Unified security and sd-wan have improved uptime and cut wan costs for multi-site branches
Users report stability issues in certain versions, which requires regular updates. Real-world attacks have also highlighted the need for urgent patching of vulnerabilities.Fortinet FortiGate, while a powerful and feature-rich web firewall, could improve in areas like firmware stability, documentation, and ease of use. The learning curve can be steep for some users. For beginners, support quality can vary, and frequent updates with occasional vulnerabilities call for careful patch management. However, once Fortinet FortiGate is configured, it remains highly reliable and efficient. Customer support needs improvement, as I find it very slow, with reports from other users reflecting that customer support is inadequate.

Enhanced threat detection with integrated security features and good support
We are using application firewalling, WAF, and SD-WAN. The capabilities are mostly within the box. For example, you will get web application firewall WAF as part and parcel of this. SD-WAN is also bundled. It integrates with their SIEM and SOAR solutions very nicely. Lastly, the pricing point is very cost-efficient as well.

Has provided built-in VPN tools and reporting features that streamline remote access and monitoring tasks
We do an outside-sourced threat prevention regarding the Threat Prevention features. I haven't run into areas that could be improved or cons versus pros for Untangle NG Firewall. I haven't done anything too advanced when it comes to the filtering, so I'm not sure what can be improved or added. I haven't dug into the advanced features, but I think some of the advanced capabilities are probably where it lacks a little bit, with the filtering and firewall rules. These areas could be improved to make it a nine out of 10 or a 10 out of 10 for overall rating.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"We have used multiple WAN ASPs and set up SD-WAN; it's quite interesting and user-friendly; essentially, anyone can configure it—just go through the documentation and you'll be able to set it up directly."
"Fortigate represents a really scalable way of delivering perimeter network security, some level of layer 7 security, WAF, and also a way to create a meshed ADVPN solution."
"FortiGate is flexible and easy to use."
"This solution has a very friendly GUI and CLI as compared to other vendors."
"The best features of Fortinet FortiGate include the simple user interface."
"It's very good and very stable for businesses. It works very well."
"The signature database and zero-day detection are Fortinet FortiGate's most valuable features."
"The security for endpoints is the most valuable; it is very secure for our workers and allows us to secure a transaction and enable security for a specific segment in the workflow."
"Sangfor serves most of the basic purposes of a firewall, is particularly good in the DPI where we can inspect the inbound and outbound traffic on a very granular level, gives a very good predictive measure as well as the current measure of things going on in our network, and gives us value for money overall."
"When it comes to the price of firewall solutions, Sangfor NGAF takes the cake, as it is cheaper than Fortinet, Sophos, Check Point and Palo Alto."
"Sangfor NGAF works accordingly with our customers. The solution has good performance, easy to use, and integrates well with the endpoints."
"Sangfor's tech features and technologies are more powerful than those of the other solution providers in terms of security. They also have big solutions in terms of cybersecurity."
"The capabilities are mostly within the box."
"So far, the performance and reliability of the product have supported our company's critical network traffic."
"The built-in features function as intended, providing exceptional value."
"In four steps one can configure the entire firewall."
"The solution's most valuable feature is the content filtering."
"The all-in-one gateway security functions and the ability to install it on generic equipment stand out."
"NG Firewalls allow us to permit or deny applications we don't want to run. We also use content filtering, SSL inspection, and all the other things we run on the firewall to keep our clients protected and ensure they're not going where they shouldn't. It's a great firewall that works as intended."
"The threat prevention features of Untangle NG Firewall have helped my network security management, and I find them very good."
"It has improved and secured multiple clients."
"Web Filter is effective, Web Cache offers bandwidth savings, and the VPN setup is easy."
"They have a command center that makes it easy to log into and see all of your appliances nationwide."
"The product’s most valuable features are endpoint protection management, load balancing, and connectivity with Active Directory."

