Good monitoring services with good reliability and the capability to expand
Pros and Cons
  • "Technical support is helpful."
  • "Having a Unix implementation or Unix installation could be an improvement. Right now, it's based just on Windows, and that's a problem for some customers."

What is our primary use case?

I use the solution to monitor the services for our customers or for ourselves.

How has it helped my organization?

The availability of services has been good. Getting the alerts for the critical services is quite helpful, and having the indicators of the business needs is great.

What is most valuable?

It's working fine. It gives us the information that we require so far.

The monitoring services it offers are great.

The solution can scale.

It is stable.

Technical support is helpful.

The initial setup isn't too complex.

What needs improvement?

Having a Unix implementation or Unix installation could be an improvement. Right now, it's based just on Windows, and that's a problem for some customers.

We'd like to see integration with other solutions like ServiceDesk software or an instant messaging app. We'd like to integrate all the information into other systems so that you can process and have different kinds of indicators.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've used the solution for maybe 15 or 16 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

There is maintenance required on the server, database, and files. That said, it is stable. There are no bugs or glitches and it doesn't crash or freeze.

I'd rate the ability to scale nine out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability potential is high. I would rate the ability to scale eight out of ten.

We have about ten users using the solution in our company. They are all engineers.

We do hope to increase usage in the future.

How are customer service and support?

Technical support is good. They are fine. They are in Germany. They may take a day or so to answer; however, they normally get back to us fast and assist us.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We have used other solutions in the past. For monitoring, this solution has been great.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is pretty straightforward. I'd rate it eight out of ten. It's very easy and not overly difficult to get everything set up.

The deployment times vary. It depends on the number of sensors, the type of infrastructure, et cetera. There are many factors, so you need to analyze every case.

We work with a couple of engineers dedicated to these solutions.

What about the implementation team?

We handled the setup ourselves, in-house. We didn't need outside assistance.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I can't speak to the exact pricing. I don't handle licensing.

What other advice do I have?

We are using the latest version of the solution.

We've deployed both on the cloud and on-premises.

Users need to know the solution to work with it effectively. They need to update and need to know all the specifics, including the features.

Also, users need to know what to monitor and what they need to monitor. They need asset management. They need to know the critical services that they want to monitor so that it can be clear for the tool. Before the implementation before the installation, they need to do that - all the configurations.

I'd rate the solution eight out of ten.

An easy initial setup with good stability and great reporting capabilities
Pros and Cons
  • "The initial setup is pretty easy."
  • "The licensing policy needs more flexibility."

What is our primary use case?

We use the solution to recollect data from past equipment.

What is most valuable?

The solution's most valuable aspect is its ability to make reports. We appreciate that in the tool. It could be to relay corrupt data information, and we tell ourselves that it's gone, however, tools for that are expensive in terms of the labor. To perform your analyses with this solution is easier. We can recover past data and make analysis effectively.

The initial setup is pretty easy.

What needs improvement?

The option to perform cross-correlated information about the server, I think could be better. This tool doesn't have this.

The ability to get another license if you need another tool, or to license specific aspects that may not be covered under your existing license could be better. Right now, it's not easy to switch contracts. The licensing policy needs more flexibility.

There may be some scalability issues.

For how long have I used the solution?

We've used the solution for several years at this point. It's been a while. It's been as much as perhaps nine or ten years now.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability is there when you implement this generic service. We had to migrate in a bad scenario, due to the fact that we suffered from several issues. I still implemented it in one server to collect all the information. The product worked well and maintained its stability in general.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

While I've never tried to scale the solution, the potential to scale looks fine. It's pretty dated, however, and I'm personally looking for another solution for that aspect.

We have about 20 people using the solution currently.

We're actually in the process of looking for another tool that would be able to collect information for us. I'm not sure if we'd increase the usage of this tool for that purpose.

How are customer service and technical support?

I've never dealt with technical support. We have an IT team that deals with issues and any problems are typically handled internally. I wouldn't be able to comment on their knowledgeability or responsiveness due to my lack of experience dealing with them.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I don't recall using a different solution in the past.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup isn't overly complex. It's straightforward.

The deployment took about three weeks across ten servers.

What about the implementation team?

We handled the implementation ourselves in-house. We didn't need any consultants or integrators to assist us.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I don't deal with the licensing or billing aspect of the solution and therefore can't speak to the exact costs of the product.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We might be considering looking into other solutions in the future.

What other advice do I have?

