Enables continuity in our company but needs to be more intuitive
Pros and Cons
  • "Continuing to use it enabled continuity of business."
  • "SAP needs to be more intuitive."

What is our primary use case?

When the company merged, we decided that we wanted to continue using SAP ERP because all the processes were much more mature, especially when it came to finance. The main value was the convenience for finance to run and manage the business.

The finance team was more comfortable using SAP, so that's why it was decided not to change the solution.

How has it helped my organization?

I wouldn't say it has improved the organization. The company was already using it before we merged.

Continuing to use it enabled continuity of business. It eliminated strife or angst for the employees in terms of experiences since they were already using SAP ERP.

What is most valuable?

We're using the main database. We're using the leave modules and transfers.

What needs improvement?

SAP needs to be more intuitive. It should be easy to use, mobile, and employee-friendly. You need to know the transaction codes. You need to study it to be able to use it. SAP needs to change that. They need to be more intuitive. Like how Facebook is so easy to use, or Uber. No one teaches you to use these apps, but they're intuitive and you're able to use them. So the HR applications need to be the same way.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using it since 2018. Before that, I implemented SAP ERP in my previous job and used it for two years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It's very stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It's scalable.

There are currently 8,000 users who use SAP in my company. Our IT team maintains it.

We do not have plans to increase usage. SAP has said that they are dropping the ERP part. They advise moving on to SuccessFactors for HR. SAP themselves has said not to go forward with more usage, but to change the system.

How are customer service and support?

It has good support.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We previously used Oracle. When the company merged the new finance team preferred SAP, so HR also had to move along with the finance team.

How was the initial setup?

The company was already using SAP ERP when we joined, so I didn't have to do any setup here. But in my previous job, we did set it up.

It wasn't straightforward. We had to first align the HR processes. IBM was the implementation partner. We had to speak with SAP and also IBM. They understood our processes and they proposed the best solution. Some parts we did not agree to, so there were workarounds, but it went through. Once the design architecture was finalized, the implementation was smooth.

The deployment took six months.

What about the implementation team?

IBM was the implementation partner.

What other advice do I have?

On a scale from one to 10, I rate SAP ERP a five.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Significantly reduces the time required to produce our financial reports
Pros and Cons
    • "SAP is not making a big effort to make it easy to integrate solutions from other vendors. It's not easy at all... Integration is what they can do better."

What is our primary use case?

We're using it for accounting, materials management, and sales and distribution. We are happy with SAP solutions. We are in the dairy products industry here in Chile, and there are good solutions for SAP in this industry.

How has it helped my organization?

The best improvement that we have seen using SAP solutions is that it shortens the cycle when creating financial reports. Before we installed SAP solutions, we had to do about 10 days of work to create the account reports for the managerial board. Now, ita takes about three days of work to do it. We are able to give information to the board in a more agile way.

    What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature is the security. We have a very small IT team in our company, so a lot of the maintenance has to be done by the provider. So SAP gives us the maintenance and software solutions that we need.

    What needs improvement?

They are not making a big effort to make it easy to integrate solutions from other vendors. It's not easy at all. When you have solutions from other vendors, SAP is not doing a good job integrating them.

SAP is giving us the solutions that they provide. They buy companies. They buy solutions. And they expect that we will choose the solutions that they buy. I suppose that's the reason that they are not making a big effort in making it easy to work with solutions from other vendors. I imagine Oracle is the same.

Integration is what they can do better.

For how long have I used the solution?

    More than five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It works well. In our company, we don't have issues with stability. We haven't had any in 10 years, and that's a long time.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We don't have scalability problems. We can go 100 times our volume of transactions and we won't have any problems with it. We are not a very big shop so we don't have any problems, nor do we think that in the future we are going to have trouble with it.

How are customer service and technical support?

We don't have problems with support. However, it's not as good as it used to be. In the past, they gave better support. I imagine they want you to go to Gold Support, or Platinum, or Titanium Support. We are using Standard Support, and it's good for us. We don't need anything more for the time being.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We were using an ERP that didn't have a big company behind it. The company started to have financial problems, the stock price went from $200 to about 10 cents. So we thought the solution would no longer be supported, and we didn't want to have our financials and materials management in software that didn't have a big company behind it.