Cons

"I think some improvements could be made in vulnerability scanning."
"As far as wanting more scalability or things in the network diagram, it's going to cost you."
"In the balance between links feature normally you can just choose one option to balance. It would be better for the solution to have more than one option, preferably three."
"Scalability is one of the disadvantages. When it comes to scalability, you have to actually change the box."
"I would like to see more advanced developments of a wireless controller in the future."
"They need to improve their technical support."
"We have never encountered any issues with it. The price and deployment part of Fortinet FortiGate is good, but it can always be better."
"I think the only issue that needs improvement is the interface."
"We have deployed many firewalls and have faced two or three faulty devices that we have to replace over a year because their power supply was faulty."
"I think the GUI needs to be improved, there are a lot of areas where the panes do not make sense."
"An area of improvement for Sangfor NGAF could be in the field of reporting and logging."
"Sangfor could improve by providing better real-time reporting, as the current reports don't offer the level of detail we need, especially for runtime insights."
"The setup phase is quite complex."
"The interface and user experience are horrible."
"They need to increase the number of ports in the firewall."
"Sangfor could improve their interface capacity on the 5100 series model and upgrade their hardware from one gig to 10 gig. This would improve the overall throughput."
"The product must improve its reporting features."
"The product needs to have a better support group for its online support, specifically for its help desk."
"The ability to setup a DDNS for each WAN independently would be a very handy feature."
"Web-filtering policies could be improved."
"The product needs to improve its mobile application."
"At this stage, I think the SSL decryption option can be streamlined."
"The common center facility that Untangle provides should be available on-premises. There are great corporations here in Mexico that like the Untangle solution, but they don't like the fact that the monitoring and access to the appliance are in the cloud. They request for the common center facility to be available and installed on-premises."
"It does have multi-factor authentication in some areas, but I would love to see a more widely implemented version of that on the devices themselves."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"There is no challenge in Fortinet FortiGate pricing."
"Cost-wise, there is not much difference from Sophos, but feature-wise, we get more features."
"I had to pay for the license for the firewall, but it is guaranteed to have updates. I expect a good service for it. It was about €1000 for a year, and there was no additional cost."
"The solution requires a license annually, it is not a user license, you can have as many users as your want. I must renew the license regularly per device."
"It is expensive. You need to pay for the subscription every year, which is very expensive. The subscription includes technical support and hardware exchange in case of failure."
"It is too expensive for us. My organization is very small, and we have a total of ten users. We have three internal users and seven external users. The FortiGate 100D series is too expensive for renewing the licenses."
"I would rate the pricing a five out of ten"
"We saved a bundle by not needing all the past appliances from an NGFW."
"If you know you have around 200+ computer users on your network, then the Sangfor NGAF 5200-F-I model would be the minimum recommended model for that amount of users. This model includes modules for packet filtering, deep packet inspection, malware scanning, DSCP filtration, and many other features."
"The price is unmatcheable."
"For four to five physical appliances for a licensed firewall, it costs approximately $4,000."
"The product is very cost-effective compared to other brands or vendors."
"The pricing is reasonable."
"If one is very cheap and ten is very expensive, I rate the tool's price as three out of ten."
"Sangfor NGAF price is reasonable and there is an annual license. However, the maintenance cost can be a bit high."
"Price-wise, I would not consider Sangfor NGAF to be a cheap product. It is an expensive firewall solution, though not as expensive as something like Palo Alto, which is costly. However, the higher price point is justifiable given the feature set the tool provides that other firewalls may not offer in a single dedicated appliance."
"It is not expensive. It is cheaper than Fortinet."
"On a scale from one to ten, where one is cheap and ten is expensive, I rate the solution's pricing an eight out of ten."
"This is not an expensive product. It is affordable and there are different packages available depending on the features that you need, or the sector that you are in."
"The solution is fairly priced."
"The setup cost is about $2000 to $3000 per year."
"We pay $350 USD per year for the solution. There are no additional costs. As long as you're not using a physical appliance, that's all you need."
"Usually, it's about $350 a year for 12 users, and it's about $600 for 50 users. It's very reasonable as compared to the others. One of the reasons is that they're all open-source. You just buy their appliance and put it in until it dies. Because it's run under open platforms, mine seems to always work on older equipment. I've taken old equipment and put a new hard disk in it. I have taken about nine-year-old computers and put their operating system on them, and ran them like a champ. The only thing that changed was the hard drive because I don't trust a hard drive that's more than three to four years old."
"The pricing model is better than with SonicWall."
