We can know exactly what happened in what time with PurePath
Pros and Cons
- "We can know exactly what happened in what time with PurePath."
- "I would like to know if classes and methods selected in "Method Sensor Rules" were changed in the applications, and not depend on the developers to warn us."
What is our primary use case?
How has it helped my organization?
Developers have started to consult us (the Application Support Team) more than before AppMon had been implemented.
What is most valuable?
PurePath lets us see the steps of a transaction and the time of each one, then we can know exactly what happened in what time.
What needs improvement?
I would like to know if classes and methods selected in "Method Sensor Rules" were changed in applications, and not depend on the developers to warn us. Today, if the name of a class or method that I previously selected in "Method Sensor Rules" or in "Sensors" were changed, I am not aware of this. I will not know until I need some information on Dynatrace AppMon. Maybe just a warning if a specific method or class in "Method Sensor Rules" does not exist anymore in the application is enough.

We find the majority of the features very usable and valuable
Pros and Cons
- "Our main use is to monitor our applications for any issues that might arise and use the data to assure that our performance trending is headed in the right direction."
What is our primary use case?
Application Performance Monitoring. Our main use is to monitor our applications for any issues that might arise and use the data to assure that our performance trending is headed in the right direction.
How has it helped my organization?
- Monitoring of application performance
- Monitoring of infrastructure components
- Monitoring of user experience
- Code level performance metrics
What is most valuable?
We find the majority of the features very usable and valuable. Our focus would be on the ability to drill into our custom code and validate that it is performing as expected. The ability to monitor performance and create custom dashboards.
What needs improvement?
With new versions coming out, staying up to speed and training needs. Dynatrace provides this via many outlets, so finding resources to keep yourself relevant within the tool is not that challenging.
For how long have I used the solution?
One to three years.

It provides deep insight to code, quick root-cause analysis and quick bug fixing.
Pros and Cons
- "Quick root cause analysis"
How has it helped my organization?
At the moment, we are focusing on internal IT processes covering the entire application lifecycle. Later, we would like to work on EUE.
What is most valuable?
- Deep insight to code
- Quick root cause analysis
- Quick bug fixing
Dynatrace provides a clear view to application code; it reviews code to decide where to place check points to collect information. Based on that, it is able to specifically identify where in the code it is experiencing either an error, issue or performance trap. This also provides third-level support with a clearly specified place for resolution without needing to re-create the error. It reduces the amount of time required for communication between all of the support layers, as they can share the same info - what has happened, what was result, where it happened - so in the end, it leads to quicker issue resolution.
How are customer service and technical support?
Technical support is well-skilled and competitive.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
Dynatrace was chosen as our first solution.
How was the initial setup?
Initial setup was quite easy and straightforward. The solution by itself assigns a place for sensors. You just need to properly set ports and IPs.
What about the implementation team?
We implemented it almost entirely in-house, with some remote vendor support.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Pricing is based on the number of servers monitored, so for big applications, it is a bit expensive.
What other advice do I have?
First, make a detailed analysis of the purpose for such a tool, and then define detailed requirements they plan to achieve.

Auto-baseline detection for the API performance issues has helped to improve my organization
Pros and Cons
- "Dynatrace has an auto-baseline and uses AI to monitor the performance of each API. The response time is related to the baseline."
- "I would like to see the same features as in the New Relic Insights in the dashboard. That is the only thing I want to see improved in Dynatrace."
What is our primary use case?
We use Dynatrace to monitor the API performance of the server.
How has it helped my organization?
Dynatrace has an auto-baseline and uses AI to monitor the performance of each API. The response time is related to the baseline.
What is most valuable?
The most valuable feature is the auto-baseline because I don't have to set it with Dynatrace. With New Relic, we had some problems with the configuration.
What needs improvement?
I would like to see the same features as in the New Relic Insights in the dashboard. That is the only thing I want to see improved in Dynatrace.
For how long have I used the solution?
One to three years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Dynatrace is quite stable. I don't have any issues with it. With Dynatrace we need to upgrade and restart often. New Relic is more stable than Dynatrace.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
I have not had any issues with the scalability of either New Relic or Dynatrace. They are both quite scalable.
How are customer service and technical support?
Currently, we get the vendor support directly. Their support is adequate.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
Last time we were using another APM and the company discontinued the APM product, so we had to switch.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup of Dynatrace is quite easy.
What about the implementation team?
We implemented the installation ourselves without any issues or problems at all.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Our most important criteria when selecting a vendor are the features and local support of the agency. Those two along with pricing are very important.
The reason we eventually chose Dynatrace was for the automatic (auto-baseline) of detection for the API performance issues.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
We use New Relic as well in the same facilities.
What other advice do I have?
I will rate the software a nine out of 10 because they are able to help solve our issues for us even though we don't understand the system fully.
To make it a perfect 10, Dynatrace needs to implement the features from New Relic in the dashboard so that I can monitor my own performance. Even though New Relic is not as good as Dynatrace, I have to understand my own system. I set each parameter manually before every launch by five minutes.
I would suggest to prospective buyers to evaluate both Dynatrace and New Relic to see which features are best for your company.
If you are not sure about the system requirements, choose Dynatrace. If you understand your own system and know by seeing a network outline exactly what you need for support, then choose New Relic.

