Simple and easy to use, and has good probe server and reporting features
Pros and Cons
  • "The features we found most valuable in ManageEngine OpManager are the probe server and reporting because they're pretty good features."
  • "What I'd like ManageEngine OpManager to improve on is artificial intelligence. In particular, the machine learning feature should be integrated with the sensor flow. Doing this will give leverage, especially when you look at other products such as the Cisco DNA Center. When a switch goes down, I should be able to build on the correlation of other physical devices it's connected to so that I can integrate that with my CA CMDB. The ManageEngine OpManager team needs to draw a long-term roadmap where that feature becomes an integral part of the solution because right now, machine learning in ManageEngine OpManager is a long process. The solution doesn't have MLS search and I want to see ML being developed and applied for CA CMDB to greatly reduce the burden of tying everything. For example, if I have a data center switch that goes down now, I should know what server it's connected to, and when that switch goes down at twenty-four ports, I would get twenty-four alerts for different devices plugged in. I should be able to make a correlation that the major problem lies in the switch and not with the twenty-four elements connected to that switch. That is where machine learning should come into play and the ManageEngine OpManager AI should indicate "This is where the root of your problem is." It could be difficult, but this is a feature that should be improved or added to the solution."

What is most valuable?

The features we found most valuable in ManageEngine OpManager are the probe server and reporting because they're pretty good features.

What needs improvement?

What I'd like ManageEngine OpManager to improve on is artificial intelligence.

That is where machine learning should come into play and the ManageEngine OpManager AI should indicate "This is where the root of your problem is."  It could be difficult, but this is a feature that should be improved or added to the solution.

What I'd like to see in the next version of ManageEngine OpManager is for the machine learning and AI to be tied with the correlation engine because, at the moment, the existing correlation is lacking in terms of contextual awareness. Contextual awareness has to be more customized so that the operator or the person building or customizing the tool should have the flexibility to tie it with the CA CMDB application and the underlying inventory. This way, ManageEngine OpManager becomes more of a straightforward, next-generation solution concerning monitoring. For example, another player like New Relic has an application management module that's far ahead, but it's still lagging and would still need to catch up in terms of managing needs.

ManageEngine OpManager has integrations through APIs, but still needs further enhancement because there are still certain applications that would take hits, so the level of contextual awareness needs to be built on more, and that takes time.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using ManageEngine OpManager for about one year now.

How are customer service and support?

I found the support for ManageEngine OpManager fantastic. I've called the support team several times, and the team always came back to me immediately. There wasn't any delay with the response, and whenever there was a feature that my company felt was missing in ManageEngine OpManager, the product engineering team would include that in the roadmap. The team also indicated other features still being worked on and what has been worked on. My interaction with the ManageEngine OpManager support team has been good so far. There's no doubt about it.

Presale, after-sales, and whenever there's an issue, I would rate the support provided by the product engineers of ManageEngine OpManager as five out of five. I would recommend the solution in terms of the support provided because, in comparison with other products, the support team listens to the customers. It's been a nice experience for me, so far.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

My company has been comparing products and found out that it's better to stick with the existing product, ManageEngine OpManager, instead of going with another because now the team knows about the issues and downsides and how to address those.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup for ManageEngine OpManager was very simple. It was very, very easy. On a scale of one to five, with five being very easy and one being very difficult, my rating for the setup is four out of five.

What was our ROI?

Concerning the ROI from ManageEngine OpManager, we're very happy and satisfied because we didn't have to pay for additional overheads, particularly because we now don't need that many admins, so we were able to save. We're able to run the show with just three operators.

On a scale of one to five, with one being the worst and five being the best, I would rate the ROI we get from ManageEngine OpManager as four out of five.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Pricing for ManageEngine OpManager depends on the number of nodes you onboard and whatever pricing is reflected on the ManageEngine portal which offers discounts from ten percent to fifteen percent. It purely depends on the sales volume and the negotiation.

