Selenium without the fuss

What is most valuable?

Turn-key access to any browser/OS combination I need

Video recording with permalink to the test job

How has it helped my organization?

I've been able to help numerous companies get up and running with Selenium quickly thanks to Sauce Labs.

For how long have I used the solution?

4 years

How are customer service and technical support?

Customer Service:

Support is friendly and responsive.

Technical Support:

Solid.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Local execution and a small number of virtual images. Switched because it became too onerous to support.

How was the initial setup?

For a technical person, it's pretty straightforward.

It can be complex given the nature of Selenium and integrating with a third-party platform. But once you understand the fundamentals of Selenium and Sauce, it's simple enough to connect your tests to their infrastructure and capture the results for your own reporting needs.

What about the implementation team?

I help companies implement Selenium. When implementing Sauce (which is a given unless there are constraints that prohibit it) I either update their existing test code to work with it, or implement my open source Selenium framework for their testing needs (http://github.com/chemistrykit/chemistrykit) which comes with Sauce support built-in.

Our feature design to the delivery timeline is not tied down by our ability to test anymore
Pros and Cons
  • "Testing my app on cloud has really helped us with save time and resources to procure various hardware and software, and set those up."
  • "Better and programmatic controls on request/response recordings and sharing with developers."

What is most valuable?

Testing my app on cloud has really helped us with save time and resources to procure various hardware and software, and set those up. The convenience of getting the test done with one click on several browsers/platforms is the key feature we use all the time.

How has it helped my organization?

We are saving a ton of the required lead time before starting any tests. Before, we would plan months ahead on browsers/platforms to determine the needed support, and keep them ready as development happened. Now, we can be much more efficient. Our feature design to the delivery timeline is not tied down by our ability to test anymore.

What needs improvement?

Better and programmatic controls on request/response recordings and sharing with developers.

For how long have I used the solution?

Slightly over a year.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

No, it was smooth.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We very rarely have had any crashes, but otherwise it is stable as a rock.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

No.

How are customer service and technical support?

Customer Service:

I have not personally needed it yet, but their documentation and examples are solid.

Technical Support:

Not applicable.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Everything else was homegrown; nothing like this.

How was the initial setup?

Not at all.

What about the implementation team?

Ourselves.

What was our ROI?

Yet to be measured, but if i were to take a wild swing at it, it's more than 1000%.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Go ahead please. Try it at a smaller scale.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

None that I am aware of.

Quickly run multiple OS and browser combinations.

Valuable Features:

Sauce Labs is great in that you can spin up a virtual machine of one of many different configurations and quickly get your test up and running.  After, you have a great report of the test status along with screenshots, video and other meta data about your test.  To do this in house would be way too time consuming and costly.

Improvements to My Organization:

Quickly running multiple OS and browser combinations with ease.  What more needs to be said?

Room for Improvement:

Not really sure.  Maybe a .NET test runner option?  This may or may not already be in place, but I know it wasn't the last time I checked on it.

Sauce Labs has a test runner available for Ruby or some other language other than .NET which allows users to execute their tests directly from it.  This would be nice to have for .NET, as well.  Currently, tests are started locally and then they are run on Sauce Labs.  It would be a nice option to have it all started and executed on Sauce Labs.
