True Image should be an industry standard

What is most valuable?

I've used Norton Ghost before, but switched to True Image almost 4 years ago and never looked back. True Image has a slew of enterprise and end-user features and the interface is both easy to use and simple to understand. I can schedule backups over the network to my dedicated file server or to local machines, and even restore from the network drives!

What needs improvement?

I can't think of a single one. Maybe it would be better if it was a bit cheaper, but good software is worth every penny.

What other advice do I have?

I exclusively use Acronis True Image for my Windows backup needs, both in the enterprise and at home. I haven't found a better solution that allows me to interact with a server and schedule automated backups over the network.

Acronis Backup and Recovery and True Image are two different tools. True Image is used for home computers. It protects your personal computer from hardware and software failure by backing it up. Whereas Acronis Backup and Recovery is a business oriented tool, designed for business purposes. It provides features like Active restore and VSS support.

Does its job very well and has interesting capabilities
Pros and Cons
  • "It actually does its job very well and has interesting capabilities, but it has the most awful interface."
  • "The whole product structure is confusing. You can actually get to do what you want to do. But Acronis seems to have a singular ability to make things difficult."

What is our primary use case?

We implement Acronis for our clients and we also use it internally.

What is most valuable?

It actually does its job very well and has interesting capabilities, but it has the most awful interface.

It's like there hasn't been any clear thought of linking process to the interface model. It's a very frustrating product but what it does, it does well, which is why even for all of those reasons we still standardize on it as our preferred backup solution. But it drives us mad.

What needs improvement?

I'll be completely honest, it's a very annoying product.

The whole product structure is confusing. You can actually get to do what you want to do. But Acronis seems to have a singular ability to make things difficult.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using Acronis Backup for a few years now.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It's stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It's scalable. We have around ten to fifteen users. The users are a combination of end-users and admins.

How are customer service and technical support?

Their technical support is excellent.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is slightly complex because the interface design is poor. So certainly, we've often had to scrap our strategies and go back and redo them. I would say that it's slightly complex to get to what you want.

You have to recognize that you might have to go and do it again once or twice until you get it working exactly the way you want it to work.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend it, but warn people new to it, to be aware that they might well be a bit frustrated at first.

I would rate Acronis Backup an eight out of ten. It's one of those products that probably needs an overhaul because it's kind of evolved over time and sometimes when you evolve things, you end up in a hole. It's probably about time for them to sit back and realize that they've made all this functionality and made all these changes so they should go back.

Also, managing the product is difficult. As a partner, it's difficult to manage our end-user clients because there's no single dashboard where we can go and see our clients and manage them individually. You have to set up an individual setup for each client, which is a bit frustrating.

I would like to see improvements for people that are probably doing an MSP type of approach, managed service providers so that they had a much simpler way to view their end-user situations.

A full software service product with quick deployment but lacking in technical support
Pros and Cons
  • "This is a full software so deployment time is very quick."
  • "No technical support and minimal documentation."

What is our primary use case?

I'm a solutions consultant and we're a customer of Acronis.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature of the solution for me is that it's a full software as a service product so deployment time will be very quick.

What needs improvement?

We're based in Hong Kong and I think if Acronis could provide local support and some local consultants that would be an improvement. I've just carried out the trial on the solution and actually there is no technical support available for this product. There is also minimal documentation available and if that could be improved it would make a big difference.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using a trial version of the product for two months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It's a stable solution.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability of the product is fine. It's a cloud product so you just purchase online. For now, I'm the only one in the company using the solution. Once testing is complete that will change.

How was the initial setup?

I'm using the software as a service, so there's no installation.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate this solution a seven out of 10.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

It works with different types of partitions or different OSs
Pros and Cons
  • "I have everything I need in the backup or in the partition. "
  • "It works with different types of partitions or different OSs."
  • "Stability is always good. I have used Acronis for 10 years now, if not more. I have never had a problem with availability, etc."
  • "I would change the GUI a little to make it a bit more interactive. It should have a slightly more updated look, not something which looks like it was designed five years ago despite the fact it is easy to follow and very appealing."

What is our primary use case?

I use it to basically backup my laptop and have several copies of it residing in different places.

It performs awesomely. I have been super thrilled with the results. The GUI is easy to follow.

How has it helped my organization?

I have a backup and can restore. I just restored a backup a month ago. It saved me because it had lots of work/business-related documents that I needed.

What is most valuable?

  • Ease of use
  • It works with different types of partitions or different OSs.
  • I have a Mac and a Windows-based computer, and it performs with both equally as well.

What needs improvement?

I would change the GUI a little to make it a bit more interactive. It should have a slightly more updated look, not something which looks like it was designed five years ago despite the fact it is easy to follow and very appealing.

For how long have I used the solution?

