Seamlessly combines Internet and MPLS
In managing a retail network with over a hundred branches, we moved from MPLS to Citrix SD-WAN for cost savings and flexibility. Citrix seamlessly combines Internet and MPLS, enabling us to eliminate MPLS. This shift lets us use different Internet providers at each branch while maintaining…

Administration is very flexible for devices and policies; everything is in a single portal
In some areas, compared to other SD-WANs, Prisma SD-WAN has fewer features. First of all, sometimes, if one device is down, the other device will not come up. When there are two devices and we have created HA, that means one device gets a priority of 100 and the other is given 90. The 100 priority is active and the 90 is the backup. In some cases, the primary device is down, but the secondary device is not becoming active. In that case, we have to reboot the devices, causing an outage. I would also like to see improvement in the product training for customers. Palo Alto has not initiated very much training but they have to do so because this is a new product. If you have experience in a legacy environment, and you are moving to Prisma SD-WAN, you don't have a training framework. That is one of the disadvantages. Although they have a training portal, it is a read-only platform. They need training for engineers so that engineers can work very quickly and properly. And with software upgrades, sometimes the device does not come up and we have to do a manual restart. It doesn't happen every time, maybe one or two times out of 100. It's minimal but it does happen.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"They have a zero downtime failover mechanism, where, when there's a link failure or a link weakness, or bad link conditions, they provide the ability to fail back seamlessly."
"The most valuable feature of Citrix SD-WAN is customization. You are able to customize the solution to your needs."
"It allows us to use additional VPNs, offering more options compared to other VPN solutions."
"Downtime for branch offices is now almost zero. We have 100% real-time visibility into all of our lines. MPLS links have been replaced with lower-cost links, saving a larger percentage of line costs. Overall, I see SD-WAN as a must. And the Citrix SD-WAN product has delivered on expectations and exceeded them. (With later firmware updates we now have good firewall capabilities in the product too)."
"The best feature is the backup capability, where all of the users' computers are tied into a central data repository."
"The solution is brilliant, the way it calculates its paths and trails is great."
"The tool is quite cost-effective because it replaces the need for MPLS, which is a bit expensive...Citrix SD-WAN doesn't need much maintenance."
"The VPN and the load balancing are the most valuable features."
"When it comes to supporting large, complex, network architectures, it's a very simple architecture. The main component is the fabric. It's very easy to troubleshoot if there is an issue happening in the underlying network."
"The product provides efficient stability, security, and reliability features."
"It is flexible to use the internet connection via local breakouts without going to data centers."
"I like the link monitoring and analytics. These are the features that set Prisma apart from other products. Prisma works well with large, complex networks. One of my clients is a top bank in the United States, and Prisma has performed well for that customer."
"Prisma's analytics provide a lot of valuable data. I like the internet health chart that shows latency, dropped packets, MOS for data quality, etc. It also runs a continuous speed test in the background. I've used it multiple times to troubleshoot internet connections when the service provider has attempted to claim nothing is wrong with the circuit. It gives me data to send them showing we're not getting the speed we should, or there is constant packet loss."
"The security offered by the solution is pretty good."
"Prisma supports all of the applications we're currently using."
"Prisma SD-WAN is intuitive. We have a better idea of the different tools we can use and jump between the menus quickly."

Cons

"The initial setup could be a bit easier."
"The price is the only thing that could be improved. Citrix is not a cheap solution."
"Given that Citrix SD-WAN solved all our problems by providing us with everything we needed to unify communications with our branches and data centers, I cannot suggest anything further in terms of improvements."
"I am happy with this product. If anything, its price can be reduced. It is a bit expensive."
"I would like to see more customization to adjust for the WAN lock-out due to our unexpected power outages."
"The price could be improved, it's an expensive solution."
"The only improvement for Citrix SD-WAN would be to lower its cost."
"I would like to either see the price reduced or have it packaged with other products to give better value for the money."
"Prisma SD-WAN's technical support should be improved."
"We are incorporating their zone-based firewalls. Prisma SD-WAN has limited documentation on how it manipulates traffic, e.g., how it is interacting with TCP and UDP. We recently had some traffic that was black holing. We literally had to do packet captures to see that the new zone-based firewall, which runs on top of Prisma SD-WAN, was causing issues."
"I would also like to see improvement in the product training for customers. Palo Alto has not initiated very much training but they have to do so because this is a new product. If you have experience in a legacy environment, and you are moving to Prisma SD-WAN, you don't have a training framework. That is one of the disadvantages."
"Prisma could be a little cheaper."
"There are two parallel things that we want Palo Alto to work on. First, customers want a unified appliance that does the work of all firewalls in addition to SD-WAN. Second, the cloud presence should be completely automated. If I purchase the SASE architecture, I shouldn't worry about deployments in Prisma Access or on Prisma SD-WAN. It should be deployed in one go."
"I'd like to see them move more towards CASB."
"Customer support is our biggest pain point. The quality of support has gone down a little since we initially deployed this product. I don't know if this is due to turnover at Palo Alto or a lack of training. It is now taking one or two days to get an initial response that says, "Hey, we've looked into this, can you pull this data for us?" In the past, we'd immediately get a response."
"Event correlation and analysis capabilities do not help minimize the number of alarms from a single event. That is the problem. We are getting a lot of incidents, and there is some issue with the correlation. That is still a drawback."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"I believe that Citrix SD-WAN is a good investment, but I do not have the information to be more specific."
"The price is relatively expensive."
"I'm not quite sure of the price ranges. Roughly, the hidden devices can scale up to $20K for one appliance. However, the branch CPs are USD $1,000 to $2,500."
"The license was a one-time purchase. It's expensive."
"It would be helpful to have a demo license available for customers who want to prove the concept and conduct a proof of concept (POC) before committing to the solution. This is particularly important for customers in Egypt who often require a demonstration of the solution's features and compatibility with their needs before making any investment or incurring costs. Providing a demo license would allow customers to assess whether the solution would meet their needs or not."
"It's a little bit on the high side compared to the other products."
"Citrix SD-WAN is quite an affordable product."
"The price of the subscription should be cheaper."
"If you're already invested in a Palo Alto product, it would be logical to use this solution. If not, there might be some other solutions that are more viable in terms of pricing."
"This solution stood out because it cost considerably less than the other SD-WAN solutions out there from Cisco."
"On a scale from one to ten, where one is cheap and ten is expensive, I rate the solution's pricing an eight out of ten."
