Has good snapshotting and cloning features
Pros and Cons
  • "Veeam Backup Replication's snapshotting and cloning are the most valuable features."
  • "The cost needs to be considered."

What is our primary use case?

We have scheduled the backup to be done on our side. At certain intervals, depending on the capability of Veeam, we are doing the replication at a remote site on the same cluster that we use Nutanix as a backup. Basically, we have a Nutanix cluster taking backup of another Nutanix cluster. Outside of this, we are also using Veeam, which is on another machine, or basically another storage.

We have 19 Veeam running on a four-node cluster. Currently, we are using 80% of our RAM capacity and have more CPU and storage available, we still have capacity.

How has it helped my organization?

Before using Veeam and HCI, we were performing the functions physically. We used physical machines to run our services. Hardware failure leads to the pillar of our services. Now we have high organization and we can sustain any failure.

We have found the Veeam function very useful because it saves us a lot of storage.

What is most valuable?

Veeam Backup Replication's snapshotting and cloning are the most valuable features.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Veeam Backup for a year and a half.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Veeam is a stable solution.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Veeam is scalable. We can add nodes to scale up, it's a scale of architecture.

How are customer service and support?

We receive very good support from Nutanix.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Prior to Veeam we had physical machines that required manual backup.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup of Veeam is very straightforward. It took one month to get the production. After the initial deployment, we had to migrate our Veeam from physical to virtual so that took another two months.

What about the implementation team?

We received help from the OEM. After set up it is easy to manage ourselves without help from OEM or any system user.

What was our ROI?

We have seen a return on our investment within two years. Prior to Veeam, we were doing the work physically, which is costly. We had to buy hardware every time we needed a new service to go to production. Now we have the cluster and can immediately deploy a new Veeam and be up and running immediately.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Veeam Backup Replication is a one time subscription for five years.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We evaluated other options from VMware, Cisco Hyper-V and Nutanix.

What other advice do I have?

The cost needs to be considered.

I would rate Veeam Backup Replication an 8 out of 10.

Easy to set up, easy to use, and reliable
Pros and Cons
  • "The product is very straightforward and very easy to use from the client-side."
  • "It's not that easy to use from the management side."

What is our primary use case?

The clients are using the solution for backup and restore and also for replication. The new model also has the management of virtual servers.

What is most valuable?

It's one of the most stable offerings.

The product is very straightforward and very easy to use from the client-side.

The solution is scalable.

The initial setup is very straightforward.

What needs improvement?

It's not that easy to use from the management side.

The solution needs to improve its traditional backups. They back up data as others do at the moment - however, it's not as good. Also, restoring is very fast, however, they need some improvement in deduplication.

It's more the management in the level of replication. There needs to be a much higher level of replication. Right now, it's a basic replication in the secondary site. The recovery needs to be much faster as recovery is very important. The fastest recovery is from Rubrik.

Rubrik is the fastest recovery backup solution, and Cohesity is the same as it depends on the hardware which they have.

Veeam should come with the hardware as others, like Cohesity, come with the hardware.

For how long have I used the solution?

We've been using the solution for five years. It's been a while.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The product is very stable. There are no bugs or glitches. It doesn't crash or freeze. It's reliable and the performance is good.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

You can scale it easily. Every time you need to buy a new license, you just add more licenses, and that's it.

At the moment, all of our customers are using Veeam. We have more than 20 customers.

How are customer service and support?

We don't use technical support very much, however, my sense is they're okay. I cannot say something more precise, as we didn't really use it.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is pretty straightforward. It's not complex or difficult. The deployment process takes about an hour or so.

To set up and deploy the solution, you only need a maximum of two people - one consultant and one assistant.

What was our ROI?

I didn't study ROI. Return of investment has to do with disaster recovery. This is one of the best solutions, Veeam, to retrieve machines if a disaster happens. If one site goes, and you have replication with Veeam, your company can continue on without loss.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The customer needs to pay for Veeam. They need to pay a license per virtual machine, and the cost depends on how many virtual machines they want to back up.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We also are a partner of Cohesity, and we've evaluated the two. The main difference is Cohesity comes with hardware.

The license is based on the capacity of the space where the backup stays, and also is very straightforward, much like Veeam. They are straightforward, and it's very, very, very powerful, however, you really depend on the hardware. This is a different way of licensing.

Veeam is very straightforward, however, licensing is for virtual machines, how many you have. That means sometimes in the environment if you have lots of machines, virtual machines, it is better to use Cohesity as you can add as many virtual machines as you want and the license is always based on the capacity of the hardware where it stays.

What other advice do I have?

We are resellers. We are gold partners with Veeam.

We sell only the latest version of the solution.

I recommend both Veeam and Cohesity, however, depends on how your environment is.

I'd rate the product at a ten out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Affordable, easy to set up and has a simple UI
Pros and Cons
  • "It's scalable."
  • "They need to improve their technical side."

What is our primary use case?

We primarily use the solution for backups in the virtualization area. They are experts in virtualization. For a lot of use cases, the customer doesn't have a backup in their virtualization for VMware HyperV or Nutanix. We are using Veeam to back up their virtualization.

What is most valuable?

They are the second-best backup after Veritas.

Veeam is easy to set up and they have a simple UI for users to set up and administer the Veeam console.

Veeam has low pricing. They are great for a smaller market or smaller business all the way through to enterprise-sized companies. It's scalable. In Indonesia, maybe two of our telco companies use Veeam and they have a lot of the market in Indonesia.

The solution's initial setup is easy.

It's a stable solution.

What needs improvement?

They need to improve their technical side. They don't have a lot of compatibility with Solar HP-UX, IX, or SAP. They still need to have a lot of improvement in that area.

They need to make their Office 365 backup is included in one console with the backup replication. It will be easier that way and place it in line with the Veritas NetBackup offering.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We have found the product to be quite stable. It's not buggy. There aren't glitches. It's reliable. It doesn't crash or freeze.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The product can scale well. It's great for small businesses to larger enterprises.

How are customer service and support?

Since Veeam is easy to use and easy to set up, we don't have a lot of problems. Therefore, we don't have a lot of experience with their support. We've never had a reason to contact them. Due to this, I can's speak to how helpful or responsive they are.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I am familiar with Veritas as well.

How was the initial setup?

The solution is straightforward and simple to set up. It's not a complex or difficult process. A company shouldn't have any issues implementing it.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing is very good. They are very affordable, even for smaller businesses.

What other advice do I have?

We are a Veeam partner. We're partners with a variety of organizations.

We use various deployment models, including public and private cloud, on-premises, and hybrid setups.

I would rate the solution at an eight out of ten. We are quite pleased with its capabilities.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Public Cloud

If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?

Efficient backup, supports all vendors, and helpful documentation
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable features of Veeam Backup Replication are efficient backup and replication. Additionally, Veeam Backup Replication supports all products and vendors."
  • "The solution could improve by having more user-friendly dashboards."

What is our primary use case?

We use Veeam Backup Replication for data backup and replication.

We will upgrade to version 11 soon.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable features of Veeam Backup Replication are efficient backup and replication. Additionally, Veeam Backup Replication supports all products and vendors.

What needs improvement?

The solution could improve by having more user-friendly dashboards.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Veeam Backup Replication for approximately six years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Veeam Backup Replication is highly stable.

I had a customer that has been in operation for two years without any critical issues.

We do not have plans to increase usage at this time. We use the basic version at this time.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability of the solution is good.

We have five people in my organization that use this solution and support 10 customers.

How are customer service and support?

I am in Turkey and the support is very important for the customer but it should be improved.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We have used Commvault previously but the customers cannot use Commvault for backups and replication, it is not included on the Commvault backup software.

Veeam Backup Replication allows both features.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup of Veeam Backup Replication was straightforward. Step by step, we did not have any problems.

What about the implementation team?

We have five people for maintenance of Veeam Backup Replication.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The price of Veeam Backup Replication has been increasing their price and my customers are asking why. They have CPU-based licenses and a Universal License, the prices should be reduced.

What other advice do I have?

I would advise others that want to implement this solution to check the Veeam website for documentation and follow the information all step by step on how to install it. Everything is available in the documentation about implementation. If someone follows the documentation they will not have a problem with the implementation.

I rate Veeam Backup & Replication a nine out of ten.

Agent-less, easy to set up, and hardware-agnostic
Pros and Cons
  • "It's streamlined the backup and recovery for my customers in the sense that it has an easy management console that's easy to set up any type of instant recovery."
  • "The licensing models, from a reseller's perspective, could be better."

What is our primary use case?

It's generally used by colleges, universities, and healthcare. I support a very, very small amount of healthcare. I support state and local government - such as towns, counties, and police departments. It's used in the public sector.

How has it helped my organization?

It's streamlined the backup and recovery for my customers in the sense that it has an easy management console that's easy to set up any type of instant recovery.

It also has helped them as it plugs into just about any cloud. They can not only have backup and recovery but have a disaster recovery plan as well. It really just takes the heavy burden of backup and recovery disaster recovery off of customers and streamlines it.

What is most valuable?

I like that it's agent-less. That's very important to customers.

The biggest positive aspect is the fact that Veeam is relatively hardware-agnostic in regards to what you target Veeam on. This makes it, in the public sector space, very affordable for customers to get into and to have a really good backup and recovery solution. They can choose what type of target they're going to couple the Veeam software with and they can ensure it will be within their budget.