More than five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Stability is always good. I have used Acronis for 10 years now, if not more. I have never had a problem with availability, etc.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I am a personal user, so scalability is not really relevant.

How are customer service and technical support?

I have never had the need for support.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I was previously using the following:

  • Symantec, like P.q Magic.
  • Ghost, which is another competitor, for partitions and backup.
  • Something with Windows, like a basic backup solution and others.

A colleague of mine recommended Acronis Backup. He said, "You should try Acronis." This was when Acronis was not popular or common. Everybody was using the competitors' solutions. I tried it and it worked.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is super easy and super easy to follow; straightforward. That is the benefit of the ease of use with Acronis solutions.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I like the pricing, and that it is easy to use and has performed well.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I have tried other solutions, then I saw Acronis, and it did everything. It was an all-in-one solution for OS, Apple iOS, or Windows. Again, it was easy to follow.

What other advice do I have?

Try all of the solutions in the market. You will see for yourself that Acronis is the easiest to use and stable. It has never failed on me.

I have everything I need in the backup or in the partition.

Most important criteria when selecting a vendor: Good support if I ever need it. Therefore I would know that I have someone to contact, especially when considering this is a backup, thus it is crucial for it work properly.

Vendor
Version 12.5 Only Has A Web Interface However It Deploys Quickly From USB

What is most valuable?

Full image backup and fast image deployment from USB.

How has it helped my organization?

No.

What needs improvement?

Version 11.7 has problems with the database, some tasks need to be cleared by special scripts. Version 12.5 only has a web interface which is absolutely unacceptable for this type of product.

For how long have I used the solution?

Periodically, for the last 15 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

No.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Not yet.

How are customer service and technical support?

Fast, responsive, overall good.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

As long as Acronis continues to support Win XP, I will use Acronis.

How was the initial setup?

There was some difficulty setting up administrative groups and users, but that was related to the operating system, not the product.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I would advise getting the extended technical support which is independent of the licences.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Veaam. I found its usefulness to be very limited, very dependent on the operating system.

What other advice do I have?

Do backups on a regular basis.

An above average data backup and recovery tool with mediocre UI

Valuable Features:

1) One of the best data backup and recovery software out there in the market. 2) Can be configured to make complete backups as per a scheduled time frame. 3) Can create a disk image to a complete disk and the same can be used to restore to a fresh hard disk. 4) Various options like incremental backup, full backup, differential backup, etc. make the product highly useful. 5) Supports popular Operating System platforms like Windows & Linux. 6) Provides a sector-by-sector disk image creation facility. 7) Disk images can be mounted to read data. 8) Allows data synchronization between two PCs running Acronis Backup and Recovery.

Room for Improvement:

1) Installation is a lengthy process and consumes a lot of disk space. 2) Data backup time is comparatively higher than other similar products out there in the market. 3) The UI is not very user friendly and first time users will definitely struggle to get through. 4) PC to PC synchronization feature requires the end user to login using their Acronis accounts. This slows down the overall synchronization process. 5) Decrypting the data before reading from disk image slows down the overall process of data recovery. 6) There are many products in the market, which do similar things at a cheaper rate.

Other Advice:

One of the best data recovery tools available in the market. However, the installation consumes a lot disk space(1GB+), which results in slower system performance. It also lacks a Virus Scanning facility. Note that systems with Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) are not currently supported. It supports network based data backup and recovery, however network recovery quite often crashes the application.

Easy to deploy and suitable for a small organization with little or no knowledge of backup solutions, but should integrate with more platforms
Pros and Cons
  • "In my opinion, it's the best product for end-users and PCs."
  • "A little bit more integration would be good. It should support broader platforms."

What is our primary use case?

We use it for backing up local PCs and other things. We don't use it for Office 365. It is used for simple and basic use cases.

I am using its latest version.

How has it helped my organization?

We use it for some very basic stuff on the local machines. It is mostly used for drive-to-drive copy and file or folder restoration.

What is most valuable?

In my opinion, it's the best product for end-users and PCs.

What needs improvement?

A little bit more integration would be good. It should support broader platforms.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for 10 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Its stability is okay.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is scalable, but we have very few people who use this solution. We use it for very basic things.

How are customer service and support?

I have not contacted their technical support.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

It is used for something very specific. It is a very small percentage of the whole environment. For the enterprise part of the organization, we are using other solutions, such as Commvault and Veeam.

How was the initial setup?

It is straightforward. It has a three-clicks installation. There is nothing special, and it is pretty okay from this perspective.

What about the implementation team?

I can do it by myself.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We use the free version that provides very basic functionalities.

What other advice do I have?

If you're a small organization with little or no knowledge of the backup solution environment, it'll be okay for you.

I would rate it a seven out of 10.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises
