Provides end-to-end support for all your workload
Pros and Cons
- "The most valuable feature is that you don't need any special connectivity - you just need to give your seller name, and then it automatically discovers all your virtual machines, which is a great benefit, especially in a bigger environment."
- "The product could improve the user-friendliness and comfort of its environment, especially for those unfamiliar with it."
What is our primary use case?
What is most valuable?
The most valuable feature is that you don't need any special connectivity - you just need to give your seller name, and then it automatically discovers all your virtual machines, which is a great benefit, especially in a bigger environment.
What needs improvement?
The product could improve the user-friendliness and comfort of its environment, especially for those unfamiliar with it. There is also an issue with glitches in the network, which forces us to check the connectivity. In addition, some solutions are only available to internal Veritas users, not to customers or partners, and you have to allow Veritas to test your network before they give a report. This is a problem, and Veritas needs to add functionality for customers to test their own networks.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've been using this solution for ten years.

Great deduplication feature and the recently implemented ability to connect remotely
Pros and Cons
- "Great deduplication feature."
- "The solution is quite expensive."
What is our primary use case?
Our primary use case of this solution is to back up everything including VMs, email, our databases, Oracle, SQL. I'm a network security specialist and we are customers of Veritas.
What is most valuable?
The solution has many great features, particularly the feature they provide for deduplication. They have also recently included a new feature on the interface, where you can connect remotely and get any report, rather than having to check the solution through the server. They have different solutions for different things, so if you need to back up, for example, they have a solution for backing up on cloud or on-premise.
What needs improvement?
The cost of the license could be improved, it's quite expensive.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've been using this solution for 10 years.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The scalability of the product is very good. We have three to four admins dealing with the solution directly, but we do the backup for the whole organization.
How are customer service and technical support?
We receive very good support through our partner. We've been with them for over 10 years.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup was very straightforward and quick. We used a consultant for the initial implementation and for minor upgrades or minor changes, our internal team is responsible. If it's something major, our partner deals with it.
What other advice do I have?
The new updates in this solution have really made a difference and added to the value.
I would rate this solution an eight out of 10.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

Cost-effective and has proactive support
Pros and Cons
- "We were evaluating other products and getting confused between Commvault and Veritas NetBackup. The one reason that we started with Veritas NetBackup is the pricing of the license. There's no other reason from a technical perspective or even operation or capability of the two software. The main reason we chose Veritas NetBackup was that in our use case it is more cost-effective."
- "Improvements can be made to the service by providing better and more competitive ratios on data backups. The functionality for backups is there with Veritas, but I would like to see them optimize and enhance this feature more."
What is our primary use case?
We are a partner and a user of Veritas NetBackup. As a company, we are using Veritas for our internal data backup and recovery.
What needs improvement?
Improvements can be made to the service by providing better and more competitive ratios on data backups. The functionality for backups is there with Veritas, but I would like to see them optimize and enhance this feature more.
How are customer service and technical support?
Technical support from the vendor's perspective has been very proactive. They are very active in responding to customer support requests. Their response times have been good and the people are great to deal with when it comes to troubleshooting and solving problems. Veritas knows what they are doing and they have excellent experience in their own product line.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We were previously using Veritas.
What about the implementation team?
We implemented through a vendor. The vendor was very proactive. The response was great. They were knowledgable and experienced; the team got the job done.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Veritas Netbackup offers affordable licensing.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
We were evaluating other products and getting confused between Commvault and Veritas NetBackup. The one reason that we started with Veritas NetBackup is the pricing of the license. There's no other reason from a technical perspective or even operation or capability of the two software. The main reason we chose Veritas NetBackup was that in our use case it is more cost-effective.
What other advice do I have?
My advice is that it is a perfect product. I would rate it an 8 out of 10 overall. I wouldn't give it a ten because it doesn't have the necessary full backup capabilities and because it is missing functionalities like the archiving feature which is not there.

Improves on data protection and recovery while reducing potentially huge costs
Pros and Cons
- "Ease of installing, configuring, upgrading, and troubleshooting."
- "There have been issues with performance and some features."
How has it helped my organization?
I’ve seen organisations using NetBackup efficiently improving on data protection and recovery while reducing potentially huge costs due to the features I’ve mentioned above.
What is most valuable?
- Backup compatibility with most of the existing, legacy, and emerging softwares, filesystems, databases, and technologies.
- User-friendliness.
- Ease of installing, configuring, upgrading, and troubleshooting.
- Support services.
- Features like deduplication, FlashBackup, GRT, BMR, snapshot backups for virtual machines, cloud backup integration, duplication, and AIR (Auto Image Replication) feature.
What needs improvement?
Veritas is already consistently and proactively developing the backup software to make it more compatible and efficient with the latest and emerging technologies. I feel they should stick to this development and increase the pace of this development a bit more to cope up with the current need of data protection market.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
There have been issues with performance and some features. However, the support is proactive and they resolve them in a timely fashion to the best of our knowledge.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Nothing so far.
How are customer service and technical support?
10 out of 10.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We used TSM earlier. We switched to NetBackup primarily for its valuable features (as mentioned above).
How was the initial setup?
Easy in terms of setting up the three tier NetBackup domain. Challenges were encountered though while setting up other aspects like network, resiliency, firewalls, etc.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
I can’t comment much as there’s not much visibility on this aspect. However, I’d advise mostly to go for a capacity based license for mid to large scale organisations.
What other advice do I have?
Go for it! It’s the best available backup software in the market.

