It shortened the interval between raw data and actionable insight.

What is most valuable?

  • Easy interaction with data
  • Variety of visualizations possible
  • Integration with R and Alteryx

We do a lot of work for our clients helping them understand the impact of marketing campaigns on their business results. Tableau helps us tell stories with data.

How has it helped my organization?

It helps us shorten the interval between raw data and actionable insight. We used it to standardize basic tracking and optimization functions for our digital media campaigns. We’re also developing a broader analytics practice, diving into the impact of on-line and off-line media combined.

What needs improvement?

There is a pretty steep learning curve, the product would be better if it were somehow more intuitive to use.

For how long have I used the solution?

I’ve been using Tableau for about three years.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

We have a small number of licenses with one Tableau server; we haven’t had any deployment, stability or scalability issues yet.

How are customer service and support?

Generally, technical support is very good; responsive with generally effective solutions.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We primarily used Excel prior to Tableau. We are aware of some of the others, but for us, it is not worth investing the time re-inventing our process.

How was the initial setup?

Initial setup went well; straightforward to install and get started. Takes a while to master the basics.

What about the implementation team?

Implemented in-house. It would be helpful to have someone with a year of Tableau experience on staff to speed ramp up.

What was our ROI?

ROI is difficult to estimate as a lot of our use case revolves around streamlining internal processes / analysis. We are now providing analytic solutions to clients where we price on our hours, plus pass through costs for seats on the Tableau Server and a monthly maintenance fee. As we scale this up, we expect to drive profitable revenue through our analytics products.

What other advice do I have?

It makes sense to implement it in tandem with Alteryx. Use Alteryx to clean / prep data, and then visualize in Tableau. Tableau is not the place to try to clean / join data.

The future of BI Tools is here with Tableau.

What is most valuable?

1. Data Blending - the ability to blend data from multiple data sources to create the report that is needed.

2. Quick and meaningful visualizations - Tableau's drag and drop features provide on the fly reports that often don't take more than a minute to create.

3. Tableau Server Subscriptions - Gives end users the ability to quickly subscribe to a dashboard.

4. Awesome support! - The Tableau help-desk and server support teams are out of this world. Have a question, shoot them an email and get a response quickly. They also have a phenomonal website (tableausoftware.com) with traning videos, a knowldge base, and plently of Tableau experts to help work through calculations and dashboard building.

How has it helped my organization?

We no longer need to rely on certified report creators to create reports and dashboards. Just connect to data and start building. Plently of free training availble online at tableausoftware.com for first-time users. Allows for independancy from IT.

What needs improvement?

The tool is not perfect, but with each release issues are getting resolved and performance is getting better. There is an awesome "Ideas" page on their website that allows users to submit ideas for improvement and vote on ideas that they would like to see added into any of the Tableau products. Tableau does a great job of moving these ideas from conception to reality.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Our company used Cognos Planner and a few other BI solutions before. Tableau is less expensive and easier to use. An easy choice to make the switch.

How was the initial setup?

Pretty straightforward. Tableau gives great instructions. My only complaint is that they make assumptions on how your company handles security ceritifcates when using SAML. It took us some time to work though SAML configuration, but once we passed this hurdle, everything else was easy to put in place.

What about the implementation team?

The intial server setup was done with an in-house team. When we expended our environment, we brought a vendor in to make sure we were implementing everything occurding to our business needs. The vendor, recommmended by Tableau, was professional and we were able to get the job done quickly.

With a straightforward initial setup phase in place, the tool is useful for businesses to analyze their sales and service inventory
Pros and Cons
  • "Tableau's initial setup was straightforward."
  • "I don't have the ability in Tableau to create a tooltip and see the picture of a piece of jewelry or watch that is a best seller."

What is our primary use case?

I use Tableau in a jewelry company to analyze sales and service inventory.

What is most valuable?

I can't comment on the valuable features of Tableau. I am familiar with some of the other tools, but I can't point out one specific big feature of Tableau.

What needs improvement?

