Offers multi-tenancy feature and interface is very refined, works fine, and is very intuitive but rocky implementation process
Many features that Arcserve proposes in its documentation and marketing material actually don't work properly in practice. Veeam is the most comparable solution, considering features and capacities. They are very similar, but Veeam works fine most of the time. With Arcserve, we have a lot of problems in implementing and getting compatibility, especially with legacy systems. We also have mysterious problems that no one can solve. The performance is not as planned or as intended. Our experience has been shaky. It's not very reliable as a tool, especially in critical cases like disaster recovery. So we've been working on migrating all our projects to Veeam and other similar solutions that offer comparable features. Reliability is not Arcserve's greatest strength – implementation is rocky, and sizings never work as planned. Plus, their cloud service is very slow and relatively expensive compared to Veeam.

Very cost-effective and well organized with good compression
It could improve its interface or offer a specific screen for the manager of the company. A managerial user who wants more information beyond the operational technician should be able to access it. It could include greater transparency regarding the volume of data trafficked on the network, as well as the expectation of deduplication. A more practical strategy could come with a backup policy model as a suggestion for both large and small companies. A simple suggestion is to visually implement the backup time as far as your physical media.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Instant recovery is the most valuable feature of Arcserve UDP."
"There are many backup options available in this solution. For example, you are able to do backups of servers, email, OST files, and users. This is a complete backup solution which is very good."
"The most valuable feature of StorageCraft ShadowProtect is the speed and the compression of the backups. The compressed backed-up files do not take up as much storage. Additionally, the incremental backups can be done in one minute and be backed up on a disc very fast."
"The recovery part of the product is very good."
"It is a very stable solution...It is a scalable solution."
"The interface is very refined, works fine, and is very intuitive most of the time. Scalability is nice. The multi-tenancy feature is very welcome. The integration with Linux works fine too."
"One of the things that I do like about it is that it has a very good deduplication feature."
"It allows us to back up all the servers and centrally manage them."
"Bacula is very solid, very stable, and very scalable."
"It works great and it provides you with several standard tools to restore your backup, even after a big failure."
"It brought many advantages - such as the learning curve being very light."
"Bacula is pretty stable."
"It is easy to scale Bacula Enterprise even if your system is growing tremendously in data and servers."
"The most valuable features are the special plugins such as SAP HANA databases, Microsoft SQL, and various types of virtualization."
"The solution has extensive documentation and a very active community."
"It can be used in virtually any environment we have onsite."

Cons

"The problem is just reliability. If the promises in the marketing material were realized in real life, it would be the perfect solution, but it's just the reliability issues."
"The solution can use a lot of bandwidth when the scheduling is not done, it should auto-schedule itself. For example, if there are 50 users connected in the network at 12 o'clock and the backup is not scheduled. At this time the network offices are going to have performance issues when it is doing a backup. Having a feature to auto-schedule a time when the network is not being used often would be beneficial."
"I had an issue with Arcserve UDP during the failover and the secondary machine didn't get back online, even though it ran automatically. I faced the issue during a crisis situation. However, I haven't faced such a problem again."
"We are looking at scaling up to the cloud and using immutable copies on the cloud. Arcserve UDP 8.0 does have the immutable feature supporting AWS, but I'm looking for multi-cloud support. So, I'm waiting for Arcserve to release that in the next release."
"Arcserve UDP is in the middle range of complexity. The interface can be developed a little bit more to be user-friendly."
"We have to use a Microsoft hypervisor for installation which is expensive."
"The speed of restores should be improved. We have found the speed of large restores rather slow."
"They could work on their marketing approach. I don't see many people leveraging it."
"Many features have been converted to commercial licensing, which restricts their availability."
"Easier setup and configuration, perhaps including a GUI, would be an improvement."
"We are looking for a unique interface that can rule both enterprise and open source editions. Such a thing does not yet exist."
"A more user-friendly interface (GUI) can be developed."
"It could improve its interface or offer a specific screen for the manager of the company."
"We would like to see an improvement in the functionality of the GUI."
"Bacula needs a graphical user interface because, for administrators, the command-line interface is okay, but for the average user it is not very easy."
"The initial setup could be a bit easier."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"I do not work with the pricing or licensing issues of the solution for our organization."
"The price of StorageCraft ShadowProtect is competitive in the market."
"There is an annual license required for this solution and it is priced well."
"The pricing of the product can be considered to be reasonable enough for the Asian region."
"Its price seems reasonable. Its price is average as compared to the other products I've looked at. We have a three-year license right now. There are no other costs beyond the standard licensing fee."
"The price of this product is high and it should be lower."
"The price is based on the number of sockets. We use a four-socket price that includes two servers and the cost is $4,375."
"It is a bit pricey, considering the reliability problems. If the tool worked flawlessly, the price would be fair, even cheap."
"We have a perpetual license."
"This is an open-source solution."