In my organization, there are about one thousand two hundred nodes which cost around $29,000 per year. There's no additional support fee or maintenance fee from ManageEngine OpManager.

Pricing for the solution is highly competitive and I would rate it five out of five. ManageEngine OpManager is one of the most competitive options out there.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I did a small POC on SolarWinds, and unfortunately, the supply chain code got hacked and that impacted other SolarWinds products a lot. SolarWinds took a beating, and if that hack didn't happen and there wasn't much impact on other product lines, SolarWinds would be the clear winner over ManageEngine OpManager. Price-wise and support-wise, both solutions are good, but because of the hack, there is a security concern with SolarWinds, and this was a major reason to push back on SolarWinds, otherwise, my company would have gone with that solution.

I also compared ScienceLogic with ManageEngine OpManager, and though ScienceLogic has its engine, the engine fails whenever I try to build custom reports that my customers need. In ManageEngine OpManager, on the other hand, the process is simple. You just export it to a CSV format and you can do whatever you want with your other tools, so it's very easy, but in ScienceLogic, doing it would take a lot of time because of the connectors.

ManageEngine OpManager works better than other solutions because you don't need to be a guru to do simple tasks on it.

What other advice do I have?

I'm currently using ManageEngine OpManager.

Within my organization, thirty people use ManageEngine OpManager daily. The solution is being supported 24 x 7.

In terms of maintenance, a stable code is released every six months, so my team has to go back and plan it accordingly, which means keeping all the servers redundant. During the design process itself, the ManageEngine OpManager team did indicate that every quarter, certain packages would be released because the solution is dependent on Java and other frameworks, so it needs to be patched accordingly. Whenever a new patch is released, or there's a major code release at the design level, you need to keep servers more redundant, so you won't run into any issues, and this has helped my company reduce downtime. The monitoring has been always available and ManageEngine OpManager has never gone down. Only one staff is required for its maintenance.

My advice to others looking into implementing the solution is that if you're a legacy customer and you have budget constraints, ManageEngine OpManager is the way to go because it's a very simple solution for deployment, monitoring, and device availability. Though other competitors have advanced features, if I'm not using those features, then it doesn't matter. I'll be better of with ManageEngine OpManager because it's simple to use.

My rating for ManageEngine OpManager is eight out of ten.

My company is a customer of ManageEngine OpManager, not a partner.

Easy to set up and reliable but there are customization challenges
Pros and Cons
  • "The integration with the firewall monitoring, the security monitoring, is great."
  • "We had some stability issues at the outset that have since been resolved."

What is our primary use case?

We primarily use the solution for monitoring servers, networks, and security.

How has it helped my organization?

We run weekly and monthly reports to provide exceptions. And yeah, it's helped our organization remediate problems proactively.

What is most valuable?

The integration with the firewall monitoring, the security monitoring, is great.

The setup process is simple.

It is scalable.

It is stable and reliable.

What needs improvement?

Nothing at this stage needs to be improved.

The pricing is quite high. In terms of the value, it is expensive.

We had quite a few challenges with customizing many of the monitors. Monitor customization was not that easy. It'd take quite a bit of work.

We had some stability issues at the outset that have since been resolved.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the solution for two years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It was very unstable to start with for about seven months. That said, it was determined that was a memory-related problem. After the memory-related problem was resolved, it became more stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution can scale well.

We have 15 people on the solution currently.

How are customer service and support?

We've dealt with support in the past, and they were helpful and responsive.

We had a few challenges where issues went backward and forward a few times. We explained the problem, yet they wouldn't address their problem directly. They would move around the problem. That went on over a period of a month. It took a long time to resolve the problem since it wasn't understood exactly where the issue was.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I also use SolarWinds.

We used to use WhatsApp Gold. We switched from that based on the look and feel of the product. The customer preferred the look and feel of ManageEngine to WhatsApp Gold.

How was the initial setup?

In terms of deployment, it's a fairly straightforward initial discovery process.

We had so many modules, including the firewall monitor, et cetera. It was deployed over several months. It took about three months.

It is not difficult to maintain the solution.

What about the implementation team?

We used third parties and integrators during the installation process.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It is a pricey solution. However, I don't directly deal with pricing.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We did not evaluate other options before moving to this product.

What other advice do I have?

I'm not sure which version of the solution we're using. It's likely the latest update.

Based on the high cost, I'd rate the solution six out of ten.

I don't know if I would recommend it. I would be at 50-50 on recommending it. If you're looking for specific features, then I would recommend it. However, I work with a lot of monitoring products, including SolarWinds and WhatsApp Gold, and I would say your functionality and value would be about 50%. It really depends on what you want to use it for. If I were to use it as straight monitoring, then just note up and down, I would say there are much cheaper options. If you want to use some of the functionality with the firewall analyzer, and NetFlow integration, then it might be a bit more valuable to you. Still, as an overall product, you'd probably prefer SolarWinds over ManageEngine.

For us, it's taken a long time to try to get the stability of the product. Now that we've got stability, it's still taking a long time to get the level of reporting out that we require. It's just slow progress around resolving problems, and maybe that's an integrated problem. I'm not sure. The integrator says that some of it is a vendor-related problem. I see value in certain areas, however, overall, there are better solutions.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

What is our primary use case?

We use the solution for network and server monitoring. We are using the product for basic functionalities. We use it to monitor and check whether there are any issues in the environment.

What is most valuable?

The tool is useful for SNMP monitoring.

What needs improvement?

The product has only basic functionalities. It is not like SolarWinds. The data provided by the tool is not accurate. SolarWinds is more accurate.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the solution for more than eight years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The tool is not that stable. I rate the stability a five out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We are able to scale the product according to our growth. I rate the scalability a ten out of ten. We have more than 1000 branches.

How are customer service and support?

The customer support is satisfactory.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

How was the initial setup?

The solution was very easy to install. We were using Microsoft DB. It took some time. We can implement the product in a week. We need one person to deploy the tool.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing was okay. However, it has been increasing a lot lately. The product is not worth the money.

What other advice do I have?

Overall, I rate the solution an eight out of ten.

Easy to use, easy to deploy, and good support
    Pros and Cons
    • "It is easy to use and deploy."
    • "We have been facing an issue since last year when a lot of our users started to work from home through their mobiles or computers. We are having trouble reaching these devices. We are now planning to publish our instance to the cloud so that we can reach these devices. Its performance should be improved in terms of the discovery of the devices. I would like to feel confident with the discovery that this solution does. For example, on my dashboard, I would like to be able to view a list of all devices seen on a specific server. At present, it is difficult to find such information. This would be an excellent feature to have."

What is our primary use case?

We are mainly using it for Windows operating systems.

    What is most valuable?

It is easy to use and deploy.

    What needs improvement?

We have been facing an issue since last year when a lot of our users started to work from home through their mobiles or computers.

This would be an excellent feature to have.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using this solution for around 18 months.

How are customer service and technical support?

I don't have direct access to their technical support. However, I am aware of some of the tickets that our clients have raised, and they seem to provide information in an easy way. Their technical support is good.

    How was the initial setup?

I was not a part of the deployment process, but based on what I know, it was easy to deploy.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We had evaluated other products, and we decided to go for OpManager because of its ease of use and cost.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend this solution. I feel comfortable working with it.

I would rate ManageEngine OpManager a nine out of ten.

Rich and interactive dashboard and really easy to configure
    Pros and Cons
    • "The setup was easy."
    • "The main area for improvement for ManageEngine OpManager is its performance."

What is our primary use case?

Our primary use case is securing the appliance. I look after security compliance within my organization.

How has it helped my organization?

The reason we are still using it, is that so far, we are happy with the overall solution.