A specific thing in Tableau is that I have looked at how to add pictures to the reports. I don't have the ability in Tableau to create a tooltip and see the picture of a piece of jewelry or watch that is a best seller.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Tableau for over five years. I don't remember the version of the solution I am using, but I feel it is the upgraded version. Maybe the server is not the latest one, which might be behind by a year. I am a customer of the solution.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Tableau does break down a little bit. The server version of Tableau doesn't allow you to see what is going on, making it a part of Tableau that is not great. Tableau's server version doesn't provide the ability to extract the information to see why the reports or dashboard didn't run properly. When you refresh in Tableau, you can't see what it's doing, and nothing happens since it doesn't show you what's going on, and then Tableau gets fixed all of a sudden.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

One of my biggest problems is getting all the users to use Tableau, but that's not a specific problem of the tool alone since it is one of the most common problems among BI tools.

I only have ten Tableau licenses that are used in my company.

How are customer service and support?

I have only sought some local support within Israel for Tableau. The only way to solve the problems in Tableau is through checking on forums.

How was the initial setup?

Tableau is deployed on-premises.

Tableau's initial setup was straightforward. When you need to make complicated dashboards, that can be very difficult in Tableau, but the initial setup was very quick. Connecting the data sources was very easy in Tableau.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing for Tableau is the same as the other products in the market. I haven't checked Tableau's price recently, but I don't think it is a factor when choosing the tool.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Before choosing Tableau, I had checked QlikView, which is now Qlik Sense, and I preferred the way Tableau works over Qlik Sense. Tableau made me feel independent and not dependent on programmers, making it more user-friendly.

What other advice do I have?

I would look at Microsoft Power BI. I am unsure if I would push Tableau since it is not a widely used tool. I don't know if others in the field of jewelry use Tableau.

Overall, I rate the solution between a seven and eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

Provides good visibility, dependable and has adequate technical support
Pros and Cons
  • "From my perspective, it enables clients to better understand our data and make better decisions based on that information."
  • "I take a long time to process the hundreds of thousands or millions of records that must be processed every day."

What is our primary use case?

We use Tableau, to retract, and for visualizing data.

I primarily use it at my company, but I do some implementation as well, with a teammate.

Tableau is used to visualize analyzed data for our customers.

What is most valuable?

From my perspective, it enables clients to better understand our data and make better decisions based on that information.

What needs improvement?

I would look at Tableau's security and performance. I take a long time to process the hundreds of thousands or millions of records that must be processed every day. I am hoping that it can be improved very soon.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with Tableau for the last three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Tableau is a stable product.

How are customer service and support?

I would say that the technical support is adequate. We are unsatisfied with the support because every time we have a new problem, it will go to tier 1, and the tier 1 will take several days to reply to us, and then the result is not very satisfying, as we are still stuck with the problem. It is then escalated to tier 2, or sometimes tier 3, which can take about two or three weeks, as an estimated length.

Definitely, technical support could be improved.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

In a previous company, I worked with IBM Cognos to focus on data, for instruction saving and loading that data in a very efficient way.

I also use other types of data extraction, such as Vanilla. It's a new software from France that is being used by a number of non-government organizations to restore data.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is quite complex.

What about the implementation team?

We completed the setup ourselves.

What other advice do I have?

I recommend that they install it using a virtual machine or Docker first, as they may encounter issues with other projects if they are running on the same server.

I would rate Tableau an eight out of ten.

Very easy data analyzation; user friendly
Pros and Cons
  • "Very user friendly."
  • "Implementation requires a technical background."

What is our primary use case?

We use this solution to create dashboards, analyze data and create presentation of data to have discussions with clients. We also use it to sort huge amounts of data.

What is most valuable?

The solution is very user friendly, particularly in terms of the ease of analyzing data.

What needs improvement?

Tableau would be difficult to implement without training or the in-house technical support we have.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using this solution for three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability is very good, especially now that they've joined with Salesforce.

How are customer service and technical support?

We have support from within the company.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is straightforward because the solution is already set up in the company. It was just a matter of requesting it and downloading.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We have a global package but I'm not involved in licensing and don't know the cost.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I had a look at Qlik but didn't get a chance to really evaluate the benefits from one platform to another, other than what you find on the internet.

What other advice do I have?

I rate the solution nine out of 10, there's always room for improvement.

User-friendly, makes it easy to visualize data, and is easy to set up
Pros and Cons
  • "It's very easy to visualize data with this product. The visualization maps of and frames that we have been able to cross-reference has been excellent."
  • "The pricing is high. I'm using a student license, however, I know that even this license is very expensive. I've tried to have this product in our organization, however, it's quite expensive. We don't have the internal budget."

What is our primary use case?

