Has a virtual standby feature, works out of the box, and is user-friendly
Pros and Cons
  • "Arcserve has a feature called virtual standby (VSB), which has been very helpful because I already have a hot standby copy of my critical infrastructure. If something breaks, I can spin up that virtual standby copy in less than five minutes and ensure that my data is available to everyone and that business continuity is maintained."
  • "We are looking at scaling up to the cloud and using immutable copies on the cloud. Arcserve UDP 8.0 does have the immutable feature supporting AWS, but I'm looking for multi-cloud support. So, I'm waiting for Arcserve to release that in the next release."

What is our primary use case?

I use the solution for disaster recovery and continuous availability. For example, if my DC goes down, I can spin up VMs almost instantaneously on my DR site. Plus, I have an Arcserve High Availability or Arcserve Continuous Availability license that helps me to keep a real-time in-sync copy of my SQL database on which my CRM tool runs. So, I can maintain a highly available SQL DB, one on-premises and one in the cloud.

What is most valuable?

Arcserve has a feature called virtual standby (VSB), which has been very helpful because I already have a hot standby copy of my critical infrastructure. If something breaks, I can spin up that virtual standby copy in less than five minutes and ensure that my data is available to everyone and that business continuity is maintained.

What needs improvement?

We are looking at scaling up to the cloud and using immutable copies on the cloud. Arcserve UDP 8.0 does have the immutable feature supporting AWS, but I'm looking for multi-cloud support. So, I'm waiting for Arcserve to release that in the next release.

I would like to see support for SAP HANA in UDP. We are looking for block-level backup or byte-level backup of SAP HANA because we are looking at migrating from the existing SQL to SAP HANA.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using it for almost eight years now.

The primary copy is on the on-premises storage, and the secondary copy is on AWS.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Arcserve UDP is pretty much stable, and as a result, it's a good go-to solution. I've been using it for the last eight years.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is scalable. If you have good infrastructure underneath the software, then, it's a very scalable solution. It's scalable in the sense that it can protect from 100 VMs to 1,000 VMs.

Also, the backups that I need to be retained for six years or seven years for compliance scale out very well on the cloud. So, I'm really happy with that.

How are customer service and support?

I would rate technical support at nine on a scale from one to ten. They have provided me with workarounds and solutions in a timely manner.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

How was the initial setup?

Arcserve is a very easy solution to deploy because the infrastructure and UI are very user-friendly. It's very easy to deploy. If I remember correctly, I deployed the apps or solution across my new virtualized infrastructure in less than 30 minutes. It worked out of the box.

What other advice do I have?

It works out of the box, and it saves my life a lot. When a server goes down, Arcserve has always restored those critical servers, so I would rate it at nine on a scale from one to ten.

Beneficial live replication and simple implementation
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable feature of Arcserve UDP is live replication."
  • "I had an issue with Arcserve UDP during the failover and the secondary machine didn't get back online, even though it ran automatically. I faced the issue during a crisis situation. However, I haven't faced such a problem again."

What is our primary use case?

Arcserve UDP provides security to our database and also it takes backup regularly, without human intervention. It's a replication and backup software.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature of Arcserve UDP is live replication.

What needs improvement?

I had an issue with Arcserve UDP during the failover and the secondary machine didn't get back online, even though it ran automatically. I faced the issue during a crisis situation. However, I haven't faced such a problem again.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Arcserve UDP for approximately two years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability of Arcserve UDP could improve.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Arcserve UDP is not a scalable solution.

How are customer service and support?

I have not used technical support.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We were using a different solution previously but after we did some market research we switched.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup of Arcserve UDP was simple. The process took approximately three hours.

I rate the setup of Arcserve UDP a four out of five.

What about the implementation team?

We did the implementation of the solution. However, you have to be aware of your systems and have some knowledge.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

There are annual subscription fees and there are licensing costs for three computers. It is an expensive solution.

I rate the price of Arcserve UDP a two out of five.

What other advice do I have?

Arcserve UDP has served its use case 100 percent for us.

I rate Arcserve UDP an eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Good deduplication feature, but the speed of large restores is rather slow
Pros and Cons
  • "One of the things that I do like about it is that it has a very good deduplication feature."
  • "The speed of restores should be improved. We have found the speed of large restores rather slow."

What is our primary use case?

It is a backup solution. We use it for small file restores.

How has it helped my organization?