The initial setup is simple.

I find the product very scalable.

The stability is good.

Technical support is great.

What needs improvement?

The licensing models, from a reseller's perspective, could be better. Veeam has changed its licensing models. It'd be nice to have some sort of cheat sheet as we are getting tripped up on the new licensing models.

Although to Veeam, it probably seems easy for them to understand the licensing models, as a reseller of many different products, we're finding ourselves getting tripped up on just the licensing models.

Any type of cheat sheet to help partners understand the licensing a little bit better, so we can have a quick reference guide when we're on the phone talking to customers would help us a lot.

To someone like myself who covers VMware, Veeam, Dell, HP, and a wide set of products, anything to make my life easier to kind of solve the problem for the customer and close the deal and not have any unanswered questions, which are usually around how it's licensed and how it's priced, would help us sell more of their product.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been dealing with the solution for at least five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It's very stable. From a post-sales perspective, I have not had any customers complain about Veeam or anything being unstable about it. I do come across customers every once in a while that just don't like Veeam. I do not know why. It's usually someone within the organization that's not on the call. I just had a school district in Colorado. They said his director does not like Veeam. I couldn't get any real answers as to why, however, everyone has opinions, and it's not related to stability. I'm very confident in selling Veeam.

That said, I do come across customers that have had bad experiences. However, I can't elaborate on that, unfortunately.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It's extremely scalable. It's very flexible. I feel very confident about the scalability. There are no questions about that. You add more licensing, you can add more drives to whatever appliance that you have on-site. It's very, very scalable.

A lot of my customers, more and more customers, have Veeam. What I anticipate seeing is that a lot of people are going to need to expand their Veeam licensing and renew their support on the Veeam licensing. That's where I see growth. Almost definitely, every account that I come across has some level of backup and recovery in place.

How are customer service and support?

I've found the technical support to be excellent. The folks that I work with that support our partners are great.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I would say the majority of the customers are using Veeam or Barracuda. In some cases, customers use Unitrends. However, a lot of them, my customers, are using Veeam.

Barracuda's pricing is through the roof. They have not stayed competitive. Customers really frown upon their pricing immediately.

Unitrends does not have the mind share of many customers. Many have not heard of Unitrends. In the public sector, traditionally school systems and so forth, use the Barracuda. A lot of that is in the public sector. Unitrends is a little bit harder to sell as it's a new product. Also, from a partner perspective, they are much harder to navigate as far as getting pricing and the account manager wants to talk to you. It seems like they get caught up in the procedures of selling it. Whereas, Veeam streamlines that whole process for us and really makes it easy to sell.

How was the initial setup?

The implementation is very straightforward.

Deployment is circumstantial depending upon how large the customer's environment is. My company has a services team that can put together a statement of work to help with any type of setup, installation, or migration to services. In some cases in larger accounts, we'll bring in our services person to go on-site and help them install, implement, and set up Veeam. That's all part of the solution portfolio that we support.

You only need one person for deployment and maintenance, even in the larger accounts. Based on everything that I support, installing Veeam is probably one of the easiest deployments that are out there. We only deal with under 1,000 users. Some of the colleges get a little bit big. However, I'm not in the enterprise space. I'm in the public sector. We do have some large cities from time to time. Most of the deployments that I do are usually under 1,000 and are very small counties and so forth.

What about the implementation team?

We can help our clients set up the solution.

The Veeam engineers have actually helped a customer install it on-site as well. There was a gentleman from the Veeam engineering team that called him on his cell phone and they had it installed within five minutes. It was phenomenal support.

What was our ROI?

The return on investment is the protection of the client's data center. It's hard to tie a dollar amount to that.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Veeam's pricing typically is extremely competitive. Rarely do we see it higher than the competitors'. With their new licensing model that they have put into place, they have really made it extremely affordable for a lot of my small towns who have to go to the town hall or police departments and request money. You've got the chief basically running the IT and running the police department. They look at things differently as they're not IT people necessarily that we're working with. Therefore, when they see pricing on technologies, it's even harder for them to justify the spend. However, Veeam has done a really good job at really staying competitive. I would say that they're definitely the strongest from a pricing perspective.

In terms of extra costs above licensing, if someone decides to use the cloud, that would be considered an operational cost. Then, of course, whoever the IT staff is, there's got to be some level of maintenance and provisioning and configuring and so forth of users. There's the head count too that goes with supporting Veeam.

What other advice do I have?

I'm a reseller.

We tend to deal with the most recent version of the product.

Clients should understand how to configure it and how to set it up. That's kind of where my expertise would come in is configuring the hardware that the Veeam is going to reside on.

I'd rate the solution at a ten out of ten based on the overall support, the professionalism. From my perspective, Veeam does everything. They're my number one product. I tell my guys over at Veeam that support me, they are the best. They're always there to support me and get back to me. It's a great company.

Easy to set up with good scalability and helpful technical support
Pros and Cons
  • "The solution is stable."
  • "When you have to renew the licenses you sometimes have some trouble getting rid of the old one and reassigning it to the new one. That's an aspect that could run smoother and could be better."

What is most valuable?

We like it due to the fact that we can get error messages to alert us to issues. We can get a forecast for our storage and so on. It's really good.

The initial setup is easy.

The solution is stable.

The product is very scalable.

Technical support is helpful and knowledgeable. They respond very fast.

What needs improvement?

You have several monitors you have to tune. You have several snapshots on the volume and so on, and this is the standard. However, for example, if you have Rezon from VMware, you have much more snapshots on the volume, and yet it's not a problem as Rezon doesn't have these issues with the huge number of snapshots. They should offer more snapshots on Veeam.

The pricing could be reduced.

When you have to renew the licenses you sometimes have some trouble getting rid of the old one and reassigning it to the new one. That's an aspect that could run smoother and could be better.

For how long have I used the solution?

We've used the solution for the last eight years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is very stable. There are no bugs or glitches. It doesn't crash or freeze. It's reliable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution scales very well.

You just put in another license key and you can add some hosts. It's that easy.

We have five people that directly use the solution within our company.

How are customer service and technical support?

Technical support from Veeam is great. You don't want to have an issue, however, if you do, they can help you really fast, and they know what to do and they ask the right questions to get deep into the problem if you have something complex or difficult. They'll help you install a patch so that everything is fine. It's great.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The price always could be lower, however, compared to others, it's pretty much in line with other options on the market.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I haven't really looked into other solutions. I've compared the open-managed integration for vCenter, and that's a really cheap one - however, it's hard to install and you often have issues. I would say it's a small giveaway from Dell as an add-on to the hardware.

What other advice do I have?

We're a customer and an end-user of the solution.

We have the Veeam plugin from Dell and Veeam ONE. Veeam ONE is in the availability suite we have ordered and we changed our hardware from Dell and for the last five years, we have the open-managed integration.

We're currently on version 11 and we updated the solution in February.

For those considering the solution, I would advise that they deactivate the alarm at first and then run it in a warning mode so that you can learn within the environment. Veeam has some limits, and these limits are often only baselines. You may have other limits as you have faster hosts or you have other storage, et cetera. If you run in warning mode, you can learn and put in the correct baselines. You can tune it and then you won't get so many alerts. Once you have tuned your environment against the Veeam baseline it's really comfortable to work with.

I'd rate the solution at an eight out of ten.

Good support, stable, and easy to set up
Pros and Cons
  • "The backup and replication capabilities are quite good."
  • "The integration with other solutions should be improved."

What is our primary use case?

In my previous company, this was being used as the backup and replication solution.

What is most valuable?

The backup and replication capabilities are quite good.

What needs improvement?

The integration with other solutions should be improved.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have worked with Veeam Backup & Replication for two years. I stopped using it a few months ago when I changed companies.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

For the entire time that I used it, this product was stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

This a scalable solution.

How are customer service and technical support?

The technical support for Veeam is good.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We currently use Dell EMC Avamar and we also have experience with IBM Spectrum Protect.

These are all specialty tools and are good, although, for the needs of our organization, we prefer Avamar.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is easy.

What other advice do I have?

Overall, this is quite a good product and I recommend it.

I would rate this solution a nine out of ten.

The biggest advantage has become the functionality of instant recovery and a synthetic full backup.

What is most valuable?

In the past, it was an agentless backup for virtual machines run on the VMware ESX and ESXi (free ESXi without vCenter) servers. As the competitive products also began to use CBT and began to dismantle agentless backup, the biggest advantage for me was the functionality of instant recovery and a synthetic full backup. The SureBackup task and the ability to quickly create a clone of the production environment for testing are also great.

How has it helped my organization?

It ensures the security of the stored data. It saves time for recovery and disk space.

What needs improvement?

Improve compatibility with the database systems such as Oracle, PostgreSQL, and MySQL, and increase the number of compatible disk systems for the snapshot functionality.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have used this solution for about 6-7 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

There were standard problems with the snapshot consolidation for big virtual disks.

How are customer service and technical support?

The technical support is great.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We have used almost all of biggest players for a backup solution. Veeam won because it is simple to use and great to integrate with virtualization solutions.

How was the initial setup?

The setup was easy and quick.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It would be useful to use the capacity licensing option.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We looked at other solutions, namely Dell EMC Data Protection Suite (DPS), Veritas Backup Exec and IBM Spectrum Protect.

What other advice do I have?

It always depends on your needs and the client's environment. If the client has virtualization for almost all systems, then Veeam is the best way to protect them.