    What is most valuable?

The tool is user-friendly which is the number one thing I love about it. The feedback that I've received from the team, it's user-friendly. The dashboard is very rich and very interactive. The UI is very interactive. It's easy to set up and configure. These are the top three features I liked in this solution.

    What needs improvement?

When there are so many solutions, with that case improvement, it's extra developing an emerging market.  Sophos is one of the products the team recently experienced.

Unfortunately, we had a bad experience with Sophos EndPoint Central because the tool did not work as expected. It actually interfered. It hampered our production environment. So, we were not happy with the solution and had to roll back all of the Sophos agents we had installed in our environment.

Because of the security and overall performance issue, the tool did not work as expected. So, there were a lot of complications with the tool.

The main area for improvement for ManageEngine OpManager is its performance. The team is looking for a network monitoring and management solution that is reliable and does not interfere with their production environment.

For how long have I used the solution?

It has been seven to eight months because we recently procured it. It's a SaaS solution, so it's a cloud-based product.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I would rate the stability a ten out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I would rate the scalability an eight out of ten. There are over thousand end users using this solution. We use it on a daily basis.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We have our own solutions, which we use for our in-house and some other third-party solutions.

    How was the initial setup?

The setup was easy. When it comes to setup with Sophos, the setup is easy. Quite straightforward. But when it comes to actually managing or monitoring the solution, the policies, so the worst part of the product is Sophos abruptly or suddenly changes its policies. It does a lot of things in the background, and the administrator is not at all aware of it. So, it becomes very difficult for the administrator to troubleshoot the exact issue that probably got caused because of Sophos. So, the management of Sophos is difficult.

The deployment took a couple of days.

    What about the implementation team?

The deployment was done in-house. Only two people are required for the deployment process. They were network admins.

We have a dedicated team for maintenance.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I would rate the pricing a seven out of ten, where one is low and ten is high price.

It is not really expensive; it is nominal licensing.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We were looking at the other competitors in the market. Trend Micro is a very strong contender when it comes to endpoint security. So that's the reason our organization decided to proceed with Trend Micro, or we will be proceeding with Trend Micro from next year.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend using the solution. I would rate the solution a nine out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Simple to use with good monitoring and excellent reliability
    Pros and Cons
    • "The traffic monitoring and the traffic analysis are great."
    • "Some of our customers have been asking that OpManager have a feature to monitor the operating system, however, I tell them that Endpoint Central is doing that. You can buy endpoints and then OpManager, and they integrate between them, and everything is okay."

What is our primary use case?

The primary use is for network infrastructure monitoring, however, there are three editions. There is the professional, there is the enterprise, and there is the OpManager Plus. Personally, I prefer the OpManager Plus since it monitors everything including network routers, switches, servers, virtual machines, virtual machine hosts, storage, and firewalls, and all-in-one solution. I generally prefer OpManager Plus edition.

How has it helped my organization?

We like that now we can monitor the entire infrastructure, servers, temperature applications, and house for virtual machines. It's all-encompassing monitoring. We can watch everything that is connected to the network.

    What is most valuable?

It's much simpler to use this solution than the regular version. With the regular version, you have to do an add-on for everything. If you want to monitor a database, you have to buy an add-on for the application. If you want to monitor a firewall, you need a license for firewalls.

The traffic monitoring and the traffic analysis are great. The monitoring of servers that host services is very important since you can see a problem before it becomes a problem. Monitoring the firewall screen is a good way of preventing breaches. Also, monitoring the storage rather than switching from screen to screen to my monitor the storage has been very useful. I monitor the infrastructure and from one screen, you can see every problem for everything that is connected to your network.

    What needs improvement?