We're a customer and end-user. We don't have a business relationship with the company.

This solution's deployment is in the server through our machine. We have maybe eight or ten data machines with it.

I'd recommend this solution for larger implementations.

Overall, I would rate the solution at an eight out of ten.

A flexible solution that allows us to monitor many aspects of IT
Pros and Cons
  • "It is very flexible, and we can monitor many aspects of IT as well as ERP and CRM services. It has a very powerful interface and APIs for customization."
  • "Its price can be better. Its price is a problem for us because it is in dollars, and there is a high conversion rate. In terms of new features, it can have BGP monitoring. It should also have a dashboard and maps editor."

What is our primary use case?

We use it for some internet providers and educational institutes.

What is most valuable?

It is very flexible, and we can monitor many aspects of IT as well as ERP and CRM services. It has a very powerful interface and APIs for customization.

What needs improvement?

Its price can be better. Its price is a problem for us because it is in dollars, and there is a high conversion rate.

In terms of new features, it can have BGP monitoring. It should also have a dashboard and maps editor.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution since 2014.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is installed on a Windows Server, and its stability is very nice.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Its scalability is good. For on-premises deployments, the scalability depends on the hardware. For cloud deployments, the scalability depends on the number of servers.

Around 50% of our clients are small organizations and around 20% of our clients are big organizations.

How are customer service and technical support?

Their technical support is pretty good. As a reseller, we get fairly good support from them, and we also sell support services for our clients.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is very easy. An average implementation takes one to two hours.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It is expensive.

What other advice do I have?

They have a roadmap in which they have described all the features for the upcoming releases. This roadmap is available on their portal.

I would recommend this solution. I would rate PRTG Network Monitor a ten out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Within 24 hours of setup, we had a days worth of logs to look through
Pros and Cons
  • "The real-time monitoring and alerting are its most valuable features."
  • "Sometimes, it is difficult to drill down further to get information, e.g., if we saw spike in traffic, then we would want to drill down and find out what is causing that spike in traffic."

What is our primary use case?

It is for monitoring the up/down of our core infrastructure: Internally, the edge routers in our major occupancies, core switches, access switches, etc. It sort of give us real-time feedback for what is going on.

We use it to determine if a switch is up, our traffic is running optimally or at a normal rate.

How has it helped my organization?

We set up the solution, and it provided us with feedback on our IT infrastructure instantaneously. Because of the sensors that we are using, the graph started populating straightaway. Also, Pings and SNMPs were coming back straightaway. So, within 24 hours, we had a days worth of logs to look through.

Yesterday, we were having an issue with one of our major occupancies. We were able to quickly determine whether or not it was because of network performance. Because we could literally just look at the graph and screen on our wallboard, and say, "It wasn't because of network utilization."

It is easy to rule things out, or say, "Because we had this huge spike it traffic, it maxed out our line. Therefore, it was a bandwidth problem."

What is most valuable?

The real-time monitoring and alerting are its most valuable features.

What needs improvement?

Sometimes, it is difficult to drill down further to get information, e.g., if we saw spike in traffic, then we would want to drill down and find out what is causing that spike in traffic. Now, it could be because of the way we're using it, but we find that it' difficult to do, which is why we are using another product for this.

SolarWinds has server application monitors (SAMs), which we are using to check our processes on critical systems to see if they were to go down that we would get an alert for it. Because it's all network-based, it would be great if this was something that we could have included.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I have never seen it go down. I think it has only ever gone down when I have been messing with it and caused it to go down. The solution is nice and stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability is really good. At one point, I did enable a sort of clustering and found that much easier than SolarWinds.

SolarWinds clustering is an absolute nightmare, whereas clustering with PRTG, was ridiculously simple. In order to scale and add more load balancing, PRTG was a lot smoother and quicker to do it.

Obviously, there are different levels. We're currently limited to 100 sensors, but if we were to purchase an enhanced version of it, we could scale to whatever we purchased.

How are customer service and technical support?

I haven't used the technical support. I haven't needed them.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We were actually using PRTG before we were using SolarWinds. From the feature side of things, I don't think that we ever fully implemented and tested PRTG. Then, we started testing SolarWinds and found SolarWinds was giving us a more detailed reporting. So, that is the avenue we went down for actually purchasing a product. We chose SolarWinds, but we still keep a hold of PRTG for its real-time stuff.

How was the initial setup?

We just installed it, then started configuring sensors. That was about it. There wasn't much to it.

What about the implementation team?

We set it up in-house.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The historical data does not help us optimize our network performance, as we are not really using it to that level. We could, but because we are only on the free version, we have a limited number of sensors. Therefore, we are not monitoring as much as we want to be to obtain historical information.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We also have monitoring with SolarWinds, as well. What we find is that SolarWinds is great for reporting and delving back into logs, but PRTG is better for that instant on knowing what is going on right now.

There are quite a wide array of different sensors with PRTG. However, we are only really utilizing SNMP, Ping, and similar functions at the moment. Because our NetFlow data goes into SolarWind, we want that report inside it. We find SolarWinds better for this. Though, we know that we could do this if we wanted and put some NetFlow data into PRTG with its multiple different sensors.

We are not using the solution to its fullest capacity. At this point, I don't think we will because we are so involved with SolarWinds. We are getting out of PRTG what we want to get out of it, but we are not getting enough from it that we could ditch SolarWinds and move over to it.

What other advice do I have?

For the solutions features that we are using, they are great. We have no issues with the feature set.

I don't think we've ever used the desktop app, as I didn't know there was a desktop app. We just use the web.

Long term stability, with easy in-house deployment, for optimal results
Pros and Cons
  • "PRTG Network Monitor is a very stable product."
  • "I would like the ability to monitor Cisco IRS devices."

What is our primary use case?

We use it to monitor our network because we have a central site that connects to many remote sites, and we have primary and alternative links. We need to monitor both links for each site to be able to react when it is necessary in case of failure. It is beneficial for us to check the connectivity and bandwidth used in a particular channel.

What is most valuable?

There are good tools for monitoring purposes.

What needs improvement?

There are some restrictions for usage and sales that need to be ironed out for the country of Congo. I would like the ability to monitor Cisco IRS devices.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using PRTG Network Monitor for the past twenty-two years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

PRTG Network Monitor is a very stable product.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

PRTG Network Monitor is a scalable product even though there are currently restrictions in our country.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is straightforward and easy to deploy.

What about the implementation team?

We deployed PRTG Network Monitor through our own in-house team.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate PRTG Network Monitor a nine out of ten.

A stable and scalable monitoring solution with a useful integration
Pros and Cons
  • "The Slack integration is fantastic, and I've actually found it to be very useful recently."
  • "Integration into service management ticketing systems could be better. They should simplify the integration into big service management platforms like ServiceNow, Remedy, and Cherwell. They're really into monitoring, but they don't do any self-resolution. It would be better if the company moved more into the AIOps space so that you could actually kick off some remedies. I know that you can execute some commands from the tool, but you need to develop those all yourself. It would be really handy if they had some auto-remedy scripts that they could develop on top."

What is our primary use case?

We use PRTG Network Monitor for network monitoring. We mainly monitor uptime on our switches and our network environment, and we're looking at expanding into server monitoring as well.

What is most valuable?

The Slack integration is fantastic, and I've actually found it to be very useful recently.

What needs improvement?

Integration into service management ticketing systems could be better.

It would be really handy if they had some auto-remedy scripts that they could develop on top.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using PRTG Network Monitor for nearly ten years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

PRTG Network Monitor is very stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

PRTG Network Monitor is very easy to scale.

How are customer service and support?

The technical support was really good because I did get answers for what I was trying to do. They're very good.

How was the initial setup?

When we first built it, it was very simple, but we completely rebuilt our PRTG about four years ago with the help of an external partner. It took us about one or two months to deploy this solution.

We don't perform any maintenance as such. Just every now and then, we update to the latest version to keep it fresh. We're always interested in making sure that our environment is as secure as possible. That's why we always put in the latest code.

What about the implementation team?

We implemented this solution with the help of an external partner. Our experience with the external partner was good.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The price is actually on the cheaper side. If you're going with the unlimited license code, it's very cheap compared to competitors unless you're going for something free, like Zabbix. But you get what you pay for, and it doesn't have the full suite of products or tools like SolarWinds or a ScienceLogic.

What other advice do I have?

If someone were looking for a basic monitoring tool for servers and networks, I would recommend PRTG Network Monitor. If they're looking at the whole stack and potentially integrating with an ITSM platform or looking at it for something like CMDB correction as well, there are other tools that I would actually recommend. I would recommend something like ScienceLogic if they were looking for full-stack integration with ITSM, CMDB, monitoring, and auto resolution.

On a scale from one to ten, I would give PRTG Network Monitor an eight.
