Good for backups and is easy to troubleshoot
Pros and Cons
  • "The product is good for backups."
  • "The client caches and deduplication system have a few problems."

What is our primary use case?

Data backup is our primary usage of the solution.

What is most valuable?

I am impressed by the ease of troubleshooting due to the internal database. You can get a lot of information from the backup jobs and that is very useful. For example, the program has a very nice importer called Clientele Activity.

Sometimes when you run backups for products, you will get the information about the backups - some successful some unsuccessful. You also often get information about some clients who don't run any data backups. So from a troubleshooting point of view, it offers valuable information that you can work on.

What needs improvement?

There are some limitations on the backups and the databases so I think that needs a little improvement. The client caches and deduplication system have a few problems.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using EMC Avamar for 18 years now.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is stable as long as you are very careful when you shut down and start up. If you will do everything according to the rules, everything will be okay. But if you make a mistake or shut down the wrong way, or install something the wrong way, you will have some problems. The system is a little sensitive about things that are not done correctly. If you follow the rules, the system will pay you very well. If you do not follow the rules, you will have some troubles.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The program has something called RAIN, and RAIN is the head of the systems, that hosts computers that work together. This RAIN has some limitations on the number of nodes you can put it together to make something like the cloud computer for which something can be seen as a great computer. The second thing is that Avamar has many internal things checking the consistency of the data.

And from this point of view, you sometimes get some mutations on the performance miles and the composite. You can overcome this by using Data Domain. If you add the Data Domain to the system, then you'll see stuff that can be seen as a kind of management system by Avamar, stored back in the Data Domain. It's a beautiful component.

How are customer service and support?

Because I am the inspector at our company I simply call my global instructor or another linked instructor if I need something checked. So I've never used the technical team.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We used Omniverge for some time, but at that time the cost became too high so we switched to Avamar. If you look at the backup and database of Avamar, it stands out above the rest.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was complex and it was very hard to implement that in Avamar itself because there were about 500 pages you had to go through. It was a nightmare. It was 18 years ago so it will probably be easier now. I did the deployment myself but I can't remember how long that took.

What other advice do I have?

Before you start using this program, you must know that you can't do everything with Avamar. There are some limitations like the size of the database.

One lesson I've learned from working with Avamar is that you must follow the rules. Often people do not follow the rules for different products. Some products are very forgiving and you don't need to strictly follow the rules, but with Avamar, you have to follow the rules. You have to read the manual, you have to really know what you are doing, especially when you do the first implementation.

The product is good for backups but if you look at the analytics, I would like to say that there is a possibility to improve the caches or to do something with the application process on the clients' side, and back-ups for the bigger objects like the databases of the processing systems.

I rate this product 8.5. It could be nine, but it has a few limitations.

A very reliable back up with good technical support and excellent stability
Pros and Cons
  • "The backup is the solution's most valuable feature. It's very reliable."
  • "The configuration and expansion aspects of the solution need improvement. They're complicated and don't really integrate well."

What is our primary use case?

We primarily use the solution as a backup.

What is most valuable?

The backup is the solution's most valuable feature. It's very reliable.

What needs improvement?

The configuration and expansion aspects of the solution need improvement. They're complicated and don't really integrate well.

The solution requires a remote site application in a future release. I believe they are currently working on this.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the solution for six months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is very stable. It's really reliable.

How are customer service and technical support?

Technical support is very good.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is very complex.

What about the implementation team?

We handled the implementation ourselves.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We were lucky to receive the solution as part of a bundle. It was actually a relatively good price, but there are better solutions, like Veem. However, they can be expensive.

What other advice do I have?

We are using the on-premises deployment model of the solution.

I'd rate the solution eight out of ten.

Source based deduplication is the most attractive feature as it drastically reduces the backup window.
Pros and Cons
  • "Source based deduplication is the most attractive feature as it drastically reduces the backup window."
  • "Desktop-laptop backups and backup over the WAN needs lot of improvisation. For DTLT there must be a provision to push agents from the management console."

What is most valuable?

Source based deduplication is the most attractive feature as it drastically reduces the backup window.

How has it helped my organization?

I've helped several organizations reduce the backup window and they could spend time on optimizing other bits of IT infra.

What needs improvement?

