For how long have I used the solution?

I was certified with NetBackup in 2008. There was a bit of a break in using backup solutions but I recently started using it again for our customer who is using it. I have approximately two years of experience.

Stable and scalable product with new free resiliency feature
Pros and Cons
  • "Veritas released a new feature in version 8 of NetBackup called VRP. It's kind of like replication management from VMware. The great thing about this feature is that Veritas gave it to us for free."
  • "I also think they could improve the reporting. They use a web-based software application OpsCenter for the reporting and I see that they haven't made any changes in years."

What is our primary use case?

Our primary use case for NetBackup is to protect all the servers and applications that we have in our company.

What is most valuable?

Veritas released a new feature in version 8 of NetBackup called VRP. It's kind of like replication management from VMware.

The great thing about this feature is that Veritas gave it to us for free.

What needs improvement?

Sometimes we have problems with the support team. They always end up solving and fixing everything, but sometimes they are slow to respond. Maybe they can increase the number of personnel they have for the Spanish language.

I also think they could improve the reporting. They use a web-based software application OpsCenter for the reporting and I see that they haven't made any changes in years.

For how long have I used the solution?

My company has been using this solution for eight years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

This solution is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Veritas NetBackup is very scalable.

How was the initial setup?

I personally have a lot of experience with this product, but someone without a whole lot of knowledge about it would have to partner up with a vendor. I would say overall deployment is at a medium level of difficulty.

What about the implementation team?

It takes about a week to deploy the solution. This is a backend solution, a master server. Sometimes, it can be difficult to set up the window changes, configure the Oracle database, etc.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

A complete backup solution but very expensive
Pros and Cons
  • "It has a very good user interface."
  • "It is a very expensive solution. They should have a different scheme for selling it. They should also make it easy for us to switch from Solaris to Linux. We are having some trouble in migrating our actual catalog from Solaris to Linux."

What is our primary use case?

We use it for the daily backup.

What is most valuable?

It has a very good user interface.

What needs improvement?

It is a very expensive solution. They should have a different scheme for selling it.

They should also make it easy for us to switch from Solaris to Linux. We are having some trouble in migrating our actual catalog from Solaris to Linux.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for 13 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It has very good stability.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Its scalability is very good so far.

How are customer service and technical support?

I never used their technical support. It has good documentation and information.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We switched because of the price and support.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is easy. Deployment is quick, but some systems can have issues.

What about the implementation team?

I used integrators. They were very good. I have two people for its maintenance.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It is very expensive. The licensing cost for this solution is on a yearly basis. It is approximately 50k. We will continue using it at least for the next year, but we are currently doing an analysis to switch to some other solution.

What other advice do I have?

It is a mature and complete solution for backup. I would rate Veritas NetBackup a seven out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

Some of the valuable features are TAR importing and scriptable scheduling
Pros and Cons
  • "DLO: Client for laptops."
  • "Setup implementation."

How has it helped my organization?

We are an SMB, but for our client, it is a life saver.

What is most valuable?

  • TAR importing
  • Scriptable scheduling
  • Central catalog
  • Local and remote backup
  • DLO: Client for laptops

What needs improvement?

  • Integration
  • Setup implementation

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

There were no issues with stability.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

There were no issues with scalability yet. However, our largest customer barely has 100 NBU clients.

How are customer service and technical support?

On Veritas, the response time is good.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Our customers have used a very wide variety of options. However, almost all of them switched due to better handling time, straight line backup, recover windows, integration with BD, and better archiving options.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup varies from customer to customer. Most setups are straightforward, but they tend to be complex over time, due to adding DR sites, alternative media, and tuning backup times.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Personally, I'd tell them to make an inventory of what they want to backup, how often, and the size of backup and recovery windows. After that, we talk about how their requirements weigh in on the pricing/licensing. After that, then the real thing starts.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We evaluated several solutions, including free/open source options and we ran some trials.

What other advice do I have?

Always leave room for more options.