I primarily use the solution for data visualizations. For example, for analysis in my job, you can use a cloud of words and data with zip codes that you can then use to pull up maps. It's very powerful. You can use also use it to create tables and data frames. You can cross-reference a lot of variables.

I just used the product to review data and for data visualization. For example, I was studying the numbers surrounding COVID-19. We were cross-referencing zip codes and data of infection in Brazil, and we are creating an assessment of regions in Sao Paulo state as COVID-19 was growing, so that we could suggest political actions to mitigate the risk of contamination.

What is most valuable?

It's very easy to visualize data with this product. The visualization maps of and frames that we have been able to cross-reference has been excellent.

It's extremely user-friendly. You can cross a lot of variables. It's much easier, for example, than Excel.

What needs improvement?

I'm not sure if the solution needs any improvements. It's the best solution we have here right now.

The pricing is high. I'm using a student license, however, I know that even this license is very expensive. I've tried to have this product in our organization, however, it's quite expensive. We don't have the internal budget.

If you're looking for other kinds of data, for example, non-structured data, they could make it much easier to use this kind of data. Tableau could create other features just for data visualization and non-structured data. It's a beautiful solution when you've got frames and tables. It's structured. However, if you don't have this kind of information on the data, it's quite difficult to use Tableau. I would say that if you have any feature that opens the opportunity to work with non-structured data, it would be excellent. For example, we do end up creating a lot of word clouds. With unstructured data it just doesn't translate quite right.

If you could use non-structured data to count the frequency of important words to find which word is more important, for example, that would be useful. I don't see Tableau doing this - counting the frequency of important words in a specific kind of text.

It would also be great if there was statistical modeling for non-structured data.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the solution for more than six months. It's been less than a year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I don't work with large amounts of data. I don't have millions of data points. In terms of how I use the product, I've never had issues with stability.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It the solution was better with non-structured data, its scalability might be very good.

I just have the student license for myself. There aren't a large number of people in our company that use it.

How are customer service and technical support?

I've never had a reason to contact technical support. Having never dealt with them, I can't speak to their level of knowledge or responsiveness. It's so simple to create my own account and use it, I've never had a reason to reach out.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup isn't too complex. The entire solution is pretty user friendly from beginning to end.

The deployment, in total, took less than three weeks.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The solution is quite expensive.

What other advice do I have?

We're just a customer. We don't have a business relationship with Tableau.

I currently have a student license. I'm not sure which version I currently have. I mostly leverage the solution for personal use.

I would warn those considering the solution to take a look at the price and make sure it is within their company's budget.

Overall, I would rate the product nine out of ten. I've been quite happy with it.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Public Cloud

It allows users to join multiple source files and create visualizations using fields from each of them.

What is most valuable?

Tableau Desktop is equipped with so many valuable features that it is difficult to know where to begin. The functionality that allows users to join multiple source files and create visualizations using the fields from each of the joined source files is certainly nice to have. While the list of graphs and charts on the “Show Me” menu is impressive, one can do so much more with Tableau. With a little imagination and ingenuity, customized visualizations can be created easily and quickly.

How has it helped my organization?

It is far easier for my audience to grasp the key takeaways of an analysis by viewing a data visualization than by reviewing a spreadsheet. Tableau Desktop simplifies communication between analytics and senior executives.

What needs improvement?

I have not yet transitioned to Tableau Desktop 10.0, but I understand version 10.0 has functionality that allow users to perform cluster analysis. I am sure that I will be using this functionality frequently going forward.

For how long have I used the solution?

I was introduced to Tableau as part of an online course on data visualization offered by the University of California, Irvine. Although I have been using Tableau for less than a year, I use the product frequently.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

I have not encountered any deployment, stability or scalability issues.

How are customer service and technical support?

Tableau provides an enormous number of online resources that are clear, concise, and very thorough. You are almost guaranteed to find the answers you are seeking within this online documentation.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We did evaluate a number of other BI solutions before selecting Tableau Desktop. In the end, we chose Tableau Desktop because of its flexibility and superior graphics. We are a fairly small organization. While we do not currently have a data warehouse, we are planning to build a BIDW within the next three years. Once the data warehouse has been rolled out, we will transition from Tableau Desktop to Tableau Server. In the era of big data, Tableau Server offers a number of attractive features including the built-in interface with both the R Project and various open source big data applications.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup for Tableau Desktop is about as straightforward as possible. Once you download the software to your computer, you are ready to use the application.
