Provides alerts regarding pending jobs, but the storage capacity is very low
I use the solution for backup and recovery. I map the data paths to the network. There is a client agent and a server agent. The client agent is added to the client PC, and the server agent is added to the server PC. We work for the pharma industry. We save the files that need to be converted to…

Efficient data recovery and replication features
There is a big change in Veritas. In the past, we could easily change servers or appliances and continue working by restoring the catalog. We could change servers from Linux to Linux or Linux to Solaris and perform catalog restores to continue working. But with the new version, we are forced to engage Veritas' professional services, which is too expensive. Sometimes, we've received quotes exceeding $100,000 for a catalog migration. This expense was unnecessary in the past. For instance, we used to install a new release of Linux and simply restore the catalog, and the system would function well. But with the latest version, it's no longer feasible. For instance, if we want to migrate from appliance 5030 to 5060 or even just 5050, we are compelled to engage Veritas consultants due to the intricate data manipulation involved. This additional expense is quite expensive. In the past, these devices didn't even exist, and we could easily restore the catalog, resulting in a fully functional system. However, the new version demands expensive expertise for such tasks, which I find unacceptable for our clients.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The initial setup is straightforward. It's not that complicated. Deployment took maybe about 15 minutes."
"The platform helps us with efficient QoreStor deduplication (DD) capabilities and configuration."
"If a job is pending, the solution communicates it to us through emails."
"The user interface is good."
"The interface is very user-friendly."
"Its dashboard is quite well done. When you log into the GUI, you can basically see everything you need to know. There is also the possibility to edit the view as you like, which is great."
"It has File and SQL backup, which is the main benefit for us."
"Having the web-based interface is important to us because we can access it from any computer in the network, rather than having it installed and available for use only on a specific one."
"The deduplication feature is useful. Deduplication and compression features are what I like about NetBackup."
"The solution is stable."
"The solution offers the hardware and the software at the same time."
"Veritas NetBackup Automatic Image Replication and CloudCatalyst features allow me to replicate deduped backup images from one site to a remote site, as well as duplicating deduped images to the Cloud (i.e. AWS S3, etc.)"
"Logs are very easy to read, parse, and use for diagnostics."
"It saves time for the backup needs of our organization."
"It is a good solution. It covers most of the applications."
"The most valuable feature is its stability."

Cons

"The storage capacity is very low."
"I would like to see the option of cloud-based management."
"There are certain issues with the product that we report to Quest, and we get offered a workaround instead of a fix. There could be better interaction with the development teams, perhaps in terms of transparency."
"The product’s SQL backup plugin needs improvement."
"There are command-line limitations. There is not a very strong possibility to work with the command line. The commands that are there are not that powerful, and you need to be very good at scripting, for example, in PowerShell or in Bash in case it is running on Linux systems. You need to combine a lot of commands together, and still, you will not get a great output that is presentable to others. You cannot work with it as easily."
"The interface can be improved. It should be more clear what features are available and make them easy to find."
"The stability of the solution is poor."
"In the next version, I would like to see support for the MongoDB database. As it is now, there is no component that works with it and we cannot back the data up using NetVault."
"The cost is expensive."
"The solution is not that stable because it has to be monitored and administered every day. The stability could be improved."
"The implementation process could be simplified to make it quicker."
"It needs support for Kernel-based Virtual Machines (KVMs)."
"Within their product lineup, they need to consolidate down to one product. Veritas doesn't have one product that does everything. So, Veritas can do everything, but you basically need to run two products. I would like them to combine all the capabilities into one release."
"They need to work on the GUI. It has been the same for the last 10 years."
"We had some issues with the hardware backup appliance."
"The only pain point we have with this solution is the cost. It's very expensive. In fact, it's so expensive we are looking for other platforms. We want to move away from it in order to save our organization costs."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"When we purchased four licenses, we were given a very good price. However, it is still on the high side when compared to some other vendors."
"The price of our 12-month contract is approximately $1,500 AUD ($1,100 USD)."
"The tool is expensive."
"Licensing was very expensive and did not scale well if needed to move between license models."
"The price of Veritas NetBackup is high, it should be reduced."
"Acceptable if you need to implement it for larger environments, e.g. over 1000 clients. For smaller setups it might be too expensive."
"Veritas Netbackup offers affordable licensing."
"Smaller virtualized environments will want to stick to a traditional licensing model if possible. It will likely be cheaper, but it is a pain to manage all the individual licenses for each client."
"If you have a source size of one terabyte then they will charge for a one terabyte license, although what is actually being stored is much less."
"We are very satisfied with the price of this solution."
"Annual licensing fee."
