The primary use case of this solution was for projects to backup customer laptops for the application capabilities.
Architecte Backup at a comms service provider with 10,001+ employees
A stable solution, providing a simple setup procedure, but lacks troubleshooting capabilities
Pros and Cons
- "The installation of the solution is easy."
- "When we used the solution, it was still new, and so the customer service/technical support was not the best."
What is our primary use case?
What needs improvement?
The product could be easier to troubleshoot. When I had a problem with the software, I invested a lot of time to find out what the problem was. Once I found the problem, I realized that it was a simple solution, but there were no helpful indications.
As an example, with Avamar, you have a different storage node and if one of these nodes had a problem with an NTP server and there was a different time on the node, nothing would work. Finding the solution to this problem involved many steps, which was not easy to determine.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using the solution for 5 or 6 years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The solution is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The solution is scalable, but I prefer a solution like NetBackup when I am networking.
How are customer service and support?
When we used the solution, it was still new, and so the customer service/technical support was not the best.
How was the initial setup?
The installation of the solution is easy.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The cost of the solution is very expensive.
What other advice do I have?
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

Storage Administrator at a hospitality company with 1,001-5,000 employees
An easy initial setup with good duplication and good stability
Pros and Cons
- "The initial setup is easy."
- "It would be helpful if there was cloud support."
What is our primary use case?
We primarily use the solution for virtual infrastructure.
What is most valuable?
The duplication is the solution's most valuable aspect.
The initial setup is easy.
What needs improvement?
The solution is actually moving over to a new PowerProtect solution. I'm not sure, in terms of the roadmap, how long they'll have Avamar and NetWorker as they have now launched a new PowerProtect backup solution.
Therefore, the concern really is what the future will be with another product. Will we have to migrate, for example, and will it be easy or hard to do so?
It would be helpful if there was cloud support.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've been using the solution for about eight years now. It's been a while.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
We've been happy with the stability. It doesn't crash or freeze. It's not buggy. It's been good.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The scalability is limited right now. A company shouldn't expect to be able to expand it too much. That may be just the case in general for the kind of software it is.
We typically work to size accordingly to avoid having to make upgrades.
How are customer service and technical support?
The support is okay. They are pretty knowledgable and prompt. I'd rate them seven out of ten overall. We're mostly satisfied with their level of service.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We actually used to use Veritas. We got rid of Veritas Symantec NetBackup because it couldn't do all the deduplication we needed and didn't have all of the features that Avamar has. The support was also very bad. We were happy to switch to something else.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup is not complex. Implementation is pretty straightforward.
What about the implementation team?
We had Dell assist us a bit in the implementation process.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
I'm not sure how to calculate the cost. It's a hard question to answer. I do know that we pay for support upfront for five years.
I'm not sure how to compare costs, however, I can say that based on what we're seeing we get very good deduplication rates with the data domain on the backend.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
We did briefly look at another solution, however, we decided not to move forward with it.
What other advice do I have?
We're currently just customers with Dell. We don't have a business relationship with them.
I'm not sure if I would recommend the solution as there's a new solution that will be replacing it. However, it's not a bad solution as it stands.
Overall, I'd rate the solution eight out of ten. It's a pretty decent product.

Works at a financial services firm with 10,001+ employees
Good image and file backup capabilities, but technical support should be more knowledgeable
Pros and Cons
- "The most valuable features are image backups and file backups."
- "Technical support should be more knowledgeable."
What is our primary use case?
We use this product for Windows and Linux servers, and we have both file and database backups stored on them. We use them at smaller sites, which are small offices that are located around the world.
What is most valuable?
The most valuable features are image backups and file backups.
Image backups are very good to use, since they don´t require a backup agent.
What needs improvement?
Technical support should be more knowledgeable.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using Dell EMC Avamar for more than 10 years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The newest version is not very stable, which is something that should be improved.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
We have perhaps 70 clients/server and have not tried to scale beyond that. We have about 40 users in total and do not plan to increase our usage at this time.
How are customer service and technical support?
The quality of technical support varies. Sometimes they are very good, and sometimes they are not. They should be faster and more knowledgeable.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We also use Dell EMC NetWorker.
How was the initial setup?
I was not involved in the initial setup but from what I understand, it's pretty simple.
What about the implementation team?
There are five of us in the technical team who deploy and maintain our solutions.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The price of this product should be cheaper.
What other advice do I have?
This is a product that I can recommend for small sites without anything special.
I would rate this solution a seven out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

Principal Architect at a computer software company with 1,001-5,000 employees
Provides ease of enabling a server in a DR location, but needs improvement in backing up very large objects
Pros and Cons
- "The data reduction feature and the ease of enabling a server in a DR location are the most valuable."
- "Its ability to back up very large objects can be improved. In terms of new features, they can include the ability to use cloud services, like S3, more natively."
What is our primary use case?
It was initially used for remote office, branch office backups, but eventually, it started to be used for small and large data centers.
What is most valuable?
The data reduction feature and the ease of enabling a server in a DR location are the most valuable.
What needs improvement?
Its ability to back up very large objects can be improved. In terms of new features, they can include the ability to use cloud services, like S3, more natively.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using this solution for 15 years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
It has good stability.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
It has good scalability, which is a good thing for VMware infrastructures. I see it mostly being used in midsize environments or focused on VMware infrastructure backups. It does a great job there. The negative of this solution is that it certainly wouldn't cover a super large enterprise where they have other tool needs. You probably won't use it for the entire data center or for large Oracle or SQL backups.
How are customer service and technical support?
I don't interact with them a lot. I would summarize them as being average.
How was the initial setup?
Initially, it was pretty complex to install, but it got easier over the years. It is still not the easiest of all tools to install. It certainly is not as easy to install as Veeam. It is probably comparable to a Commvault in terms of installation difficulty.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Licensing was generally on a per VM or terabyte basis. They changed their licensing model a couple of times and turned it into socket-based licensing, which is an improvement in their licensing model.
What other advice do I have?
I would rate Dell EMC Avamar a six out of ten.

IT Manager at a manufacturing company with 1,001-5,000 employees
Easy to use with good performance and stability
Pros and Cons
- "The installation process is pretty straightforward."
- "The solution could be a bit easier to use in the sense that they need to make it simpler to backup products and restore items."
What is our primary use case?
We primarily use the solution as a backup. Avamar is used to back up our production workloads. Production workloads include Oracle, EBS, SharePoint, file and print service, other application services.
What is most valuable?
The stability is good. We have found that the performance is excellent.
The product is easy to use.
The installation process is pretty straightforward.
What needs improvement?
The solution could be a bit easier to use in the sense that they need to make it simpler to backup products and restore items.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've been using the solution for more than three years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The solution is very stable and the performance is reliable. There are no bugs or glitches. It doesn't crash or freeze. It's reliable.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Whether or not we will scale the solution depends on the business. If we have a requirement to do so, then definitely we'll expand it. If there will be year-over-year growth and if it will be 10%, we're likely to expand and will need to scale.
If you need to add more capacity, you will need to pay for it.
How was the initial setup?
The installation process is straightforward. That said, it would require an engineer from Dell to do it. We ourselves cannot do it. We don't have the knowledge necessary.
We needed two engineers to handle deployment.
Installation was quite fast. It took about four to five hours. After that, the configuration and other policies, that took about two days.
What about the implementation team?
We had Dell assist us with the implementation process.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
This is a capacity-based license, it's a one-time payment.
In order to increase capacity, you need to pay more. You also can expect more maintenance.
The pricing of the product seems to be less expensive than other options, however, I can't speak to the exact cost of the product.
What other advice do I have?
I'd rate the solution at an eight out of ten. We're quite happy with its capabilities.
This product is for production users. We do not backup user backups; it's only for the production workload.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

How are customer service and technical support?
The technical support from EMC is quite good.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

All of these are specialty tools and from my point of view, all of them are good. For the needs of my organization, EMC Avamar is the preferred option.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup is of average difficulty. It is not very easy and not very complex.

On-premises