Desktop-laptop backups and backup over the WAN needs lot of improvisation. For DTLT there must be a provision to push agents from the management console. Users must be able to browse data set of what to backup behind a WAN IP / firewall.

For how long have I used the solution?

3 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

With older OS versions like Microsoft 2003, there were a few issues. However, they have clearly mentioned that it is not supported.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Adding new nodes is an extremely difficult task. Took me nearly 28 hours for node addition and data rebalance.

How are customer service and technical support?

Eight out of 10, when I used to work. However, after Dell acquisition, I have no clue.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Ability to manage both DTLT and server backup using the same console, and reduced backup window and data footprint, were the major reasons for my customers to change.

How was the initial setup?

Initialization and management is very simple. Its a GUI based installation with clearly defined steps.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It is very expensive. It's a trust based licensing. So that's an ethical challenge.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

No.

What other advice do I have?

Have your inventory ready and priorities set. Make sure initial backup is taken during off-production hours as the solution works only on LAN.

A stable and highly scalable solution with great tech support and limitless licensing and hardware capabilities
Pros and Cons
  • "We are talking about a complete end-to-end solution which comes with its own hardware storage to back up the data on tape-less."
  • "The solution should improve its tape-connectivity features."

What is our primary use case?

The solution can be used for the backing up of all environments, including those which are virtual and involve databases and applications.

What is most valuable?

We are talking about a complete end-to-end solution which comes with its own hardware storage to back up the data on tape-less. It should be on desk and desks solution, which comes with Power Protect and is called data domain. It offers a very small footprint for long term, backup retention, in the realm of 55 times a single duplication ratio. This means that if a person backs up something on one, he will have one petabyte of storage, which can store up to five petabyte of backup copies. This combination makes Dell EMC one of the most perfect solutions available.

What needs improvement?

Avamar does not offer the tape-out, meaning that what a person backs up can only be kept on a disc based appliance, one which is supplied by Avamar. The tape lacks connectivity, which means that if a customer wishes to take tape-out, Avamar is not a fit. He must look for a networker which offers up to tape. The solution should improve its tape-connectivity features.

For how long have I used the solution?

As we have been serving as the Dell EMC legacy partners since before Dell took over, our company has been dealing with Avamar since the get go, back in 2014.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is certainly stable and comprises 70 percent of the market share.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is highly scalable. Both the licensing and hardware capabilities are without limit. The storage box can be scaled in petabytes.

How are customer service and support?

As, generally speaking, Dell EMC is an enterprise solution company, its technical support is always good.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup used to be complex, but has since become much easier, more user friendly and faster.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The solution is not expensive for the value one gets. The most expensive thing involves one's data. Should a person's data be compromised, he would be willing to pay a million dollars to retrieve it. This makes the payment of an additional premium for its protection worthwhile.

The licensing capabilities are limitless.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

The main difference between Avamar and Networker involves the tape-out. Generally speaking, our customers have compliance policies to keep the tapes out, which is why we mostly recommend Networker. As such, most of my installations are on Networker, not Avamar.

What other advice do I have?

I consider the solution to be most comprehensive in all respects. It has an understanding of most of the vendor's applications.

I rate Dell EMC Avamar as an eight out of ten.

Quick and easy to set up with good scalability potential
Pros and Cons
  • "We've found the product to be stable."
  • "It would be helpful if the product offered more integration potential."

What is most valuable?

The solution is easy to use.

We've found the product to be stable.

The scalability is there if a company needs to expand it out.

The initial setup is easy and the deployment is fast.

What needs improvement?

The solution should offer a better data domain.

It would be helpful if the product offered more integration potential.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've dealt with the solution for three or four years at this point. It's been a while.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is stable. there are no bugs or glitches. It doesn't crash or freeze. The performance is quite good.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability potential is good. If you are a company that needs to scale, you can do so with this product.

We do not have a lot of customers using this solution. Only maybe five to six percent of our customer base uses it.

How are customer service and technical support?

The technical support is quite good. they are helpful and responsive and we are satisfied with the level of support they provide.

How was the initial setup?

We did not find the initial setup to be overly complex. It's pretty straightforward.

The deployment is fast. You can have everything up and running in three to four hours.

We have four to five people on staff that can handle deployment and maintenance duties.

What about the implementation team?

I handled the implementation myself. I did not need the help of an implementor or consultant. I can do it alone, in-house.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

At this time, we do not pay any licenses to Dell.

What other advice do I have?

We don't have a lot of customers that use the product, however, we are recommending it often.

Our customers are using the latest version of the product, however, I can't speak to the exact version number.

On a scale from one to ten, I'd rate the solution at a seven.

I'd recommend the solution to other users and companies. It's worked well for a few of our customers.

A stable and scalable solution that's always improving
Pros and Cons
  • "The source site replication feature is valuable."
  • "It would be better if we could integrate easily with other platforms."

What is our primary use case?

In a data center, the entire workloads are virtualized, and they are backing up the content, and sometimes because of bandwidth, operations need to be backed up quickly. In that kind of scenario, this source site replication is very supportive. Avamar evaluates the data that's already backed up, and only the chain blocks can be transferred via the network. There won't be any heavy network traffic, and the time it takes to backup is quick and within the window.

On the client-side, we can also backup clients with Avamar. These days with the pandemic, most of them work from home, and we're using less network bandwidth to backup end user transfers.

What is most valuable?

The source site replication feature is valuable.

What needs improvement?

It would be better if we could integrate easily with other platforms. I would like to see better integration with VMware vCenter. We normally integrate Avamar with VMware vCenter Server and virtualize Avamar within the VM. Once, we wanted to backup only a few VMs within the vCenter, without integrating it to the vCenter. But we come across some problems. Without adding the vCenter directly, there was some difficulty in adding the VMs. When we replaced more clients in the OS, this problem was solved.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Dell EMC Avamar for three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Dell EMC Avamar is stable so far. As we have worked with software engineers trained to use this product, they can configure and provide support on their own.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Dell EMC Avamar is a scalable solution.

How are customer service and technical support?

Support is okay. We don't use it frequently as our engineers can manage well. Only when they can't handle a problem, they call support. We also use technical sites and the web portal, and these help our engineers capably handle day to day requirements.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup isn't complex. Because the engineers are trained, they're familiar with the product and can do this implementation.

The implementation time depends on the data center. The issues we face are mainly on the network. For example, sometimes, their policies on implementing the communication between the servers lead to some downtime. Other than that, we can implement Dell EMC Avamar between two-three days.

What about the implementation team?

We implemented Dell EMC Avamar ourselves, in-house.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It was very expensive before, but after integrating it with Dell EMC Avamar Data Protection suite licensing, we are getting better discounts.

What other advice do I have?

I always see improvements on the Avamar side, and we are happy with that.

On a scale from one to ten, I would give Dell EMC Avamar a ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Good with endpoint backups, but the interface is not user-friendly and the technology is outdated
Pros and Cons
  • "Dell EMC Avamar is very good with endpoint backups."
  • "The UI is not easy to use. There are other products such as Veeam that are easy to use for the end-user which is why they are moving away from Avamar or Networker."

What is our primary use case?

We are system integrators. We resell, we deploy, and we support our clients.

What is most valuable?

Dell EMC Avamar is very good with endpoint backups.

What needs improvement?

This solution is approximately 10 to 20 years old. The technology behind it is very good but the trends are increasing and Avamar and NetWorkers are outdated.

They brought in vProtect solutions, called it PPDM, and rebranded it.

In my opinion, they should destroy all of their products and create them from scratch.

The technology is behind and they have millions of codes. I think that it should be recreated or they should hire another backup and archive company.

The UI is not easy to use. There are other products such as Veeam that are easy to use for the end-user, which is why they are moving away from Avamar or Networker.

Recently, they recreated the HTML 5 interface, and it has abilities but it is not mature yet.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Dell EMC Avamar for almost one year.

How are customer service and technical support?

The technical support was great.

I created a ticket and it was resolved.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Previously, I used Acronis, Veeam, and Commvault.

Most use Veeam because it's a new product with cloud capabilities and the interface is easy to use.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

When it comes to competition the price is not what is important, it's not the problem.

What other advice do I have?

Our company is competent in Dell products. My colleagues and I have over ten years of experience with NetWorker and Avamar.

I used to be an assistant consultant. Now, I'm working as a solution architect. I'm a bit far away from technical solutions.

I would rate this solution a five out of ten.