So we started looking at ERP solutions in our industry. Here in Chile, the best option was SAP ERP. We spoke with people in the same industry in Argentina, Uruguay, and Brazil. They had no problems with it, so it was the natural option for us to go with ERP from SAP.

When selecting a vendor the most important factor is the vendor's availability. We don't want to find that our provider has problems with availability. When we have a problem, they have to have a solution. The provider has to have a lot of clients that are similar to us, and it has to have been providing the solution for a long time. That way, if we are going to have problems, somebody has had them before and there will already be solutions for them.

    How was the initial setup?

I was involved in the setup and it was not easy. We had to bring a technician from another country, from Brazil. He had to come for three to four weeks to do the installation. So it wasn't easy at all.

But once they did it, they documented it. So today, it's not that hard because we have everything written. Today, we can install another system and do it with internal IT staff. So we learned from the process.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

PeopleSoft was on our shortlist at that time, although today it's Oracle. But they made it very hard for us to go with them because they didn't want to do meetings. They didn't respond to our calls. That was the worst kind of vendor you can find when you are looking for a new one.

There was another, Meccano, here in Chile. It wasn't on the same scale as SAP ERP. So we went for the sure bet and went with SAP.

What other advice do I have?

Check and double-check the fine print of the contract. Also, find a hardware provider that can scale to the volume of your business, and have a hardware provider that already has implemented solutions. In our case, IBM made a mistake when sizing the server that we needed and we had three months of performance problems. It wasn't the fault of SAP, it was the fault fo IBM. It was a bad way to start with a new system, but they didn't have enough experience in sizing the server for the solution.

I give the solution an eight out of 10. Everything works well enough, but something that could be better is their ability to work with customer's processes in the way the customer does them. I understand that they propose best practices, but when you have been in your industry for 50 years, you know what the best practices are. So you are not always going to change your process because your ERP provider thinks there are better ways.

Users have to deal with a complex setup phase
    Pros and Cons
    • "The tool can be very much customized."
    • "I think we have not seen any tangible benefits from SAP ERP."

What is our primary use case?

I use the solution in my company since I am responsible for business digitalization. The tool is used and it is a part of the top-down strategy. My company wants to use the tool since we want a digitalized ERP or to meet the requirements of the authority. The tool is used to meet the needs of the medical product authority and other national regulation authorities.

I think it's a very decentralized solution built for all different business units, so it acts as a separate solution on SAP.

    What needs improvement?

In our company, we have an old system, so the effort to update to HANA was too big for all the ERPs. I think we will update only the ERP part to SAP HANA, and we can build the rest. For communication and CRM, we can build a portal so that we can directly communicate with our users or customers. The tool can be very much customized.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using SAP ERP for fifteen years. I am a customer of SAP.

    How was the initial setup?

The product's initial setup phase was very complex, and you can have all the tools to build the process from business, and it depends on the system or on the SAP and not on the other way around. I have a lot of tasks that I have to do because the system says that they are without value, so I would like to change it, and go for digitalization. I have several solutions, one of which is Camunda for process automation. Camunda can be used for process management, documents, and enterprise management.

    What was our ROI?

I think we have not seen any tangible benefits from SAP ERP.

What other advice do I have?

I am not satisfied with the tool.

I use an old ERP tool, so it makes no sense to rate the product. I want to update it to a new architecture. I think SAP is an old ERP.

I rate the tool a one out of ten.

ECC has poor ergonomics. Finance view across functions is valuable, and the platform facilitates the automation of transactional processes
    Pros and Cons
    • "Finance view across functions is valuable."
    • "It automates transactional processes."
    • "Poor ergonomics."

What is our primary use case?

European migration in the 2000's was the main reason to change. The legacy mainframe bespoke application was difficult to maintain.

How has it helped my organization?

We were able to consolidate various obsolete IT systems 15 years ago in the context of merging several companies into a more integrated business.

    What is most valuable?

Finance view across functions has been valuable. The platform has been used to automate transactional processes.

    What needs improvement?

The ergonomics of ECC were poor and unattractive to newcomers, as businesses expect process streamlining.

For how long have I used the solution?

    More than five years.

Very mature with good procurement and payment processing aspects
    Pros and Cons
    • "The solution is very mature."
    • "The user interface isn't as nice as SAP HANA's."

What is our primary use case?

We are using the solutions from anchoring to sketching all the business processes and documentation. It can be used in everything from manufacturing to finance or even marketing. Every process you can fit inside ERP.

    What is most valuable?

The solution has many valuable features.

The procurement and payment processing aspects are very helpful.

The product launch capabilities and plans for builds are very good.

When compared to, for example, Oracle, this solution is much, much bigger.

    The solution is very mature.

Technical support has been very helpful.

We've found the solution to be very stable.

    The scalability is good.

Users will find the initial setup to be pretty straightforward.

    What needs improvement?

Overall, the solution isn't lacking any features.

What the company can get out of the solutions very much dependant on the users. They need to be knowledgeable about the product.

The user interface isn't as nice as SAP HANA's. They need to work on improving it in future versions.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have used the solution for the past four years at this point. It's been a while.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability has been very good so far. There are bugs and glitches. It doesn't crash or freeze. It's very reliable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is very easy to scale. IOf a company needs to expand it, it can do so.

It's also very easy to integrate with other solutions and legacy systems.

We have about 500 users on the solution currently. We use it quite regularly.

How are customer service and technical support?

we don't really deal with technical support very often. They are pretty efficient and they respond on time. So far, we are satisfied with the level of support provided.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We're in the process of moving to SAP S4 HANA. S4 will provide all the business processes required. Whatever you need it has on offer.

    How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is simple. It's not complex. You have a range of requirements on the system, therefore, you don't need more complexity configuring the system.

While we used a business partner who assisted us originally, we now have the internal knowledge to handle everything in-house.

Our IT handles any aspect of the maintenance that might be required.

    What about the implementation team?

Originally, it was configured by a business partner in Pakistan.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing is modular. You are charged according to the business process you want to take advantage of. However, it's a bit better than Oracle. For example, if I am using Oracle's finance and manufacturing modules, I need two licenses, however, in SAP, we only need one license that captures all processes we're using.

There are no additional costs beyond the central licensing.

What other advice do I have?

We are just a customer and an end-user of the solution. We don't have a business relationship with SAP.

We are in the final migrating phase from SAP ERP to SAP S4 HANA. We hope to finalize it within the year.

I'd recommend the solution to other users. I would rate it at a ten out of ten.

An ERP solution used in the finance and logistics area with Universal Journal feature
    Pros and Cons
    • "The solution is very stable."
    • "There is room for improvement in the integration of the solution, especially in the payroll area."

What is our primary use case?

My experience is in finance and logistics. We use it for Treasury accountants, GL (General Ledger), Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, etcetera. It's actually with the SAP solution, maybe for treasury banks, managing bank accounts, and other solutions within SAP ERP.

    What is most valuable?

The integration is a valuable feature. Actually, in S/4HANA, the most valuable part for me is the Universal Journal because, in one table, you have all financial topics or financial data. So it's very easy to report and manage this information and consolidate, for example, the intercompany transactions and manage treasury cash flow. For me, the most important part is the Universal Journal.

    What needs improvement?

There is room for improvement in the integration of the solution, especially in the payroll area. Usually, mid-sized companies need a separate solution for payroll because the existing parts are from a different system. So, many companies require better integration of payroll into the ERP, especially for small and mid-sized companies.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using SAP ERP for ten years, and currently, our company is the partner.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

    The solution is very stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability of SAP ERP is very good, allowing companies to grow and expand their operations in various areas and industries. The scalability is the best.

How are customer service and support?

Customer service and support are good.

How would you rate customer service and support?

    Positive

    How was the initial setup?

The initial setup of SAP ERP is very easy because it provides best practices and building blocks. In the last version, it has greatly improved. For example, the user experience is now completely for the user. Users do not require training because the latest version of SAP HANA is very easy to use.

    What was our ROI?

There is ROI in three years of business operations.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

SAP is now the cheaper option, but if you compare pricing and the scope of the solution, SAP is the best option in terms of pricing because the scope is more comprehensive than other cloud solutions.

What other advice do I have?

Overall, I rate the solution a nine out of ten.

Seamless integration, plenty of features, but support could improve
    Pros and Cons
    • "The most valuable feature of SAP ERP is the integration. It can be seamlessly integrated across the board."
    • "The user interface can be more intuitive and user-friendly by having it be more menu-driven, this would be a large benefit."

What is our primary use case?

We use SAP ERP for running the entire business enterprise. Most large companies run an ERP for their supply chains. Starting from taking orders all the processes through to delivery, such as finance.

    What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature of SAP ERP is the integration. It can be seamlessly integrated across the board.

    What needs improvement?

The user interface can be more intuitive and user-friendly by having it be more menu-driven, this would be a large benefit.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using SAP ERP for approximately 20 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

SAP ERP is reliable and stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

    The solution is highly scalable.

How are customer service and support?

There are different levels of support, with some requiring additional fees. I am not happy with any of the support I have received from SAP ERP.

    How was the initial setup?

The initial implementation is very complex. It is a very large complex system.

    What about the implementation team?

SAP ERP is a complex system, it takes a lot of people to maintain it. Depending on many factors of the implementation environment would determine the number of required maintenance or support staff. However, at least eight to ten people are the minimum required only to maintain and support SAP ERP. This number does not include the business or functional side of the operation of the solution, this number is only for the infrastructure side.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The solution can cost approximately $1 million a year for maintenance for a small-size company and can grow from there. Approximately $1 million is needed for a good-size company.

What other advice do I have?

SAP ERP is one of the best solutions. It's complex, but it can do a lot of things. If you are considering implementing SAP ERP, make sure you have a business process straight before you implement such a large solution. Streamline your business process and try to achieve standardization, instead of trying to customize things, use industry standards.

I rate SAP ERP a seven out of ten.

Best for transactional integration of operations, but lacks in reporting
    Pros and Cons
    • "The transactional integration of operations is the best-recommended feature of this product. It provides integration of all operational modules."
    • "The version that we are using lacks in reporting. The reporting feature needs to be constructed more in this product. There can be better scope for mobility. They could include the technical development of reports instead of depending completely on programming. The programming method needs to be easy."

    What is most valuable?

The transactional integration of operations is the best-recommended feature of this product. It provides integration of all operational modules.

    What needs improvement?

The version that we are using lacks in reporting. The reporting feature needs to be constructed more in this product.

There can be better scope for mobility. They could include the technical development of reports instead of depending completely on programming. The programming method needs to be easy.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using SAP ERP for around nine years.

We are using the ECC EHP 8 version, which is not the latest one. SAP HANA is the latest one.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

There is not a very simple answer to this. The version that we are using is not too stable. The newer version seems to be good, more scalable, and more stable. We are yet to evaluate the newer version of this.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is scalable. We have around 180 users. We have licenses for 250 users, but 180 users are actively using the system.

How are customer service and technical support?

We get technical support from our external consultants. Whenever required, we also directly get technical support from SAP for any information. There is a waiting time for it.

    How was the initial setup?

It was complex. As we moved forward, we slowly got used to it. I won't say it is straightforward now. It is still complex, but somehow we got used to it, and we are working with it. The deployment took around eight months.

    What about the implementation team?

    We used external consultants.

What other advice do I have?

You need to be well prepared to implement this solution. The most important thing is that there should be management involvement. It should not be left alone to the IT team or the applications team. The key to the success of any ERP is the involvement of the management.

I would rate SAP ERP a six out of ten. I won't rate it more than the average scale. This rating is based on the experience with the current version, which has a lot of scope for improvement. If I use the latest version, I might move the ranking up.

I have heard that the newest version has some capabilities to overcome the issues faced by the users in the present version. We are planning to implement the newer version. The industry or the current situation is holding us back. After we are out of this pandemic situation and the industry downturn, we will, of course, implement it.
