We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"We could literally swap out a piece of hardware, slide one back into the chassis, and immediately - about three reboots later - it was identical. We didn't have to worry about configuring it, we didn't have to spend any time getting anything into place. It came back and it healed the environment almost immediately.""It monitors all our servers, and if there is any problem it straight away sends us an alert. If It's a faulty component, we can see it from there. It sends an alert.""The hypervisor and cluster profiles make it easy to integrate with VMware.""Deploys faster new virtual services.""Firmware compliance is one of the most valuable features.""Just the ability to provision the servers with storage and network everything within one interface, not having to go into multiple interfaces to provision those pieces.""The most valuable features of HPE OneView are environment monitoring, the ease of firmware upgrade, and the ability to manage all the servers and the infrastructure from one team.""I don't have to use CD-ROMs or anything like that to provision the servers."

"The up-to-date graphs and the history are very good.""Its initial setup process is fast and easy.""PRTG is relatively intuitive and fairly straightforward. It has net flow monitoring and that works all right. I would describe it as a decent middle-of-the-road solution.""The most valuable feature of PRTG Network Monitor is real-time monitoring.""I really love the activity library. It gives the flexibility to discover data and metrics about my interface and data server.""The most valuable features of PRTG Network Monitor are bandwidth utilization, user-friendliness, all past report simple retrievals, and timeout features. Additionally, if the solution does go down it is simple to bring it back.""Good compilation of the system's information.""It has made our infrastructure more reliable."

Cons
"We have a version 3 and a version 1.2, but the upgrade process from the 1.2 to the 3 is kind of an issue.""HPE OneView should be able to cover more device models apart from ProLiant and Synergy.""Integration could be improved. Sometimes OneView doesn't identify physical hardware.""I would like to see support for things that aren't in the current generation. We have a lot of 7th and 8th generation hardware.""The tool doesn't send automated alerts via email...We should be able to receive notification emails when a server or hardware issue arises, which would be helpful if someone is unavailable in the office.""Sometimes the interface can be a little confusing, sometimes the error messages can be very cryptic, as far as what's actually going on.""The network configuration part of HPE OneView needs improvement. The solution has way too many features, and there's a need for proper configuration indicators to be put in place.""We've had a few issues. We just upgraded to the 3.9.0 version. We think that now that we are on that version, hopefully a lot of those things are going to go away for us."

More HPE OneView Cons →

"PRTG Network Monitor needs to show bandwidth utilization in proper graphs. It isn't easy to learn.""The automation should be improved.""With custom sensors, there is a lot of work which needs to be done in the background, just for it to be tailor-made for the specific thing that we are actually monitoring. We take a lot of time with the custom sensors. I would like to see the customer sensor be more robust and a bit more varied.""The dashboarding definitely needs improvement.""I would like to see them take their graphing tools and convert them into a collector so that we can point telemetry to them""PRTG Network Monitor could improve the price.""I wouldn't mind better categories for the sensors. When I go to add a new sensor for a new device, there are some categories in there already, and they can be filtered out, but there's quite a large pool of sensors... When I want to go in and find something quite specific, I have got to scroll down and scroll down to find what I'm actually looking for,""The inventory of the device should be improved."

I have researched a quite a few network monitoring tools which can be used for various monitoring purposes of not only the servers, but the intermediate routers as well. There are majorly three types of these softwares. Ones which are completely open-source, you can do almost anything you want using these, but they require quite some expertise before you can use them. Then there are the ones that are not open source, the enterprise softwares and cost you some money, but on the other hand, they are extremely easy to set-up and learn. You can have them up and running in a matter of minutes. And then there are those which are completely cloud based. They can be free of cost or charge some money depending on the software. The good thing about these is that you don’t have to install any extra software, and it can be managed completely online but then again these have limited features and you cannot exploit them to the full extent as you can do with the open-source and to some extent the enterprise software, so I won’t suggest you to use these, because these are generally not the complete solutions and require other support software to achieve the same. Below I have listed the outstanding pros and cons of the various Network analyzers that you can look into Nagios Pros: Nagios offers an extensive set of collector plug-ins that allows users to gather performance and availability data from a broad range of operating systems, including  Windows and Netware Nagios… Read more →