Some of our customers have been asking that OpManager have a feature to monitor the operating system, however, I tell them that Endpoint Central is doing that. You can buy endpoints and then OpManager, and they integrate between them, and everything is okay. I don't really have another feature to add.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the solution for eight to ten years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability is ten out of ten. The solution never fails.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

OpManager Enterprise has unlimited scalability. OpManager Plus goes to only 1000 devices in the application. So OpManager Enterprise has limitless scalability. OpManager Plus is limited to 1000.

    How was the initial setup?

The setup is straightforward. The only thing that takes time is registering every device that is in the network. For every switch, you need to provide its credentials. For every router, the same. So every device needs to be enrolled in the platform. That takes some manual labor, especially if there are different accounts for each device. You have to enroll them, create the keys, create the credentials, then enroll them.

Installing the solution takes two to three hours. Configuring the solution and implementing every device in a network can take from days to maybe months. It depends on the number of devices and the complexity of the architecture where it is installed.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I'd rate the pricing six out of ten.

I've seen other networks like Lansweeper and other solutions that provide network monitoring, and the prices are similar.

There can be add-ons involved. Add-ons depends on the license of OpManager. If you have OpManager Plus, you have very few add-ons. If you have OpManager Enterprise, you need an add-on for everything you want to monitor, from database, application, servers, VM host, et cetera.

What other advice do I have?

I'm not sure which version of the solution I'm on.

It is a good return on investment. It is a workload simplified. You can see everything on the screen. You get reports and secure your network, and also get notified if something is wrong or something might happen.

I'd rate the solution nine out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

    On-premises

Enables the defining of thresholds, monitor, and alarm with multiple severities per monitor

    What is most valuable?

The most valuable features of this product would be the ability to define thresholds, monitor, and alarm. Having the ability to set multiple severities per monitor allows for a proactive environment.

How has it helped my organization?

OpManager was able to provide graphs associating trending for disk growth and other hardware/network utilization.

    What needs improvement?

The new user interface of 12.x is a major change from the legacy UI of 11.x and Fluid UI. The UI changes look nice and 12.x is geared towards mobility, but finding its settings can be challenging. I have found many inconsistencies between switching back and forth between the the legacy UI and Fluid UI as far as settings changing.

Also, every time I perform a version upgrade, something breaks.

I have also stumbled across many bugs, leading me to think that the quality control is lacking.

There is a big lack of documentation and feature requests rarely happen.

The OpManager community is very sparse on the ME forums as well.

A simpler backup solution would be nice. Especially one that doesn't require downtime. I had to script my own daily scheduled task which would run the backup script and rename the file by date and dump it into a folder that is backed up to tape. Their ADSelfService Plus product is great with backups and there is obviously a disconnect between teams if they can't share code to make backups easier.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have used this solution for approximately five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Stability issues were rare, but did happen. They were usually remediated quickly by ME OpManager support.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

My experience with scaling OpManager is minimal. However, when scaling out a VM environment, I have experienced issues requiring the VM hosts to be rediscovered, VMs removed from OpManager and re-discovered, and in some cases an entire VM host removed and re-added.

How are customer service and technical support?

Tech support was good, however with their California time zone, not having 24/7 coverage is very disappointing, especially since any major changes were outside of normal business hours.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have used Nagios, Cacti, Zabbix, OpenNMS, and PRTG. I worked for a company which had an instance of OpManager (9.x). It just worked and I fell in love with the workflow. Adding devices was a breeze and the trend data was simple to pull up and analyze, not to mention reporting features.

    How was the initial setup?

The initial setup of OpManager is very easy and straightforward. Unlike some competitors, especially on the Linux side, the wizard will guide you through your install and you'll be up and running in minutes. OpManager has a self-contained web server and SQL server that make life easy.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Pricing can be a bit high, but if you take advantage of the expertise of the developers and support like I did, it'll pay for itself. Also, if you have other ManageEngine products, they will provide additional discounts.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I did evaluate Nagios and Cacti (the combination), but being the only Linux guru at the time, no one was really on board with the maintenance and support for the Open Source solutions.