We don't always have volume shadow copy enabled on various products. If someone deletes a file, this is what we use to restore the file.

What is most valuable?

One of the things that I do like about it is that it has a very good deduplication feature.

What needs improvement?

The speed of restores should be improved. We have found the speed of large restores rather slow.

It should also back up Office 365 mailboxes. It would be nice to be able to restore PST files. It might already be there in version 8, which is a new version, but I haven't looked at it.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for five or six years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It has been very stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is fine. As long as you have storage and licenses, you can throw it out to as many virtual servers or physical servers as you have.

In terms of its users, it is really just me. They call me when they have deleted a file.

How are customer service and support?

They're decent.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We hadn't used a previous solution. We tend to use Arcserve backup and the UDP together. So, we had nothing like UDP.

How was the initial setup?

It was pretty straightforward. It wasn't bad.

What about the implementation team?

We are the consultants who implement it. In terms of staff required for deployment and maintenance, it is really a nice one-person solution.

What was our ROI?

We just give people their files back.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The retail fee is $1300 for a year for one server. Other than that, there is just the cost of your hardware.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We didn't really evaluate other solutions. We were an Arcserve shop at the time.

What other advice do I have?

I would advise others to do large test restores and see if that's going to do it because we have had trouble with doing a restore of large amounts of data, and it takes too long.

I would rate it a seven out of 10. It is good.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Easy to use, easy to troubleshoot and largely issue-free
Pros and Cons
  • "The ease of use is the best feature of the product."
  • "Licensing can be quite difficult."

What is our primary use case?

The solution is used for image backup and recovery.

What is most valuable?

The ease of use is the best feature of the product.

The price point is quite good.

Troubleshooting is easy. I've never had critical issues and have been able to deal with the product on my own.

What needs improvement?

I don't have any notes for improvement. It's just a general tool.

Licensing can be quite difficult.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've used the solution for a while. I've used it for many years.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I only have 20 to 25 customers using the solution.

How are customer service and support?

I've never used the technical support services of the product. I can't say how helpful or responsive they would be. They have been responsive and knowledgeable about licensing questions. However, I've never used them for critical issues.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

How was the initial setup?

I simply buy their product and install it, typically for clients.

What about the implementation team?

I am able to handle the installation myself.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The solution is cumbersome in terms of licensing.

What other advice do I have?

I'm a reseller and independent consultant.

I'd rate the solution nine out of ten.

Stable single-server backup, with quick restore and good support
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable features are that it is able to restore quickly and that it is able to virtually restore on Hyper-V."
  • "Licensing is an area that needs improvement."

What is our primary use case?

I am a very small organization. I am a single person with a group of clients and most of them are five to ten seats.

I do onsite backups and I deal with ShadowProtect, and a couple of clients have moved up to their cloud solution. I will continue with this type of architecture for the small amount that I do.

We are using this solution almost exclusively for a single-server backup.

What is most valuable?

It's an extraordinary product. We've had ransomware several times over the last few years.

The most valuable features are that it is able to restore quickly and that it is able to virtually restore on Hyper-V.

What needs improvement?

Licensing is an area that needs improvement. I have had six support calls in the last two years all related to licensing because the license would stop all of a sudden.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with StorageCraft ShadowProtect for a few years.

Everybody has moved to version 6.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It's a very stable solution.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I believe that this solution is scalable, but it an area that I have not exercised.

How are customer service and technical support?

I have had very little contact with technical support. I tend to work through things myself.

When I have had contact with technical support, I was satisfied. They did a good job.

How was the initial setup?

The learning curve was about 10 years ago.

I guess maybe at first, it was complex, as none of those products were really matured at the time. It was in its infancy.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I don't pay monthly. I purchase the solution outright and use it until the license is done. I get my money's worth.

It is approximately $400 to purchase a virtual service outright.

What other advice do I have?

I would suggest that you do your backups and backup your backups. Always have multiple backups.

I would rate this solution a nine out of ten.

Works efficiently and great for data protection
Pros and Cons
  • "Easy restoration and the solution works quickly."
  • "Backups are very slow and time consuming."

What is our primary use case?

We use this product for its protection software and for backup. I'm a system administrator and we are customers of Arcserve.

What is most valuable?

The product makes restoration easy and the solution works quickly.

What needs improvement?

