tool's most valuable aspect is its ease of management. It was not complex. In terms of features, I can mention a couple of things. For example, if you need to restore a VM, you can do it with multiple streams in OpenText Data Protector, which is an advantage over Commvault, from what I've noticed, having worked with multiple tools. Another thing is the Oracle backups; configuring Oracle backups is much easier in OpenText Data Protector."
"Data Protector's GUI is the most useful feature."
"The stability of the product seems to be quite good."

Cons

"The problem with the backup product is that it's not very mature and you really need a specific use case to be able to use it effectively. It's hard to explain to our customers, especially our large customers, that the use case is so limited."
"I have experienced some issues sometimes during upgrades."
"They could iron out the licensing aspect of it, so we might be a bit quicker when implementing and starting to use it."
"The only issue that I observed was that depending on the number of virtual machines that are being replicated, you will have to provision the appropriate bandwidth for the link that the replicated systems will traverse."
"It is crucial for Zerto to collaborate closely with VMware in order to promptly test updates."
"Zerto gets most of the way there and would work for a smaller enterprise effectively, but for a larger enterprise, Veeam has capabilities that are beyond Zerto at this point."
"Certain areas were designed and work fine for VMware but are under development for Hyper-V. Eventually, all features will work for both platforms."
"This solution could be improved if it met all the requirements that we look for including supporting multiple operating systems. We would prefer to use one solution for DR and backup."
"I'm uncertain if it supports virtual machine backup and restoration. If they could enhance this aspect, they could gain more support from end users."
"I would like to see a better user interface in the next release."
"VMware backup integration and cloud recovery is lacking."
"We have so many specific technological cracks in Micro Focus, but we are not getting the features, facilities, or coordination between the global delivery centers and the R&D team that we need to express our ideas."
"VM backups needs to be improved. They need to make it similar to the way Veeam and Commvault are doing the virtual backups."
"In terms of what can be improved, I would say integrations with MongoDB. We use MongoDB and we need to go to scripts to do backups. We need more integrations."
"The downside of the flexibility on offer is if you over-configure it, it may fail to function as some configurations may not match."
"We faced some certification issues after we upgraded to version 10.2."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"There is a one-time cost for maintenance and support. We have a three-year contract that we will have to renew when those three years come up. There is also licensing on top of that for whatever product you are using it for."
"The pricing is very reasonable."
"It is very expensive. It is overpriced. No doubt. What held us up for many years from committing to buying it was always the cost. That's also why we only have 10 licenses."
"Zerto is very cost-effective. We get really great value for the cost of the service."
"We feel it is pretty cost-efficient. For the amount of protection that we get for Zerto, we feel that it is at an excellent price point, especially compared to some of the other vendors that were just backup solutions. For all that it does, we feel that the price is good."
"It works very well as a backup and recovery solution, with frequent recovery points. It's very good. But it's too pricey for us to use it as a backup solution for all of our clients. Not every customer needs recovery points every five seconds."
"I would like to see different service levels. They're good, but it still takes a lot of our budget in ops."
"We're getting our money's worth with Zerto."
"The pricing is around $3,000 to $5,000. The charge additionally for support and to scale."
"Pricing for Micro Focus Data Protector is reasonable."
"The product is cheaper than Commvault."
"The licensing structure provides cost savings to business."
"The pricing is acceptable for enterprise level companies, but it's not acceptable for small- and medium-sized businesses. Micro Focus Data Protector is not an enterprise level solution, and it should cover small- and medium-sized businesses with acceptable prices."
"We have many competitors who are pricing better, and we believe that our pricing is higher."
"The solution requires paying for a license."
"Avoid using many LTO drives; when using fewer drives, the price will be extremely good."