PurePaths, where you can see the stack trace, is helpful in finding problems
Pros and Cons
- "RCA (Root Cause Analysis) and the PurePaths, where you can see the stack trace, are helpful in finding problems."
What is our primary use case?
We're using it for monitoring our infrastructure, product reservation, so we're making sure that it's up 99% of the time.
We've been using it less than six months. As of now, it's working well.
How has it helped my organization?
Because we have a 15-minute SLA, we have to see the root cause of the problem or the alert, what's the issue. It helps us to determine, quickly, as much as possible, to know what the issue is, what the problem is, and where it is. Also, it's helpful when there is a correlation on all, on the whole service and applications.
What is most valuable?
- RCA (Root Cause Analysis)
- PurePaths, where you can see the stack trace and everything; that helps.
What needs improvement?
I haven't used it long enough to know what additional features might help. But I am looking forward to the Davis AI feature. That's exciting.
For how long have I used the solution?
Less than one year.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Right now, stability is okay. We haven't had any downtime.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Scalability is good.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We were using some old tools but we're decomissioning them and transferring to Dynatrace. We're also using currently using SCOM. So Dynatrace is an additional tool.
We brought on Dynatrace because it's an in-depth monitoring tool; we needed that. SCOM is not enough for our products, so we took another one for the troubleshooting.
What other advice do I have?
Regarding a single solution that could provide real answers, Dynatrace will help because it will give you a lot of data, based on what I've heard at this Performance 2018 conference. Because we have not yet been using Dynatrace for a very long time, at this conference I have seen that it will be very helpful because of all the data and information that it will give you. It's an end-to-end solution.
When selecting a vendor the most important criteria are, of course, the cost, the usability, and if it's successful in the market. Also, if it will give us what we need.
I rate this solution eight out of 10 because I'm seeing you don't have to update everything. Once you've applied the one agent, it will be automatically updated if you turn on the automatic update.
I would advise that you check it out and try it.

Ability to go from a high level performance view to a specific transaction
Pros and Cons
- "Dynatrace covers the important tiers and allows us to quickly find trends and root causes in all our critical application lifecycle steps"
- "It is not clear what are our long-term strategy should be to upgrade (Appmon vs Dynatrace)."
What is our primary use case?
Application performance diagnostics of our enterprise critical applications. Proactive monitoring of response times and trends. Performance and load testing of new versions.
How has it helped my organization?
- Helps us to quickly find performance issues with new applications or new feature introductions.
- Allows us to see response time, failure rate, user experience, and visualize trends.
- Root cause analysis of problems with live systems.
- Performance and load testing evaluations.
What is most valuable?
The ability to go from a high level performance view to a specific transaction. Dynatrace covers the important tiers and allows us to quickly find trends and root causes in all our critical application lifecycle steps (Ops, Dev, and Performance).
What needs improvement?
It is not clear which path the product will follow with Dynatrace in the cloud (or on-premise) and Appmon. As an existing customer who has invested heavily in training and using the Appmon version, it is not clear what are our long-term strategy should be to upgrade (Appmon vs Dynatrace).
For how long have I used the solution?
One to three years.