We do our backup to tape and data protection over the weekend and it's very slow. I have issues when I do a Snapshot for VMware to a machine and spend time working on it, and I have a problem and want to go back to the snapshot, Arcserve does a full backup all over again.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using this solution for around six years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I think the solution is stable but we had an issue with the JBot a while back. We wanted to add extra disks and when we tried to do that the entire backup was destroyed. The issue was not connected to Arcserve but it caused a huge problem for us.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I'm the only user in the company but it's a scalable solution.

How are customer service and support?

I've worked with customer support and they're quite good.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is simple. We used a third party for the implementation.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

Added security through encryption and password protection, but speed of snapshot-level backup needs improvement
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable features are the replication to the cloud and the deduplication."
  • "In the most recent version of premium plus the replication has been removed, and it should re-added to the solution."

What is our primary use case?

We are a solution provider company, and I work with vendors to find products for my customers. This is one of the solutions that we provide and have customers working with.

This solution is used to perform backups of servers, including information from the cloud.

We have experience with the on-premises and hybrid-cloud deployment models, including Microsoft Azure cloud.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable features are the replication to the cloud and the deduplication.

The encryption and password protection options are very good.

What needs improvement?

Taking a snapshot level backup with this solution is very slow compared to other products. The speed of this needs to be improved.

In the most recent version of premium plus the replication has been removed, and it should re-added to the solution. It is a big selling point.

It would be nice to have more features included with the ransomware protection.

The interface needs to be more user-friendly.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using this solution for three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability of this solution is good.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Scalability of this solution depends on the licensing.

How are customer service and technical support?

Technical support for this solution is very good.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We used to provide Veeam Backup, as well as Acronis. The pricing for continuous replication is higher than for this solution.

How was the initial setup?

This initial setup of this solution is straightforward. The deployment takes two days, maximum. One person can handle the deployment and maintenance.

What about the implementation team?

We perform the deployment of this solution for our customers.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Normally our customers purchase the premium plus license, rather than the standard one, which provides more options.

What other advice do I have?

This is a good solution because it offers multiple hybrid options. The same product can support local backup, cloud backup, and backup a server to the cloud as well. It is a complete portfolio available in a single product. When comparing to other products, all of the options are available.

I would rate this solution a six out of ten.

Quick backups, highly reliable, and fast setup
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable feature of StorageCraft ShadowProtect is the speed and the compression of the backups. The compressed backed-up files do not take up as much storage. Additionally, the incremental backups can be done in one minute and be backed up on a disc very fast."
  • "StorageCraft ShadowProtect can improve by making one console that can control backups of all desktops and servers in one place. Additionally, the recovery process of the backups is very slow and could improve. It's very slow when we went to recover a complete disc but to recover one file is very fast."

What is our primary use case?

I am using StorageCraft ShadowProtect on servers and desktop computers.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature of StorageCraft ShadowProtect is the speed and the compression of the backups. The compressed backed-up files do not take up as much storage. Additionally, the incremental backups can be done in one minute and be backed up on a disc very fast.

What needs improvement?

StorageCraft ShadowProtect can improve by making one console that can control backups of all desktops and servers in one place. Additionally, the recovery process of the backups is very slow and could improve. It's very slow when we went to recover a complete disc but to recover one file is very fast.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using StorageCraft ShadowProtect for approximately seven years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability of StorageCraft ShadowProtect is good.

We are using the solution on a daily basis.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

StorageCraft ShadowProtect is scalable, it can be expanded.

For larger enterprises, Veeam or Nakivo is best because of the centralized console.

How are customer service and support?

We have not had issues that we needed to contact support.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have previously used Nakivo and Veeam backup solutions. The main differences between StorageCraft ShadowProtect and the other two are in StorageCraft ShadowProtect we do not have a centralized console for backups of desktops, servers, or virtual servers.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup of StorageCraft ShadowProtect is simple and can be done in five minutes.

I rate the setup of StorageCraft ShadowProtect a five out of five.

What about the implementation team?

We did the implementation of the StorageCraft ShadowProtect in-house.

The solution does not require a lot of maintenance, but we have two people that can do the maintenance. We update it approximately twice annually.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The price of StorageCraft ShadowProtect is competitive in the market.

What other advice do I have?

I recommend StorageCraft ShadowProtect to others because it's a very fast backup solution, quick one-file recovery, and the price is reasonable. However, for people who need backup servers and desktops, there is not a central console, it has to be done separately.

I rate StorageCraft ShadowProtect a nine out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises
