Supports multiple environments, easy to use, and stable
Pros and Cons
  • "It is easy to use, and you can run it with all kinds of client software environments. It works well with the most popular software, file systems, and operating systems. It is very useful to us."
  • "We want a solution that can be scaled-out because our data is growing very quickly, and we aren't able to back it up quickly. It takes one or two days, which is a problem. It is very slow. We just use one backup server. We want another solution with maybe a backup server cluster to back up more data in one day. We want a solution that can be scaled-out to back up our data quickly and efficiently."

What is our primary use case?

We use Veritas to back up our database and our project's data, such as chart layouts, research and data files, to tape library or network-attached storage (NAS).

What is most valuable?

It is easy to use, and you can run it with all kinds of client software environments. It works well with the most popular software, file systems, and operating systems. It is very useful to us.

What needs improvement?

We want a solution that can be scaled-out because our data is growing very quickly, and we aren't able to back it up quickly. It takes one or two days, which is a problem. It is very slow. For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for more than eight years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is very stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We just use it on one backup server. Our data is growing, and it is taking more time to back up our complete data. It is very slow. We want a solution that can be scaled-out to back up our data quickly and efficiently.

In terms of the number of users, we have 20 to 30 users of this solution.

How are customer service and support?

Technical support is not convenient in China these days because of the virus. It may be because the engineers from the vendor are working from home, so we cannot get telephone support. We can only use email support, which is not efficient.

How was the initial setup?

Its initial setup is not very complex. It took us one or two months to deploy it. We have a team of five IT people for deployment.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend this solution. We are a system integrator, and we have a lot of users who have been using this solution for ten years. The only problem that we are facing now is of speed. We will continue to use it, but we are also looking for a better solution to back up more quickly. Speed is our main requirement. We might continue to use Veritas if they can provide a parallel solution, a cluster solution, or a cloud solution to back up our data more quickly. Otherwise, we will switch to another vendor.

I would rate Veritas NetBackup a nine out of ten.

Simplest on the market, scalable and stable
Pros and Cons
  • "I have found it to be the simplest solution to the market. It gives us a complete end to end solution. We are using this solution, Veritas Appliance and another one for access archiving. It is convenient to have all the support from one vendor."
  • "Support for the solution needs improvement."

What is our primary use case?

We are using the solution as a storage unit.

What is most valuable?

I have found it to be the simplest solution on the market. It gives us a complete end to end solution. We are using this solution, Veritas Appliance and another one for access archiving. It is convenient to have all the support from one vendor.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the solution for more than ten years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

In my experience it is scalable. We have five administrators involved in using the solution.

How are customer service and technical support?

Support for the solution needs improvement. When we contacted support with issues, we had to be passed on to the higher level of the support team, going from level one through to three. We only managed to get a solution for our issues once we spoke to the level three support team. The lower level support is not familiar with the complexity and did not have any answers. When we frequently dealt with the support they were not able to pass us on directly to level three. This was tiresome having to deal with the lower levels not being qualified for a solution until we managed to get to level three.

What other advice do I have?

I rate Veritas NetBackup an eight out of ten.

Gives us confidence in the recoverability of our data in the event of disaster
Pros and Cons
  • "Veritas NetBackup Automatic Image Replication and CloudCatalyst features allow me to replicate deduped backup images from one site to a remote site, as well as duplicating deduped images to the Cloud (i.e. AWS S3, etc.)"
  • "This product would be improved with the inclusion of a Sandbox feature like Veeam Sandbox."

What is our primary use case?

We are protecting our company's critical data using NetBackup Virtual Appliance at multiple sites. For DR purposes, we use the NetBackup AIR feature to replicate deduped images between sites.

How has it helped my organization?

With our critical data protected by Veritas NetBackup, we feel confident knowing that we can reliably recover the data in case of incidental data loss or disaster.

What is most valuable?

Veritas NetBackup Automatic Image Replication and CloudCatalyst features allow me to replicate deduped backup images from one site to a remote site, as well as duplicating deduped images to the Cloud (i.e. AWS S3, etc.)

What needs improvement?

This product would be improved with the inclusion of a Sandbox feature like Veeam Sandbox.

For how long have I used the solution?

More than fifteen years.

Stable on-premises solution but worth checking alternative cloud options.
Pros and Cons
  • "It is pretty stable. We have one dedicated technician that is taking care of all the data protect. Typically, we have an issue once a month, if that. Or once every two months."
  • "The most common problem is the backup failures over the weekend. We have to troubleshoot and sometimes do restores and then we have trouble doing some of the restores."

What is our primary use case?

We use it for all of our data protect needs at the moment. That's why we're exploring new options, as well as going into the cloud.

What needs improvement?

The most common problem is the backup failures over the weekend.

We have to troubleshoot and sometimes do restores and then we have trouble doing some of the restores.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Veritas NetBackup since last March.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is pretty stable. We have one dedicated technician that is taking care of all the data protect. Typically, we have an issue once a month, if that. Or once every two months.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

The only comparison I can make is to Commvault, and I think Commvault is a much better product, so I probably would rate it a six or a seven.

What other advice do I have?

My advice to anyone considering this program is to take a really good look at cloud options.

On a scale of one to ten, I would give Veritas NetBackup a six.

Simple GUI but managing dependencies should be agentless
Pros and Cons
  • "The main thing I like about NetBackup is CloudPoint. You can take a snapshot of the endpoint and back it up with CloudPoint. The data backups are the most important."
  • "Veritas could simplify the firmware recovery in terms of the deployed. The process shouldn't be dependent on the agents. It should be completely agentless."

What is our primary use case?

We use NetBackup to take a snapshot of our endpoint server.

What is most valuable?

The main thing I like about NetBackup is CloudPoint. You can take a snapshot of the endpoint and back it up with CloudPoint. The data backups are the most important. I also like how Veritas has simplified the GUIs. There are a lot of security features in place already around the connection as well as many intelligent policies and a pure understanding of the cloud policies, so it's direct compared to many others.

What needs improvement?

Veritas could simplify the firmware recovery in terms of the deployed. The process shouldn't be dependent on the agents. It should be completely agentless.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using NetBackup for two years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

NetBackup is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

NetBackup is scalable.

How are customer service and support?

NetBackup support isn't great, but it's not the worst, either.

How was the initial setup?

Setting up NetBackup is easy, but the documentation is a bit complex. Veritas used to have consolidated documentation, so it was easy to navigate the documents. The implementation guidelines were contained in a single document, so you didn't need to switch between multiple documents. Configuration should be the clearest documentation.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The price of NetBackup is okay. I think it's a little bit expensive but manageable. It has a lot of features, and the backup is better than most applications, so I think the price is competitive.

What other advice do I have?

I rate NetBackup seven out of 10.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Public Cloud

If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It's easy to scale.

How are customer service and technical support?

Technical support is very good.

How was the initial setup?

It's somewhat complex. It wasn't very easy but it's fixable. It takes about one or two hours to deploy.

What other advice do I have?

I would give it a nine out of 10.

Feature-rich, dependable, and has a powerful licensing model
Pros and Cons
  • "I think this is the best backup solution that we have. It is very good for the infrastructure."
  • "We had some issues with the hardware backup appliance."

What is our primary use case?

We are integrators, and we sell this solution. I am in a sales position.

In most cases, Veritas NetBackup is for carriers or the banking sector; these are our primary customers.

What is most valuable?

It includes many features and has all of the features that other solutions have.

I think this is the best backup solution that we have. It is very good for the infrastructure.

What needs improvement?

We had some issues with the hardware backup appliance. Our main customer is the one that is experiencing these issues.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with Veritas NetBackup for five or six years.

We are working with the latest version.

Last year, we started to sell this version.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Veritas NetBackup is a stable solution.

How are customer service and support?

My colleagues in the engineering department handle this area.

How was the initial setup?

I don't have any information regarding the installation.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The licensing model for this solution is very powerful. The licenses are related to the number of years.

What other advice do I have?

A scalable solution which is affordable and easy to set up
Pros and Cons
  • "The solution is easy to scale."
  • "Technical support only gets back to us the following morning."

What is our primary use case?

I am working with the latest update.

The solution is used for user backups.

What is most valuable?

We consider the backup capabilities to be very good.

What needs improvement?

There are so many things which need improving. With web access, we can't access the dashboards. A person can only access the particular system in which he installed that application. We cannot get access through our local network or web. We can use the local user's details, for the purposes of looking or making modifications, but these things are not available on the web or through net access.

The dashboard systems need to be addressed. It would be very good if one could get access through his LAN, without the need to involve the server.

A utilizations check and the ability to utilize the number of users editing facilities would be very good.

While technical support is good, it takes them a long time, for reasons unbeknownst to me, to resolve issues and this is why we involve their partners. This happens every time they take the logs and search. Technical support only gets back to us the following morning.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Veritas NetBackup for the last two years.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is easy to scale.

How are customer service and support?

While technical support is good, it takes them a long time, for reasons unbeknownst to me, to resolve issues, which is why we involve their partners. This happens every time they take the logs and search. Technical support only gets back to us the following morning.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Before using Veritas NetBackup, we made use of Druva.

While we consider Druva to be very good, they only offer the cloud-based systems for the moment, which is why we switched to Veritas NetBackup. It offers an on-premises option.

Both products are very good, but Druva's cost is much higher than that of Veritas NetBackup. They are also both very good feature-wise, but the difference between them comes down to the web availability of dashboard systems.

Druva has certain fixed services, as well as additional costs.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is very simple.

The installation of the software for one who is familiar with the process takes around an hour. Otherwise, it can take two to three hours to complete the setup.

What about the implementation team?

We made use of a vendor. The solution does not require any maintenance. It is very useful and easy to maintain everything. If one is unfamiliar with the process, then he would be advised to make use of a vendor's assistance.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Veritas NetBackup is considerably cheaper than that of Druva, the former being quite affordable.

Veritas NetBackup does not have any additional costs, only the licensing fee.

What other advice do I have?

There are around 100 people making use of the solution in our company.

The solution is easy and very good.

I would absolutely recommend the solution to others.

I rate Veritas NetBackup as an eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