You can construct a comprehensive backup solution.
Pros and Cons
- "I can rely on this product if I need a restore."
- "Netbackup can backup MySQL via Oracle policy, to be honest, this is not completely native support and this method has a few limitations. In fact, you can buy from Veritas (or Zmanda) clients for MySQL or PostgerSQL from Zmanda to backup MySQL or PostgreSQL on Linux."
How has it helped my organization?
Six months ago, I recovered several dozen TBs of production data after our storage failed. I recovered Enterprise Vault, Exchange, Oracle, and SQL DBs and VMs. We did not lose any production data and immediately after recovery, the business ran smoothly.
What is most valuable?
You can construct a comprehensive robust backup solution based on NetBackup. Management of such a solution will not be an ultimate challenge. I can rely on this product if I need a restore.
What needs improvement?
The last releases introduced a simplified backup of MS SQL and Oracle. I'd like to have a more user-friendly interface for recovering MS SQL. It would be nice to have native support for MySQL and PostgreSQL. Veritas should increase the number of supported storage options.
To be more specific, NetBackup has the user interface and if you need to restore DB instead of failed one - it's OK. But if you need to restore DB to different location or another server you need: find required backup copy via the user interface, create *.bch file with restore parameters, edit this file to adopt it for the new DB destination, open this file in the user interface. For beginners, these steps are not something obvious.
Netbackup can backup MySQL via Oracle policy, to be honest, this is not completely native support and this method has a few limitations. In fact, you can buy from Veritas (or Zmanda) clients for MySQL or PostgerSQL from Zmanda to backup MySQL or PostgreSQL on Linux. But sometimes this is not convenient.
Currently, as far as I know, for Replication Director has support snapshots and replication only for Netapp storage (ONTAP) and support of snapshots for EMC VNX and EMC Celerra. Despite the fact that for my environment this functionality was enough, I think that Veritas should develop Replication Director and add more storage devices. I believe that now, as data grows really fast, backup software should not only copy data in a classic way, but should be able to manage snapshots and replication between storage devices. In fact, this applies to any enterprise backup software.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Any large products have their issues. I cannot say that the stability issues were unacceptable in comparison with TSM, Commvault, or Veeam, for example.
How are customer service and technical support?
I would give technical support a rating of 8/10. They are good.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
In the organization where I was previously, NetBackup replaced Backup Exec because Backup Exec did not have enough flexibility/scalability for the current environment.
How was the initial setup?
I've implemented several NetBackup installations and all of them run smoothly. However, if you are going to implement it for the first time, I really recommend you run some tests before doing so.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
If you have a complex environment with dozens of different servers and apps, I recommend you look for TB licensing. We decided to convert our per server licenses to simplify the license management.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
We did not evaluate other options.
What other advice do I have?
My recommendation is the same for any product. Decide what options you really need, and then test the required options. If the required options work fine, then implement the solution.

Stable software for backup and recovery that supports large-scale environments
Pros and Cons
- "Backup and recovery software with great stability, and can support large-scale environments."
- "What needs to be improved in Veritas NetBackup is its interface, e.g. they should make it more user friendly. Scalability for this product could still be improved, particularly its hardware appliance scalability."
What is our primary use case?
We use Veritas NetBackup for protecting our environment, e.g. the whole production environment is protected by this solution. We also use it for replication, so that it also serves as a backup solution for our production environment.
What needs improvement?
What needs to be improved in Veritas NetBackup is its interface, e.g. they should make it more user friendly. There are certain things we can only figure out in Veritas NetBackup through the help of their support team, so we are dependent on support. If you are not an expert, you won't be able to manage this product.
In the next release of Veritas NetBackup, I'd like to see better scalability in terms of the hardware appliance.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've been working with Veritas NetBackup for two years now.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The stability of Veritas NetBackup is great. I would rate its stability nine out of ten.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
You can scale Veritas NetBackup, but scaling it has limitations. In terms of scalability, I'm scoring it seven out of ten.
How are customer service and support?
Most of the time, the technical support for Veritas NetBackup is good, but at times, you'll feel there's a gap. Support for this product can still be improved, so I'm rating product support seven out of ten.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup for Veritas NetBackup wasn't straightforward, but because I had some experience setting it up, it was fine. Because I knew what to do in terms of the initial setup of this product, that helped me a lot.
What about the implementation team?
We implemented this solution in-house, and I did it myself.
What other advice do I have?
The solution I most recently used was Veritas NetBackup, and I'm still using it, particularly version 9.0. Currently, I use it for myself, e.g. for company purposes, but I did previously work as a service provider, so I used to support this solution.
I don't remember exactly how long the deployment of Veritas NetBackup took, e.g. it could have been 1 week, because it was set up in a big environment. I had to set it up step by step, and it was not that simple. I had to do it one step at a time.
We have 1,500 to 2,000 staff, and all their data is protected by Veritas NetBackup. Though they're not directly involved with this solution, e.g. they're not handling or managing it, they have some protection through it.
My advice to other people who are thinking of implementing this solution is that if they'll use it in a large-scale environment, it's very simple and it will serve its purpose, e.g. improving the man hours and improving finances.
My rating for Veritas NetBackup is eight out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

Great integration with third party applications, instant access to VMs and SQL data
Pros and Cons
- "Unauthorized people cannot log in and execute commands."
- "They currently have the Java concept and it should be less intensive and take less load."
What is our primary use case?
The primary use case of Veritas is generally for protecting data and storing it at a secondary site. Use of the solution is sometimes dependent on compliance requirements. Depending on the client, the solution can be deployed on-prem, on cloud, and sometimes using a hybrid option. I'm a solutions architect and a reseller of Veritas.
What is most valuable?
I like the NetBackup Appliance form factor, where your data is 99.9% safe because unauthorized people cannot log in and execute commands. It requires an admin password and includes IDS and IPS features. I also like the integration with third parties and third party applications, like instant recovery and instant access of the VMs and SQL data.
What needs improvement?
I'd like to see some simplification in the solution. They currently have the Java concept and it should be less intensive and take less load. The integration should be simple, not a script-based backup with minimum input and maximum output. The solution also needs more integration, even the infrastructure has become more complex. They currently have integrated containers and Kubernetes for backup but they could include backup of SQL or Oracle, or performance in the visualization process. All those things could be improved.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've been using this solution for six years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
There are no issues with the stability. I haven't had any problems with it.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
As a cloud structure, the solution is scalable. The only issue is that data size is more than 20 PBR and requires multiple media servers and an increase in LAN or CPU, to absorb the load on the master media servers.
How are customer service and technical support?
The technical support has improved and is much better than it used to be.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I've also used CloudPoint which is integrated with NetBackup in the 9.1 version. With NetBackup, I can take a VM level backup and file level backups; in CloudPoint you can take volume level backups. Currently there is no file level backups in the cloud whereas with NetBackup you can do that. In comparing NetBackup with a backup platform service controller, the PSC is great because it's simple to use, simple to install and the integration is very easy. NetBackup is for enterprise clients and therefore takes longer to learn.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup is very easy and there's no similar service.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
NetBackup is a little costlier compared to other products and backup PSC.
What other advice do I have?
I rate the solution nine out of 10.

Feature-rich, but they need better attack protection
Pros and Cons
- "It's a good product, it does what we want it to do."
- "In the next release, I would like to have a better way to protect against ransomware attacks and a better way of logging issues where you don't have to enable the verbose logging to capture the problems."
What is our primary use case?
We use this solution mainly for back up and to restore.
What is most valuable?
It's a good product, it does what we want it to do. It has a 99.8% backup success rate, and it runs 24,000 jobs per day.
We like all of the features.
What needs improvement?
The ransomware protection needs improvement.
The reporting tool that you get out of the box is not sufficient, so you have to purchase other tools or modules.
When it's out of the box, the visibility is a problem and it's not very clear. Overall, the visibility into the environment is lacking.
When you come across an issue to present to technical support, you have to enable the verbose logging, and when that happens you are generating huge amounts of log files. I have to wait for this problem to present itself again. I cannot leave it running on verbose logging, as it takes up the capacity from the logs. However, if I don't enable it then I won't be able to locate the issue.
In the next release, I would like to have a better way to protect against ransomware attacks and a better way of logging issues where you don't have to enable the verbose logging to capture the problems.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been working with Veritas NetBackup for eight years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Veritas NetBackup is stable. We have not experienced any issues.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
It's a scalable solution.
How are customer service and technical support?
We have a very strong team and haven't had to log many calls with technical support.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
We are happy with the pricing that we have, but it's expensive.
What other advice do I have?
Overall, I think that Veritas is a very good product and I recommend it.
It's an expensive tool but it does its job very well. It has a 99.8 % success rate.
I would rate Veritas NetBackup a seven out of ten.
